Smokies in this draft or Rookie picks - my pick Lin Jong (from 2011)

Will be interested to see how he goes. If he steps up into the first 22 it'd be a selling point for any games in China.

Could mean we're up against the Bulldogs next time we head over.

Let's hope he hasn't got fear of flying.

If so, maybe the AFL will switch back to Qantas to help him.

The guy was raised in Australia to parents from Taiwan and Eastern Timor... how does that make him a selling point for games in China? Simply because he is of Asian appearance? Hmmmm.

If someone raised in China by parents who were from New Zealand and Sweden was recruited to play major league ping pong or badminton in China (among their most popular sports), would that suddenly mean a surge in interest in ping pong or badminton here in Australia simply because NZ is part of Australasia and because he is of Western appearance?

Maybe if the NZ-Swedish Badminton player is attractive...

Pretty strange attack. He's from Taiwan, he has a Chinese name and yes he's of Chinese appearance so even if this sounds odd to you, this is what makes him a selling point in China.

Using the NZ/Swedish link shows you're looking at it how we would look at it, which is different to how the Chinese do. Here it's about the culture you grew up in, so if he grew up in Australia, sounds Australian, then yeh, he's Australian. But in China it's about race, you ask any taxi driver if a Chinese person moves to the US and has children there, those children will still be Chinese, so will their children's children. And as RobbieF has mentioned already, Taiwan is very much a part of China in the minds of the average Chinese population.

It's like when the Chinese used to say that non-Asian people would never be able to speak Chinese fluently because of how we're genetically made up, they thought only Asians would be able to speak it. Then people like ol mate Da Shan came along and shat all over what the rest of would consider a ridiculous theory. In this case, if Lin Jong can play well and be successful at AFL level then it presents an opportunity for them to support someone they can relate to and also show them that if they put in the work, they could have a chance at playing AFL in Australia as well.

As someone who has lived in china over several years this frankly is a ridiculous argument. The Chinese do not distinguish between Chinese of other nationalities and those born within the borders ( hence Australian Chinese business people of Australian citizenship are not protected by Australian or international law. To the Chinese, they all come under the rather dodgy Chinese legal system. How many European Australian business people have got into trouble in china over the last 10 years - none)

As far as football is concerned, as long as the person playing AFL was ethnically Chinese then he would be regarded as one of them, and therefore immensely valuable as a front for AFL in China, particularly if he can also speak mandarin.

As I said to faceplant above, point taken.

seems strange that a thread regarding potential rookie picks is still going nearly a week after the draft has occured...perhaps a "potentially politically incorrect statments" thread would be more appropriate especially since we seem to have done so well with the rookies we got

I'd like to point out I did in fact find a few posts in this thread offensive.

And while I do appreciate that it was all in good fun....a post stating:

I hear they're good laterally... Good vision... LoL.

Isn't really cricket to me. And seeing as though the "code of conduct" clearly states:

Avoid Racial, Political or Religious discussions. This forum is about the Melbourne Football Club, not about the parties, race or religious affiliation of players, staff and/or fans.

I just thought I'd point it out.

If there's two things I can't stand, it's racists and the dutch!

Bahahaha! Gold..almost lost my cuppa Tea reading that one!!

Looks like he didn't get better after all.

Condolences to his hairdresser and family.

Yes Kim Jong is an ex Parrott. Gone to meet the choir invisible.

Must watch "Team America" tonight in his honour.

Looks like he didn't get better after all.

Condolences to his hairdresser and family.

The big question as the world watches with trepidation at the events as they happen in North Korea is who is going to inherit this man's legendary porn collection.

My smokie in this draft is this fella. Has come from nowhere this year to play in the TAC Grand final.

He lacked confidence in his early years but has really come on, being consistently one of their best overall. At188 cms tall, has played in many positions even played finals in the ruck.

I await other thoughts on him and others to be smokies to be considered here or in the rookie list

lol.

jcb at the time had a massive thing for first generation Australian players.  Daw, Temel, Jong.  Years later, you can bump one of the threads and it makes him look like a visionary.

I remember at the time reading this thread, laughing, thinking "here we go again".  I suppose he was bound to get one right eventually.

Hi Nasher, 3,out of 4/.aint to bad. After picking Jong I came up with Alir Alir, thereforec3 out of 4 as stated ain't bad ....better than most at Demonland...only failure  was Temel and that was because he was so so lazy.

Don't forget JB, you also wanted Talia in 2009 with pick 11, instead we drafted Gysberts. You would've been right again.

Was Ma Jong a good athlete or a better entertainer?

She used to play Ping Pong, but not in the traditional way.

Another chapter in the book of MFC draft stuff ups circa 2007 - 2012

Gysberts and Blease would go down in history as the two worst players to get nominated twice as a rising star.

Everytime I think about how important  and revered the NAB rising star award is, I then remind myself that these 2 so called "STARS" didn't get nominated just once but TWICE.

The whole Chinese thing is silly.  Sponsorship, selling games etc etc.  I have eluded to this before somewhere on Demonland, and in sit downs with mates.  But I'm gonna say it again.  There is no sustainable market outside this country we live in for Aussie Rules Football.  Nowhere.  Why?  Because they (foreign markets) dont get it, never have and never will.  They don't want to watch it and are completely not emotionally invested in it.  It really is that simple.  Aussie rules football developing a chinese or american market for example, makes me chuckle.

Looking back on it, that draft was absolutely brutal in regard to MFC selections. Quite possibly the worst ever...

National Draft
Pick 36: Rory Taggert
Pick 52: Josh Tynan
Pick 54: James Sellar

Rookie Draft
Pick 6: Jai Sheahan
Pick 24: Tom Couch
Pick 42: James Magner
Pick 59: Leigh Williams

Magner was serviceable for a pick 42 rookie draft.

But yeah, overall pretty bad.

I think Daniel Talia was mine, if I remember correctly, JCB?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

The Dogs reigned supreme in 2018 with an inaugural AFLW premiership cup and the Demons matched this feat by winning the cup as the Season 7 2022 champions.Meggs wasn’t born when the Doggies won their first VFL premiership cup against the Demons in 1954. Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

Ten seasons. Eighteen teams. With the young talent pathway finally fully connected, Women’s Australian Rules football is building momentum and Season 2025 promises to be the best yet. In advance of Season 10, the AFL leadership has engaged in candid discussions with all clubs regarding strategies to boost attendance and expand fan bases. Concerningly, average attendances in 2024 were 2,660 fans per match, with the women’s game incurring an annual loss of approximately $50 million.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
