Tom Scully wants to be Giant for life!

Featured Replies

Very good post .

Wills and Harrison were about 22 and 21 respectively when Aussie Rules first kicked off in 1858 .

Reckon a lot of people associate these 2 with being a lot older ( at the time )

Just a couple of young blokes with an idea . .

The Zuckerberg and Saverin of 1858. Personally, I think the social networking value of football is better than Facebook.

Yes Mr. Whispering please send the above information to both the AFL & GW$ as I am really tired of all the lies that this new franchise is being built on, and this is before their first bounce.

What will Greg Denham say when he finds out about all these GWS lies?

Blame the Melbourne culture for corrupting Scully, while simultaneously praising him for getting the Hell out of here while he still could.

They cut the video short - Almost positive he was about to say "lie big"

I threw up a little watching that.

Nothin' another Cooper's won't fix !

The Scully family from Neigbours were better actors.

Move on people.

Mitch Clark joined Melbourne for big bucks too.

But Mitch Clark wasn't a 20 year old no. 1 draft pick whose club did everything it could to protect him from the media and manage his knee while he made his decision.

I don't recall Clark publicly pledging his undying loyalty, his love of the club and burning desire to be a one club man only 6 or so months ago.

Everyone is being a little bit precious.

Well said Clint. Too much hand wringing. He is gone. Move on.

I think it's fair to say that we should all move on (and moat of us are doing just that) but it's also ridiculous to suggest that we mustn't comment about or expose the rank hypocrisy and lies coming from the GWS and Scully circus ATM.

I attended the GWS annual corporate lunch about a month or so ago. I have to say, I was pretty impressed. There were about 850 people there, and it was really well organised. The stadium and the facilities look good, and their membership base appears to be tracking well.

Everyone was giving me carp about GWS landing Scully, to which I said to all - you can have him - I just wish the MFC didn't waste our number one pick on him. Left a bad taste though.

Amongst other things, Sheedy spoke to the audience about the club's recruiting. Tongue in cheek, he kept saying the recruiters did a great job and they didn't really let him know who they'd recruited. It was 100% clear that the Scully deal was sewn up a very long time before he 'officially' signed the contract. What really p1ssed me off was how smug they were about it all.

As an aside, I was in NYC last week and had several beers with Andrew Mackie (Geelong player). Good bloke.

He said that, in his opinion, it was not such a bad result for the MFC in losing Scully, as the Dees would've had to have paid stupid money to keep him and that would've stuffed up our list management completely. He seemed to suggest that a lot of players were offered ridiculous money to go to GWS (as you'd expect), but he didn't think it would be good form to take the dough, leave your team mates and your club. A future leader of the club wouldn't do that - unsurprisingly, he really rated Jack Trengove.

He also said that Mitch Clark is the one of the hardest players to match up against - hates playing on him. Rated him very highly, but said he's still a bit inconsistent. In short, reckons he was a top get for the club and that his best years are still ahead of him.

Also said that he's close to Ken Hinkley, and the feeling amongst the coaches was that of all the clubs looking for a new coach this year, the MFC was the club to land. It has a young talented list with an enormous upside that hasn't been realised yet. Thought there was a big leadership vacuum at the club though - but, given the relative youth of the list, it's a very malleable list that can be moulded really well. Reckons Neeld will be a really good coach, and we could see a very different team in the next few years. Need to change the club culture, and he should be able to influence that.

All pretty obvious stuff I suppose, but thought some of you may be interested nonetheless.

Intersting summation Ron. Thanks for all that.

November 2011: "I know my future's here and I anticipate I'll be here for the rest of my career."

March 2011: ''I'd love to end my career and say I was a one-club player, and anticipate that will be the case"

Pure drivel from a money-hungry cripple with a bad haircut. I was foolish enough to take him on his March press conference for much of the year too, as were several key figures at MFC.

Anyway he's their problem now. Good player but its money down the toilet.

I'm glad Scully was taken at No. 1.

All Sheedy and GWS wanted was to be able to say they had snared a No. 1 draft pick. If the MFC coin toss had gone the other way, they would have been after Jack Trengove who, in my opinion has been much better value than Scully.

That said, I don't think Trengove would have been as mercenary as Scully if the dollars had been thrown his way by GWS.

good for him the traitor

I could do that WYL but suspect that I wouldn't get far.

People like Demetriou, Anderson & co are the money men of football and while I accept that financial strength is important for the sport to continue, I doubt whether they're particularly interested in the game's history and in preserving the richness of the game's heritage.

All they're interested in is the money and marketing and if the game in western Sydney can be promoted with the odd ... er, exaggeration of the facts, then so be it - the bums on the seats are what seems to matter the most.

And if they tread on a few toes and upset existing clubs, then what the heck!

You are correct my friend, but we should NEVER FORGET.

Thanks Ron

really well balanced summation

Intersting thought about changing the culture

It may be easy to say now but - a new broom may sweep clean in a way the old broom did not

( let's hope)

and although this was not my attitude before the leadership change -

the fact it happened when it did gave us the luxury of considerable time to plan

a final thought : we have creative players who maybe lacked the battleship forward to work off

Methinks we can have confidence in the powes that be

by the way

has anyone read the OPI report on corruption in high places on

tinyurl.com/3maxisb ?

He will be a two club player because his career will be over before his contract is but if his knees do hold up he will be back in Victoria as quick as a flash, probably playing for Richmond from the age of 27

Great read Ron. Mackie's views on us are very interesting and noteworthy coming from such a quality player. Probably slips under the guard with all of the other stars at Geelong but he sits comfortably as a champion alongside all of them.

GW$' culture of smugness and fib-telling will eventually come back to bite them on the bum.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
