I am well aware of front and back loaded salaries and the like for list management purposes. I made two original points.

First, The Age article today highlighted why clubs do not need to pay excessive amounts for an individual player given the availability of talented lower draft status players.

Second, mature and proven players at some clubs have chosen to play for lower payments in order to keep the 'team' together.

Smart list management is an important component of ongoing successful clubs.

Can you give me a link please .... sorry I don't read the papers much these days. So full of garbage ... you spend half your time getting more & more confused.

Its not arrogance at all - its frustrating trying to continually have to clarify ones position as it gets misreprented so often.

If he goes I'll consider him a mercenary, as he'll make tremendous money from Melbourne over his career. And if he stays I'll consider him a very selfish individual that strung the club, his teammates, and supporters out until the end of the season even though he had both clubs offers 2 months prior. But I hear them say, "Tom has always said he'll make his decision at year's end". Bully for Tom.

Wheately and Robbo were discussing Rodney Eade and the back page headline discussing him as an Adelaide coaching target - after which the issue grew legs was then raised at the Bulldogs and the question asked of Rodney Eade.

Wheately said to Robbo - "nobody believes this story - its just PAPERTALK that the media like to do" and Robbo agreed with him. What does this tell us about the integrity of Journo's or is it more about their willingness to write anything that will get them the byline and a back page.

I doubt you would give a flying about an arguable distraction if you had a life changing decision to make - especially one that you already said a year in advance that you were not going to discuss it until the end of the season.

And I very much doubt that the spotlight that has come with the 'stringing along' would hasten your decision...

1/ Pick upgrades or down grades in some drafts make little to no difference you still get your man ie Geelong & Essendon to an extent

2/ Good clubs irrespective of what pick you give them have a better ability to develop kids because they spend more money inside their football department to increase the probability of peak performance.

Mumford was the classic case I was trying to explain above, due to salary cap restrictions Geelong could not put any "blue sky" in his contract .... where Sydney could ... they bought potential & ohhh how its paid off.

Its not really forward loading or back loading as such. Its one football club trying to predict the future and stave off the opposition clubs from circling. Or is a second club offering where they think the player can get to on their list ... another recent example was Shaun Grigg last year from Carlton.

Now again, referencing the article one very important point that many may miss is the roll of Wells brokering the deals. Wells is a very astute and empathetic dealer around AFL circles. Now I'm not sure if I should say this .... However, it goes back to my very, very first comment in the whole saga ... Why I thought Richmond where our major threat ... I see CC as a very empathetic mover who would see the argument from both sides and have the ability to broker a deal. However, most around here totally discount all possibilities of a third party involvement. (However, as I've said I hope it never comes to that)

So if the alleged offer from GWS is correct I'm positive it has an element of "blue sky" for a talent like Scully. Sheedy is prepared to pay today and get a return in a few years time.

I should add, I generally zone out when the guys talk about it. Its quite a sophisticated rating system based on past performance, current performance & peak performance combined with probabilities. Every player in the league is rated every recruit is rated with a margin for error. Then you can attempt to predict salaries & trade options. (& of course draft options)

Just finished reading the Ben Cousins book (which is a great read) and interestingly he chooses to sign his contract at the prime of his career with no pay rise at all when he could have named his price. This was to ensure there was enough for West Coast to be able to keep Judd and Kerr who he knew would be needed to win a Premiership and both where out of contract. When he does this Judd and Kerr are so inspired they both resign within a week. A premiership follows.

Massive IF ... you also must consider where Tom wants to go. You must also consider would GWS "buy" him if they had to pay from him themselves .... instead of "paying" for him via AFL compensation picks, if that is in fact them paying. Would you spend $1 million dollars a year on a player that doesn't want to play for you .... let me think about that one ...

But again many have discounted this option from day 1 ... they will continue to discount it ... beacuse they will believe what they want too or what they read in the media.
