Given the injury to young Strauss, I started thinking about who might replace him in the back line. Whilst I think we have adequate coverage with the likes of MacDonald, Bartram, Tapscott, Rivers, Garland and Frawley all down there, I also had a thought that perhaps Maric could be trialled on half back, in a similar manner to the path Leon Davis and Chris Yarran have taken this year.

I've always found Maric to be speedy and a reasonably good field kick. He has come through the ranks as a forward but seems to panic a bit under the pressure of being in the forward pocket, and not being a natural crumb-er.

With four round remaining, and Maric seemingly otherwise headed for the trade table or scrap-heap, I'd love to him trialled down back/behind the ball. Even if in the VFL to start with. In my humble opinion he's too talented to be lost to the club.

Maric not AFL standard.

Fair point. But like a few others on our list, he's way above VFL standard. Same with Bate, Dunn and Warnock - all of them dominate in the VFL but struggle at AFL level. Is the gulf really that big between the standards? (probably yes).

Green to HBF. We should not need to rely on Green in the forward line when we have so much forward talent to develop (sans FF, Jack CHF). Green may play his last year, whenever that might be, in the BP anyway. Correctly, Green's overall best footy has been forward, but his best year was when playing back.

I don't see Maric 'rushing the yards' at his point. Green can get contested ball, mark, and rake accurate left foot kicking through the opposition structures.

His preseason showed he can play as a forward pocked, but he hasn't been up to it regularly in the real stuff. I think if he played in a top side he could be good enough to be in and out of the team in his best position which is FP, but thats about it.

Worth a try before we delist

If thats what you think try him @ Casey in the role because he's not physical enough to do that in an AFL defence. He'd get the brush off quicker than a fly at a Bar-B-Que.

I don't think it's worth investing any more games into Maric. He is fairly decent in the NAB cup and probably in the VFL too, but it's been firmly proven he can't cut the mustard at AFL level. And on top of that there is more than enough developing small forwards already on the list.

There is an abundance of talent in the VFL and WAFL that is worthy and waiting to be tried in the AFL, keeping guys like Maric on the list serves no purpose but to clog it. Why hang onto somebody to become the next Brad Miller instead of taking the chance to find the next Barlow, Podsiadly, Mzungu, Curnow, etc.?

Nothing wrong with Marric in my opinion. It was never likely to happen under Bailey for he didn't like the left field experimentation. Maybe Todd will be more open. But I would think he would try him on the backline at Casey first.

Maric improved this year, I don't think they'll move him on yet.

I don't think Maric will make it but I do agree with you that he improved this year

He improved thru the preseason, true. But his application/tenacity at the contest is nowhere near what you'ld hope for from a player with 3 seasons under his belt. He has the skills that tease, he keeps showing them in snippets, but the lack of "Have a go", just pulls the belief right from under his own feet.

Not such a bad idea. I'd be more interested to see Flash play some defensive roles ala Leon Davis, and instead of a quarter back role, simply playing on a forward.

Four seasons.

Has shown nothing. Textbook delisting. This would be the easiest decision that the club has this year. The only question is based on his height and pace and personality, why was he drafted?

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
