I know I've been interviewed for a job I didn't want (and got offered it, too, although I subsequently refused) because it was politically expedient to go through the process.

Yes, he may want to be the next coach. But the article doesn't actually say that.

Can't have him as coach especially when his own son is going to be playing for the club soon.

I dont think there would be any 12 month arrangement with Mick taking over after that, because if Viney is successful and well liked we would be silly to lose him, and he would probably want to stay.

Exactly, we'd basically be setting ourselves up for the same dilemma Collingwood face. However, it may be that Viney himself has an issue with coaching his son and wouldn't be interested in extending his tenure, regardless of success. If that is the case, he'd be the perfect candidate for the scenario.

I interpreted Supermercado's comment differently. I thought he was implying that if Todd doesn't get the job, he may leave, and therefore we may lose Jack as well.

The last two caretaker coaches for Melbourne (Hutchison and Riley) both left after unsuccesfully applying for the job.

True, he stopped short of saying exactly those words. Whether that was his intention or not, he has signalled that he's keen for the job which is vastly contrary to his past talk of not being interested.

Mick Malthouse has also stated that he will not coach next year either but a great bunch of posters on here think otherwise..

There are plenty of good reasons for Mick to tow the "not coaching anywhere next year" line. It's basically the most effective way of him saying "no comment" to the media.

NO WAY, I would be shattered. I like Todd but not as senior coach, assistant yes but would rather someone like Neeld. Viney as his 2nd in charge

Todd Viney's pedigree is the equal of Mark Neeld's, or Brenton Sanderson's, and arguably better, given that his playing career was stellar. Don't forget he was assistant to Alistair Clarkson for the 2008 flag, and up until this year, has been following the senior coach pathway beautifully. I'm inclined to think he came back to the Dees for exactly this scenario, and in fact I'm still surprised he didn't put his hand up for the gig after the Rev finished, but I guess he wanted a bit more apprenticeship.

These last 4 weeks are in no way a reflection of what he could bring next year. The playing group were a shambles after the Geelong/Bailey week, and not even Norm Smith could have turned that around.

If he really wants the gig, I'd give it to him in a heartbeat.

I am swaying towards Ross Lyon or Mick Malthouse, but if we can't get one of them then I wouldn't mind Todd. I have liked a few of the smaller things I have witnessed over the last few weeks. Todd doesn't seem to be one to just say what seems the correct thing to say, calls a spade a spade and reputations ount for nothing. Small evidence of more man on man, defensive and accountable footy.

Lets face it Viney would come a lot cheaper than Malthouse or Lyon but if this is the case the club should spend the same they intended on the other two using the extra money to surround Viney with experienced assistants, Laidley, Watters, Sanderson and also spend on football department

No from me. I want non-Melbourne people running our footy department, because 'Melbourne people' have proven useless for nearly 50 years now! Todd ain't exactly a new broom, is he?

And i dont think we have had a problem with a having boys club; if you were to even look at the past 15 years we've only hired coaches from the Essendon Football Club.

Since Jimmy has come back it has been a clear decision to make everyone around the club as Melbourne as possible.

Todd has performed incredibly well whilst not having the coaching role in his sight. Straight talking, wont take mediocrity, and loves the players and club.

He was instrumental in a Hathorn Flag

And they loved him at the crows

We could do ALOT worse

Todd may be a great coach, but to be honest, his record of three terrible losses and a modest victory against a team of teenagers is not the sort of resume which fills me with confidence.

Lets face it though he has been rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic over the past few weeks.

I'd give him job for next year as caretaker, change the assistants around and see how he goes. If the group shows improvement then he'll have every right to go on and if not we will be then looking at a Lyon out of contract or a Maltouse coming from a year off!

If Malthouse wants to coach it has to be next year otherwise we look else where such as Lyon, Williams, Roos or Bomber.

We can not be in a holding pattern for another year. (we have basically been in a holding pattern for the past 4 years its time to move forward now not in 12 months)

Agree. I think Todd is the man. His honesty and way of simplifying what is required has impressed me no end. Malthouse has achieved great things but keep in mind he has probably had the two best resourced football departments in each stint at WC and Collingwood. How would he go with lesser resources and structures around him? Todd is hard, tough, honest and from what we have seen and heard, someone with a good footy brain.

Malthouse won't be coaching anywhere next year nor will Lyon excpet for StKilda. He has unfinished business next and will see out the last year of his contract with a team that will go close this year and will be buoyed by the return of Lenny Hayes next year.

You may be right.

But I am happy with delaying the decision, and I am happy for our club to look reactive in the end due to our proactive behaviour in trying to get a proven coach.
