Does anyone recall how long Travis Varcoe took to show something?

How many games he seemed to be gifted at Geelong whilst they were at the top?

And then one day after about 6 years it clicked, and he is a very valuable player for them.

Sometimes you have to wait that long.

Will the result be worth the wait?

That's the call you have to make.

Play him in the forward line at Casey for the next 8 to 10 matches. If he becomes a regular crumbing goal kicker and shows something amazing..... maybe he gets a look in towards the end of this season to see what he has, if anything. If he doesn't....it's trade/delist time IMO.

Has shown nothing anywhere else on the ground until now and this is the only area i can see that he just might offer us something. Would have to harden up 10 fold though and learn how to chase down and tackle. Soft as butter at this point (not alone) and this club is already severely short of warriors who yearn for hard nosed never- say-die footy.

Spot on RN IMO he is a small forward or nothing.

Not sure why the FD want to play him in the backline.

Rioli had a quiet game yesterday, bar a few flashes of brilliance.

I really think in a much better side, Bennell would receive the opportunities to show a lot more.

I'm not an advocate of keeping him indefinitely, but I would wait until the end of the year before even contemplating that he may be delisted, and likely keep him for 2013.

He's probably contracted for then anyway, if you care to look it up.

Another case of a player who showed glimpses early on, but for whatever reason has shown absolutely no improvement, and has in reality probably gone backwards. Looking at his stats over the last 3 years since he was drafted his statistics have continually dropped off each year i.e. disposals, marks etc. That just shouldn't be allowed to happen, and I bet if you dug a little further he wouldn't be the only one who has shown a bit of promise early and then just dropped off year after year.

Back in 2010 Jamie got Mark and Goal of the year nominations and I also remembering getting 4 goals as a small forward against Port Adelaide.

I would love to see this guy play as a small crumbing forward this year, I think he would be dangerous.

Really, who cares if a player takes mark of the year and kicks a freakish goal once in a blue moon?

We need players who can grind out good games 22 times a year and lift under bang-crash finals type footy.

Bennell was bad recruiting.

I disagree. Played some promising games early where he showed he was a one-touch player, had speed, and had good disposal. Since then, he has gone backwards which can't be blamed on Prendergast. If West Coast had of selected him as they intended with their next pick I am sure he would be 10 times the player he is today.

You're right about one thing ... he's a one-touch player. Two or three on a good day.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
