Tom Scully in September ...

Grandson of a gun

Recommended Posts

We are a rabble, but I can't wait to see who Mr Sully blames for his departure. I hope he is at least honest and says it was for the money.

Now I'm suss about him leaving China early last year. Was he talking with GWS?

Did he lie to Jimmy's face?

The kid has balls... uber professionalism... hard nosed snake in the grass. Dog eat dog attitude. Keep your childeren away from him he will bite their heads off probably.

Did the china trip fall in the window GWS had last year to approach players?

You are right Sue. But I hope we also have the courage to look inwardly at our own house and ask some long hard questions about what occurred here. A head or two might have to roll because of it.

To be blindsided like this shows a lack of foresight at the very least.

Could we have kept him? Did we too meekly accept the AFL rules on compo as WJ says above?

The questions will always be asked. Richmond kept their boy. We couldn't.

It's embarrassing whichever way you slice it and yet another black day in the club's post 50's/60's history.

You are passing your theories off as if they are fact. If Tom goes, he goes. If Tom stays, he stays. But from reading your posts, I'm pretty certain you're not privy to any personal info from either Tom or the club. If this is not the case, I apologise.

What else makes me sick is GWS in general. What a smug bunch of operators. A bunch of hasbeen coaches and administrators waving around the AFLs money, demanding respect. Gold coast showed how to arrive with class and dignity. GWS are just sharks.

Ask Geelong or Brisbane supporters if they feel GC arrived with class and dignity. You are only saying this because one of our players wasn't paoched by them.

Both franchises have waved the brown paper bags around, only GW$ appears more sinister to us because of the men fronting it ... Sheedy and Allen and the fact that they swiped our player.

Ultimately, this is ALL Demetriou's handiwork.

He is ruining and corrupting the game.

The phrase "clear and concise" and your posts do not go hand in hand.

And that wasn't a good reason for us to be compliant.

You really think the club is willing to be GWS' [censored] in return for the faint chance they might do us a favourable trade later on when we have zero leverage?

I don't.

We'll soon see if your thoughts have any merit.

I very much doubt they will.

And do you really believe that the Club hasnt suspected for along time whats really happening...and KNOWN it for just a bit less ?

This is Football..a War played as Sport...and the first casualty of War is ..........?

Would it have mattered? I don't think so. I can't remember if it did to be honest, but do you expect GWS to play by the rule book? Who is going to sanction them? Their big fat Greek sugar daddy? I don't think so.

Why couldn't we offer 3rd party agreements to help secure him? This is what I want to know. I call discrimination. It's good for the goose but not the gander.

And I don't buy into the idea that we knew but kept quiet to help grease the trade wheels. That doesn't make sense to me. GWS have AFL backing, we don't in this case. It's "bow to the big fat man's demands" and that is all.

Darren, sorry to be blunt but some posters need to be bludgeoned over the head with the truth and have smelling salts waved in front of their noses in this instance. I do this mercifully.

Scully lied. Schwab publically backed him up. Ergo ... we must ride this one out to the station.

No choice bro.

The MFC is good enough for the likes of Trengove, Watts, Frawley, Petterd, Tapscott, Gawn and a whole host of other promising juniors to commit. Make of that what you will.

No doubt about that, but the challenge in the future remains nevertheless, especially with free agency just around the corner. Like it or not, the MFC had not and does not attract and retain marquee players. Right now, we have no genuine star, which is a must in boosting membership and continuing to attract sponsors.

I think you are on the money here...Tom is contracted till the end of October, so why wouldn't he wait till a coach is announced. Could make a massive difference to his outcome.

Considering GWS are going to struggle to win anything for at least 2 years. Regardless of the huge offer.

You would think that If a person hadn't already committed on paper to leave, then you would wait another week or so, to see who's coaching and weigh up all the facts. If one hadn't already made the commitment.

Is Tom Scully about to sully his reputations????

I kind of agree with Dermie.. why do you need to take the family up to help you make a decision. He may be a family man- sure, but what input is Mummy and Daddy going to have at the end of the day re facilities etc. Surely this is to show them his surroundings for the life of his new contract- not seek approval.

Ergh. [censored] the big fat greek dictator and [censored] the senile Sheeds.

