I had a vision/dream to get U2 to record a version of "It's a Grand Old Flag" or a message and for it to played on the big screen on April 22 at the G.Does anyone have any influence to get this to happen ? Our club has connections Garry Lyon - Molly Meldrum, may be Russell Howcroft has a contact, Derryn Hinch?, Neil Mitchell? It may be a long shot, but it would be the best Irish/MFC tribute possible.

If anyone has ideas on how to progress this dream please let me know. We could go viral with this to get it happening?

My other thought is to be directed to MFC, the yellow premiership stars on our jumpers could be changed to Irish Green, so we will always have Jim on our backs.

Perhaps a Band Aid type of arrangement producing a CD with proceeds to Reach (and video performance of each version).. U2, Van Morrison, Chieftains, Elvis Costello, Pogues, Planxty, Luca Blume, Corrs (if you must) and Sinead O'Connor.

Have to add Christy Moore and the Frames to that list hardtack, maybe in replacement for the Corrs :)

I am guessing your best bet would be to go through their management at:

All great ideas. Really love the green stars. Even more so I hope they wear the Irish training guernsey for the match. Id love to see 22 boys in the green for the night.

Excellent idea 'DL7' . And entirely appropriate . Even better if our club kept it quiet . Just imagine the team (all in green) running through the banner on Saturday arvo and the crowd reaction !

My take on possibly wearing the Irish training guernsey is more a mark of respect for Jimmy .

I hope U2 never touch our wonderful song, they would massacre it.

The pogues on the other hand!

Agree with those sentiments, and think the Pogues would do a particularly suitable version as long as Shane MacGowan was singing. If the OP is serious about the idea, it might be an appropriate time to chase this up with the MFC, as I am pretty certain the Pogues are in Australia for the Byron Bay Blues Music Festival over Easter.

Edit: (I have just tweeted Cam Schwab, suggesting he look at this thread)

Please, please, please, NOT the green jumper. I can't imagine anything more respectful than wearing the red and blue he played all his games in. In fact, I would support a red and blue jumper in the exact shades of colour and style worn by Jim.

The Pogues are indeed out here at the moment and i agree, they would do a much much better version of the Grand Old Flag. Would love to see this happen. Stuff U2, Bono would make it all about himself. Can't stand the bloke! Would be great to get the Pogues to perform at that Rd4 game. A little bit like the Boston Redsox who get the Dropkick Murphy's to play live at games. See:

Yes, since I mentioned the fact they are here, I have been hearing them singing it in my head (make the voices go away!) and I am now convinced that there is no-one else on the planet that could do the GOF the kind of justice the Pogues would do it... imagine Shane MacGowan swaggering and staggering his way through that with that voice of his... perfect!! And the fact that they are in the country, if they have no other commitments, perhaps they could be convinced to stick around for a live performance.

Green stars or the the four leaf clover on the back of the jumper would look terrific I think

I just want them to take to the field with either the number 11 or 37 embroidered on their jumpers over their hearts - in fact I want them to wear that in every single match they play for the rest of the year.

Perhaps this thread help enable the Edge to be on the screen yesterday? That was great.

Next Irish Green stars on the back of jumpers for the future.

The Edge is such an interesting person, the only human known to man that was born with a beanie on his head.

Maybe he's Molly's love child? (at least I almost got my wish of them wearing the number 11 over their hearts - on a clover instead over the sternum :-) )

How about nothing? The next time we should mention Jim Stynes from an on-field perspective is after we hoist the Premiership cup.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
