Apparently you didn't realise it was in jest!

I'm pretty sure you were offering Priddis? Maybe I had Mayne, regardless it'll go nowhere. Either way, I don't like Priddis' hair.

Tapscott?

I am offering up man-of-the-moment Liam Jurrah for anyone willing to take a gamble on him having a barnstorming 40-goal second half to the season. He'll be back with a point to prove. Could be the difference to your side making the eight or not.

Think about it and make me an offer. Looking to upgrade one of my backs or mids.

You have an offer on the table from your round 1 opponent. J Tynan for L Tapscott. Depth for depth - Tynan will play earlier yet Tappy may be better long term this season

Keeper League

Touched on earlier by OMR and it is something I am keen to implement. This year, unless the idea receives an overly negative response, will be the beggining of our keeper league.

Basically it means that come next year you will keep 4 players from this year's list. These players will be selected before the draft which will then be made up of players not already kept in a team. Which adds an interesting dynamic to the upcoming draft because some of the players you pick may be 'your' players for several years to come.

I had thought originally to keep players from last year for this year but ultimately I feel that disadvantages some teams who might have weaker teams so it is best to start from a clean slate.

Why 4? It has to be an even number because of the draft system. The risk with more, say 6, is that if a team lucks out and gets 6 high quality players it may be years of them being very good which reduces the incentive for the others to continue on. 2 Just doesn't feel like enough.

The 1st game in anger all but a mere few hours away, :)

This might be a good option to consider for next year a PRE DRAFT : after all the coaches have chosen their "keeper" players and discarded the rest the bottom six teams have a free hit (draft) on the 'pool' of elite players cut from everyones team. Each get to choose 1 elite player. The bottom 6 teams only,so there isnt any tanking, the last 6 would be random. All done proir to the main draft, when they have all added their ONE elite player

then we open up the main draft as per normal. So if you had a crap year, for whatever reason, you have something to offset it, a slight jump on the rest. Btw doesnt have to be the bottom 6, could be the bottom 4 teams that get the free 'hit".Effectively the bottom 6 teams would have 5 'keepers"

And IF I dont finish bottom 6, (and have no intention of doing so) , plz ignore this suggestion lol

Food for some thought?.

While that makes sense, the regular way of doing thing... ie the reverse order of the ladder at year's end... would, you'd think, be enough to ensure the bad performers from one year get first crack the following year. Unless I'm wrong, your suggestion works something like this.... The lowest ranked teams from 2012 will get picks 1-6... and THEN get picks 7-12 on top of that. I reckon that mightbe a little too much advantage there. Not to mention the fact that during the season, once you KNOW you're not going to make it to finals, or if you know you're too injury decimated to stay in it long, you might trade some of your short-term quality (Sandilands, Cox, Hayes etc) for some long-term prospects (Le Cras etc). To me, using crafty trading in 2012, along with 2 picks inside the first 12... that's going to be too much.

UNless I read your post wrong. Did I?

I personally like the concept, I have some ideas in mind, including something similar to this. We'll see how the year pans out first.

Or....or.....the bottom four get mid table compo picks, and you slot these in under either the current format or reverse ladder positions.

I was hoping to play Carrazzo too however the league page suggests we can't.

  • You have until Saturday March 24 at 7:20 PM (AEDT) to sign and delist players for your Round 1 team.
  • Team to team trades must be accpeted and processed by Saturday March 24 at 7:20 PM (AEDT) for these players to be available for your Round 1 team.

This seems odd as the trade will be complete on the Thursday

You read it correctly. But before 'we' start punching holes in the concept, it needs to be discussed and thoroughly thought through.

The 1st question to be asked is... is is a good idea to give the bottom 2-6 teams more hope for the next season, I thought it was, thats why I wanted to get the ball rolling. Until this season is nearing an end, we wont know how far off the pace the 12th placed team is, maybe they dont need much help, Might be just the bottom 2 teams that we help more.

Maybe the keeper min could be 6 for each coach. Either way, I thought with the draft now setup the way it is, its so everyone gets to taste some finals, If the same ones finish down at the wrong end most times, they will lose interest.

If whatever is decided ie last 4 teams, get a pre-draft, then they are last pick in the 1st round. So then it works they get 2 1st round picks,at some stage they will have to forfeit a round pick, because they have 1 more player than anyone else.

Therefore, they could be ommitted from the 2nd round draft. That in effect, gives them an extra gun player, but they miss out of a medium player, if you follow?

Whatever way it works, its to keep everyone interested in playing, Some may drop out for other reasons, but its hard to keep going when down at the wrong end of the ladder.

It can work, just needs to be worked through, and decided what would work best.

We have all year to come up with a concept that is suitable.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