I want to know why we couldn't offer the kid a third party payment, like Judd gets. I don't think enough noise has been made about this point. I feel like the MFC has been discriminated against.

Either way the club goes on. Good luck playing for GWS.

If I hear him say I did this for the challenge I will fair dinkim fuckin spew!!!

He's about to move cities and change employers and his parents can't be involved? He's only 20 FFS, and it's a big decision to make.

It this moment I suspect aht the MFC knew how all this was going to pan out and elected to play along ( as if it really has a choice ) but in a manner to exact its greatest compensation.

At this stage I don't care if he stays or if he goes. The writing on the wall says he's gone but I'm still waiting for him to confront the media and announce it himself. This has dragged on for far too long for anyone's liking. For Scully, it's his reputation that has been damaged throughout all of this and that is hard to earn back. Of course, if he signs with MFC, then I think he'll earn it back but I think most of us feel a little used along the way. He has lost the support of the fans though I know most of us are sitting on the fence...and if he re-signed we would be jumping out of our seats with joy. I'm sure the ending will be an anti-climax! Sheedy and Demetriou will be rubbing their hands together and laughing at how easy it was to poach the No.1 draft pick. However, I still have my fingers crossed!

That's absolute crap.

It's bad enough when you present your suppositions as fact, but your judgments of how the club would and should react to these events follows no sensible process.

You think Scully has lied and the club is playing party to a charade to save face?

Saving face would be the club standing up and acknowledging Scully is gone, and releasing the bad news on our terms.

Whatever, go chase the money and be miserable and unsuccessful for the rest of your career.

This is what happens when dumb 19 year olds are given stupid amounts of money.

The least he can do is grow a pair of balls and stop being such a coward and just announce it already. Turning this into a circus is completely disrespectful to our club, a club that picked him up and nurtured him for two years. Pathetic.

[censored] the hell off, and let us move on with our compensation picks.

We are the Melbourne Football Club. We've been around for 151 years and no snotty-nosed money hungry kid is going to undo us.

Life changing decision to be made, but if you have your parents there for support, it means he has already decided?

Honestly, this process would be terrible to go through on your own if you were still undecided.

You need someone there to watch your back and bring you back to earth and put things in perspective when you've been blinded by the lights.

I'm sure GWS would put on one hell of a show, and it would be more than handy to have some grounding that reminded you of what you'd be leaving behind.

I don't have a clue either way, but to claim his parents presence is some definite sign is serious misnomer.

If Jimmy knew the truth the club would have, and it would have been accompanying the news that he was missing the Port game. We would have been releasing that info right away.

There is no benefit to keeping the info to ourselves. I don't buy into this helping our compo theory. The compo is based on a formula- not our willingness to play a game of secrets.

Anyway now we should make some noise about getting the best compo we can possibly get.

I just can't wait for the presser- I want to hear his reasons. Like I said, if it's not just about the money and he says he wants a challenge blah blah I'm going to spew.

Good luck Mr Sully.

Yes..its based on formulae.. Part of all that is inferred value.. i.e the respective contracts on table etc etc. The higher the pay form GWS..the higher the compo to us.

I've spent this entire year supporting and backing Tom Scully to death, but I'm done.

Seriously, this charade is becoming a joke and I have no respect left for someone who is now treating our club with such open contempt.

If you want to leave, just leave. Don't drag out your decision, make a mockery of our club, take your time pissing off to Western Sydney, I mean come on, have some common level of decency for your club!

Well my theory is you don't actually need your parents to see the facilities, as its a no brainer they are going to be top notch. Also it's been reported that Scully's parents have given him their blessing to move there for his career. So the way I look at it is that he is giving them the tour of his new palace.

I was in the undecided camp up until I heard about this. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am, but this new revelation has just made me feel he is gone-ski.

Exactly my point; It's based on a formula. The formula doesn't have a keep quiet for as long as possible so we can break the news clause in it.

I want GWS round 1 next year... What's the bet Mr Sully pulls out though...

Lets move on to discuss our compo. I would rather 2 new draftees who are committed to the cause.

I am so sad about this. I thought his professoinal attitude would translate to want of premiership glory- not a fat bank account!

Thanks for [censored] all over Barrassi's jumper. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Mr Sully...

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
