Brad Green's status?

Roos can't lose

At the time Cale and Stef re signed it was reported that Brad Green signing was imminent .

Two weeks and one new coach later still no word.

A good question. Probably still in negotiations at this stage. Neeld will surely have a say in the list too, so it might be a case of negotiating a contract with Green that he is happy with, but also recognises that his time is almost up as a MFC player.

Hope he doesn't go the way of Bruce or McDonald. He isn't a great leader, and he didn't have a great season, but he has been a good servant to the club and I hope he goes out on mutually agreed terms and with a solid season. He was AA last year too, so worth persevering with.

I hope he re-signs. As much as I was disappointed in him on field this year, I hope he continues - but they'll have to address the 2011 leadership.

Posted

I think he still has alot to offer and I'm sure he would be the first one to admit he is not captain material but don't see any problem with 1 year contracts from here on in

Posted

Maybe the news will be saved till the b+f .

I feel he still has more to offer as a player and may thrive again possibly without the captaincy which he did not seem to adapt to

I actually think that Green does provide experience and leadership. Look at last year - turning games of his own boot, leading by example, and plenty of chat to the youngsters on the field.

He has had a poor year and has not taken the required step from being a leader to THE leader. ie the captain. In fact in the leadership department he has gone backwards this year.

When we looked at leaders at the end of last year we looked at Davey ? Rivers ? Moloney ? Grimes ? and Green. With the exception of Moloney, Green was probably the standout.

I dont think we should re-write history. There was a reason most of us here thought he would be a good captain - it was based on his 2010 season and his steady progression to a harder footballer, with an ability to do "lead by example" acts on the footy field.

I would remove the captaincy from him but definately leave him in the leadership group. It would not surprise me if they gave him a second year as Captain based on this year being an abberation.

I will ask people to wind back a year and see if they foresaw Brad having such a horrible year as Captain - I certainly didnt

Neither did I nutbean - as captain. But I thought he would have an important job and tough introduction as captain in front of him with the exodus of Junior, Bruce and to a ever so small component in Miller last year.

I agree Samsara. I think he's got this coming year and maybe 2013, then it's all she wrote.

On that basis, surely you would agree the talk of "moving him on" by some on here is a bit knee jerk.

In fact I would be as dirty on the likes of Rivers and Davey as they gave nothing.to help Green,

In fact I am most livid at Rivers - as I have witnessed his leadership skills first hand. There is link somewhere on this board with Wayne Carey chatting with Rivers. Carey was making statements about us being a rabble, coachless and losing Scully and instead of making of a strong statement on behalf of the club he went insipid and folded like a bad poker hand.

How about saying "the problems reported during the year were media beat up of the highest order, As greeny said - all clubs have differences of opinion and they are worked through - you Wayne should know that as well as any one from your years at North. Whilst we dont like losing our coach, you dont release a coach to end up with a worse coach - we will get the best possible coach available have no doubt about that. And Tom Scully left for greener pastures. - so be it - we will be compensated and have super talent on our list that will continue to develop. Players come and players go that will never change. We are about a list of 40 not one single player" - Jonno Brown would have steamrolled Wayne Carey.

Now THATS how a leader responds ( sorry about the highjack but if you want to vomit have a look at the Carey/Rivers clip)

Green is on the veterans list and as such it only taking up an extra rookie spot.

I see no reason why we wouldn't contract him for at least another 2 years.

Finally someone tha tagrees with me about Rivers' (lack of) leadership. he is the first one booted out of the LG.

In regards to the OP, I have no idea what his status is, but I'm about 1 of 1 people on this site that wants to see Brad given a 2 year contract, and to remain captain for season 2012.

I did see that yesterday. I was disappointed and you make a good point. At least stick up for your club, no matter how intimidating someone might be sitting next to you. Don't fold like a deck of cards.

Yep. Disappointed, thought he was better than that.

Rivers done the nervous Green laugh.

BTW, the Green rumour on the rumour thread was a fake. Some silly biatch thought she could get a laugh out of it. Said biatch now has a bad conscience over that.

Sorry lads. I got a laugh over it if it's any consolation...

lol...some have thought that Rivers wasnt a leader for some time

Id have no issue with Brad geting a 2 year deal, probably his last. He has some leadership abilities but has for whatever reason found the captaincy to be an albatross.

Unshackled he might breathe a bit more life into his career. Hes fit and ought to play some good footy yet.

Will be interesting to see what role Neeld has in store for him

Here we go....

Your issue was and is his playing ability on field, not primarily leadership, so don't try and re-write history. I haven't had an issue with him down back, you have. Hence why you wanted him traded/delisted 3 years ago.

I think club policy permits 1 year contracts for players over 30.

excuse me.. Ive never rated Rivers as any sort of leader. AND ive had issues with his playing. At best hes 'adequate'

So its yourself my friend who would want to rewrite things...or make them up...whichever.

Id say theres a distinct preference for 1 yr.. policy ? that in itself is a variable from season to season, or regime to regime. and that just changed.

Most likely a wait and see in these matters now.

Well, whenever we have discussed Rivers, it's 'primarily' (never said you never mentioned leadership) been about his playing ability IIRC.

Fwiw, he has shown a great deal more on field this year, consistently in leading by example through good play, than other members of the LG.

I'll drop this..apologies from deviating from the thread/

I dont believe he will have another year in the doldrums like this year.

He should get a 2 year deal and until otherwise advised he is the captain of the team I love.

As a supporter (a concept which involves the task of supporting our team and players) I am prepared to give it 120%.

Is anyone else prepared to give him a chance?

Posted

Nice hit and run HT...you ought to be in politics

Yes, when Rivers is often discussed Ive not had much praise for him ( as not much was warranted in my view) . Would you however concede that even Ive mentioned him in dispatches when hes had a good day. I stil dont for the life of me understand his high regard held by many here. hes very average, and getting slower.

as you suggest back to the topic proper.

Green ought to be offered a 1 x 1 deal. a defacto 2 of sorts . All the regular conditions ought to be set as criteria and the club should have final sway as to the relevance of those conditions. Green has served the club well ( in the main ) and possibly we should have learnt tfrom recent times that there are better ways of going about some things, to everyones satisfaction.

Unfortunately for Brad I dont think he'l be there on that day we claim the Silverware, not unless our improvement is seriously expedited but he ought to know that he wil lhave helped considerably in its achievement.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

I think Kolt looks like he’s im

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
