Your kidding.

Straus looked soft and confused. IMO, he is well off the pace.

If you really came away thinking that, then you need to come to grips with the fact your judgment is poor.

He showed a lot.

Although, to say you'd select him over Melksham is a stretch.

I don't however agree that Melksham was one of their best on the night.

He was disappointing, and needs to bulk up.

Melksham is good, hard at it. Would you pick him before Gysberts though? Chuckle.

I'd like to see Strauss tried in the Zaharakis role, you know the one where no one rates you enough to stay on you and you run around getting cheap goals.

yeah right, he looked comfortable in that 2 on 1 contest on the last line of defence after Watts muffed that kick backwards to him.

uppercut yourself.

it's interesting because at the draft function C.C made it quite clear we were very keen on Melksham with that pick and seemed a little disappointed he got taken before our pick. no swaps now though thanks.

He's terribly slow.

He had the ball 20 metres forward and couldn't run 20 metres to kick a gift goal.

Melksham was one of their best on Friday.

Both of them have about 10 times the credits Strauss has.

That's not to say Strauss won't make it as a player, but right now, if you had to pick one, it wouldn't be Strauss (it would be Melksham IMO).

If it's a matter of needs we absolutely need a pacy back flanker with skills, Melksham is a good footballer but we need his ilk less.

Sorry, I don't see the relevance.

At all.

The relevence is that he is a three game player because he has not been good enough to play more than that, not because he is new to the game. He has had three years of development at an AFL club, and he should be judged as such.

Now we are getting somewhere....

He has had trouble getting continuity at any level due to injury, and his confidence was smashed early last year. He was at that time deemed good enough to play senior footy.

If he makes it he wouldn't be the first defender to work his way back after losing his S*&t early. From the little I have seen of him at Casey and the reports I have heard he is worth persisting with in the senior side. He has some tools in his kit that not many others have. Let see if he can start to use them.

Whilst this may be the case not every player is drafted as a ready made AFL footballer. He came to the club as a skinny kid with no definition and is now playing as a man. Not every man is built like Tapscott from 17 and therefore for an even playing field it makes more than 3 years to judge a player and for that to make the comment that he should be judged because he's been in the system 3 years and played 3 games is idiotic.

Agree, but the quote was in repose to a poster who could not understand why he should not be compared to a first year three game player.

Gary Lyon rates Strauss .

I really can't knock any recruit at all yet as I see huge potential in all of them .

. We could be looking at a Dynasty to rival the greatest team ever ... Us .

Bailey couldn't have carved a better list if he were Michaelangelo .

I just loved Jodie Macs game last friday and thought he was the difference in attitude.

Newton , Dunn and Ozzie will struggle to stay on the list unless they step up I reckon.

Martin could be anything , Maric has class ,Morton finally clicked (but needs some steroids) ,Jetta will star ,

Can anyone tell me why Bate get a rough trot?

Bring it on, i want to see him perform too, but as yet he is not an elite kick.

Because he can't get into a rough trot...

The guy can play good footy, but he steps up and he can't step up.

His hands aren't great at the minute, and he lacks confidence.

And he can be exploited the other way, unlike Howe who looks like he has a bit of toe on him.

Loved Bate a couple of years ago, but he hasn't come on.

And I was going to mention the other 192cm forward we have down at Casey but the less said about him the better...

Bate can hold a grab and he can run to the right spots .

he has been a target for us when our forwards stand around like spectators and he can kick a goal from 50 .

Beware the revenge of the bloodnut !

I would prefer to keep the forward line:

Gawn/Martin, Green, Jurrah

Jetta, Howe, Watts

They all contribute to the press (when they attempt it) very well.

Except Gawn...

If you have Gawn or Jamar or Martin down there then Bate becomes a liability with his 'continental drift' like movement.

Not surprised you don't get it, considering your track record.

In reference to a young player making errors at AFL level, the amount of games experience adjusting to the level is relevant.

Just as the number of games at another inferior level isn't.

Both players have had the same amount of time adjusting to the speed, the physicality and the pressure of AFL level football.

You could even make a case that Evans has more recent experience, and also more experience against modern defences than Strauss, whose 2 previous games were early last season.

Strauss will go if Bartram or Tapscott are ready. Simple as that. Not a cross against his performance but those two select themselves if fit.

I think it's more likely we'd drop Nicholson and let Tapscott come back via Casey.

I think if Strauss steps up it could free up Tapscott to play midfield/forward flank. He will be more damaging for us there kicking goals & hitting targets forward of the centre. He will also be very hard to match up on as not many are equal to his size & have as good overhead ability. I can see him playing similar to the stewie dew or Chappy role in our mid rotations.

Bartram will probably displace Strauss short term. Long term I hope it's a different scenario as good kicks are gold in today's football. Kicking through or over the zone is a skill Bartram will struggle to develop & is a limited footballer IMO. I like how he applies himself but can see his place in the side under threat if players such as Strauss develop.

What's the track record [censored]?

It was never a debate about a young player, it was comparing a third year three game player to a first year three game player. A third year player, at 21 years old with three years of coaching, who is not good enough to play more than 3 senior games, should not be compared to a new recruit. Not hard to understand to most people.

Move one? I'm not fussed.

The argument was over a player's ability to adjust to AFL level of intensity based on a certain amount of exposure.

Pretty simple concept in isolation.

We don't agree, but based on your track record Thomo, I don't think it's likely we will.

I often don't agree with things you post on this forum.

Moving on...

Anyone see Garry Lyon's breakdown of his running on Footy Classified?

What a freak.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
