Patrick Smith was on the money around two months ago. Collingwood got ahead of themselves and started drinking their own bathwater.

And this was all before the bewildering, selfish Malthouse appearance on the Footy Show which destabilized the club heading into the finals.

Don't think for a moment Chris Scott's repeated use of the word 'humility' was not well chosen.

When it comes time for our turn in the sun, we Demons need to take note of what happened here.

The Pies really got their collective heads up in the non- solar zone.........talk of a triple or more dynasty.

Sure they had a good H&A season, but they could well have gone out in straight sets had the cards fallen just a little differently weeks 1 & 3.

Geelong were mentally tougher for longer.

Collingwood lost because:

• their best assistant coach left on the eve of the finals, this would have been really destabilising
  
• Jolly was even more of a dinosaur than normal (although he had a lot of hit outs, absolutely no influence around the ground)
  
• Ben Reid obviously wasn't right, because he couldn't run in the second half and Hawkins towelled him
  
• Geelong's pressure was intense
  
• Mick Malthouse's last game was a huge distraction
  
• AND they believed their own hype
  

Geelong were harder at it for longer and were just classier.

I could prob think of a few more reasons but that's enough for now.

The Filth lost cos they were carp.....and the usual wobbles came in.....last year they were lucky they came against a team even worse then them...in the Saints.

but it is so good to see them lose......the only thing sweeter would be watching us beat the Scum.

To his credit Patrick Smith did point to Collingwood's hubris in midseason when they were flying as a factor that might bring them down but it really wasn't that at all. In reality, it was because they came across a better team on the day and because injuries caught up with them after a dream run that stretched over several years.

Throughout the year, Collingwood was pretty well dominant as demonstrated by a percentage that hovered around 180 until that round 24 smashing in a dead rubber by Geelong. Despite that loss, I was convinced the Pies would triumph because of the strength of their press, their midfield and their talls up forward and the coolness of their defence ... and then along came Geelong which I hope will become an inspiration for Melbourne as it strives to recover from the shattering disappointments and frustration of this season.

The Cats' campaign in 2010 was effectively derailed by issues with it's coach and the distractions over whether Gary Ablett Junior would go to GCS. They also overcame the retirement of long time president Frank Costa. They came back brilliantly in 2011 with a new coaching direction, with players stepping up to cover the breach left by the departure of their best player. They countered Collingwood's game in the grand final and even came back from three goals down in the second quarter to win by 38 points. Collingwood didn't lose it - the Cats won fair and square.

The challenges Melbourne faces next year are different to those that faced the Cats but there are similarities in that we go into next season with a new coaching structure and the ugliness of the Scully saga now behind us. We also have plenty to prove to the world and I hope we can achieve our aims with the same professionalism and purpose that Geelong demonstrated this year. They fully deserve this premiership.

The cats won the first touches then lost the ball constantly. Pies rebounded but couldn't score enough.

Excellent defence Cats, and never let up.

The sun is shining. The world just seems a nicer happier place now that Collingwood are not the reigning premiers.

Never ever even contemplate playing injured players in a GF. Jolly and Reid were not up to it on the day.

And Geelong had self belief, but belief that they kept to themselves and didn't flaunt in public. They were harder longer.

The Filth had the niggling instability of Buckley v Malthouse simmering along in the background,

....and, we helped destabilise them further by pinching their midfield coach!

Collingwood arrogance is astounding .

Eddie has come out and said no announcements will be made about Collingwood coaching positions etc for the next few days to allow the cats to have their few days in the sun .

That is not an error in a GF, it's Pressure....Different dynamic.

One regret in it all, no camera on Joffa at the end, would have put the icing on the cake(walk).

Yeah would have loved a camera on joffa. But the camera on eddie mcchins was priceless. About 20 of us watching at a mates and all went up as one cheering when that happened....pure gold.

It also helped that Geelong had inside knowledge on Malthouse and Collingwoods structures (particularly their midfield).

Agree. In fact I think we would have seen a closer result if the Hawks had have played.

Pies were so lucky to get over the line in the prelim.

Quite simple; they just ran out of steam. I think too much oxygen in the air. The high hills of Arizona won't get many AFL visitors next year.

Oh and plus they wobbled again, Their curse is as bad as the curse of Norm Smith. Makes you wonder about validity of bone pointing.
