WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

Featured Replies

I've listened to the interview and he said nothing of the sort. He said we'd take him if we thought he was the best available at pick 3 and it depended what would be available at the first live pick, which would be pick 2.

Report what you hear, not what you think someone means.

And fwiw, I have zero doubt we'll take him.

Gonna say - I walked away after listening to the same interview without the perception that we wont be taking Viney if push comes to shove.

Are people kidding themselves into believing that the Suns who have had to combat player exodus every year would go an pick another player who most say isnt even rated at top 2 and who is definately unlikely to want to stay. Why would they take that gamble to lose pick 2 for a player that isnt worth it according to the posts above???

Makes zero sense.

Say or think what you will. I know what will happen anyway.

GC will bid for viney, cause they are still [censored] at us in letting go of Scully.

Doh meant GWS [censored] at us for letting them have scully...

I think the more important point is that everyone else on the radio suggested we would not pursue Viney as there are better players to pick. that points was very solid.

It should be noted that everyone on the radio at the time were idiots of the highest calibre: Barrett, Wallace, and some other [censored] I don't know the name of.

Did any one Just Hear Tim Harrington on trade week radio??

Almost certain if GC bid for Viney we will let him go to the suns.

I listened to that and I didnt take that from his comments. To me it was more that they would have to work out whether he is worth a pick 3 at that time or whether they could use a live pick 2 for a better choice (than a tough midfielder with uncomprimising loyalty to a club on the bottom of the ladder).

Think about it this way:

1. Viney is the only top rounder that has any loyalty to our club

2. Viney is the best and most developed midfielder out of the top rounders

3. the Suns have about three or four players trying to weasle their way home last year and this year. Would they risk their second pick on a bloke who through all intents and purposes is likely to do the same?

Its all a bluff - wait and see!

Don't know if you've been to Sydney recently, but there's a big bridge in the middle of the harbor. It's for sale.

Little confused with this post, am trying to work out what point the author is trying to make is any or whether they cut and paste a Cryptic Crossword clue from the local rag.

Oh and BTW Jack will be playing for melbourne next year is what I heard from the interview.

Given players are often taken in a different order to pre-draft speculation., if the the suns rate him #2, maybe the current spec of a rating around 6-8 is wrong compared to other draftees? The question is not his speculative ranking but is he the best player in the top 10 that suits what we need? From what I know he is so we take him whether at #3 or #26.

Like many posters here I believe JV will be at the dees next year.

If we have to take viney at 3, just take him at 3. Take Wines at 4 as well, good friends from school and both tough on ballers. With the way i see it if we pick them both, it should make the transition easier...

having said that, if viney does slip, it's a win anyway

I would be extremely happy with Viney and Wines. Our midfield will have two of the best inside mids in the game. For a crappy midfield like ours that is just invaluable.

I would jump early at a guy like Wines. I think he looks like a safe bet, and we need a safe bet. I would use pick 4 on him even if we are forced to use 3 on Viney. Lock up these two and you can look at some outside "cream" with #13. Happy days.

And an important reminder to the MFC- this draft has the potential to shape our culture, so do not stuff it up please? Thanks :)

are you sure that Viney is worth his pick?

I mean that Pick 3 is VERY HIGH.

personally i would take Viney pick 3 and than go and take Nathan hvorat pick 4

We must take best player available. If Viney is best available, so be it. But if we take him at #3 and he is not the best available, it is a disgrace.

Moreover, I doubt many amateur watches have seen enough of the all the potential draftees to make an informed view of where he ranks in the draft pool.

That may be so Fat Tony, but in this case Viney potentially means a lot more to the MFC than he might to various other clubs. From what I've read, it seems to me that it'd be a very big mistake not to recruit him in the circumstances. For a start, recruiting a hard nut, extremely competitive kid to the MFC under the father/son rule could greatly assist in changing the cultural perceptions people have about the club.

We've also had a very poor history with first round draft picks, so I'm not confident that we'd nail the so-called 'best available' anyway - it's always a lottery. So, to my mind, it'd have do be a very, very compelling case not to draft Viney in favour of some other player.

And relevantly, whilst I don't know about his quality relative to the other 5 or 6 players in the mix, I know for fact that he is an absolute gun. I've heard such feedback from a player who played with him at North Adelaide (who was previously a rookie at the Bulldogs) - he regularly stated he'll make a bloody good AFL player in due course, and the Dees will be lucky to get him.

I will be suprised if Hrovat goes inside the top 20 personally. There's every chance he'll still be available by the time it gets to our 3rd round draft pick IMO.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Viney. End of the day I reckon the decision that the FD have to make is who would they prefer, Viney or Grundy?

For those that dont quite get it yet.... Theres a game being played out.

Every team is trying to get the best deals.the best players etc. Its like chess.

Interesting that the Sun article says that GWS has decided not to nominate JV and take Whitfield. It also says that no club has had to pay a top 10 pick for a F/S before. It would be typical if we had to and lose pick 3.

IMO GC are convinced we will take JV whatever, despite the huffing and puffing. Knowing that, it would be a spiteful decision to nominate him. One can only imagine the reaction of Eddie if it was a Pies F/S.

BB is correct, every team is trying to do the best deal for itself. I just hope we end up doing a deal to protect pick 3. I am convinced that is what GC are angling at. I just hope we don't stuff this up and lose pick 3.

If you were GC what would you do? I'd be bidding for certain. It automatically improves whatever pick they get for Caddy when they trade him. Melbourne will take him at 3 - they have invested 2 years of development into him. He is universally rated top 10, and by most within the top 7. Stop worrying, he will be well worth it.

Yes, they want our help in getting Tippett I reckon by giving them Pick 13 and a makeweight for Caddy.

I really hope we are in their ear saying that we will help them get Tippett and keep their Pick 2, if they just idle about next Monday at 10am.

I reckon Monday at 10am will be a busy time on here.

Nasher - here comes a new record.

i just can't see why GC would bid.

Assuming Jack has gone in there and said something along the lines of "I don't want to move away from home". We all know interstate kids have done it to Victorian clubs to deter them? What about Elliot Kavanagh's dad scaring off all the clubs last year until he got drafted to Essendon?

What's the difference? It isn't draft tampering. It's just a kid expressing his thoughts on moving interstate. It's pretty simple

I'm happy if we take him at 3 - we'll be making a positive statement about culture and we won't be encumbered with trade favours to GWS and GC. That said I'd prefer we can take him in the 2nd round with some win-win deals. Not taking him is not an option for me.

Jack is never going to say that and we shouldn't expect him to.

He was born to play this game, genetically engineered by two very impressive parents to acquire leather by any means necessary.

If we are going to play this game of chicken - Jack has to meet with other clubs and he is not going to be anything other than impressive.

I may be wrong here but if we trade our pick 3 for mini draft and say pick 4 and a player for say tippett do we then only have to use pick 13 on viney as it is our first available pick Silly notion I know just wondering

Go and read a few Viney threads if you are interested because...

1. Can not use comp picks on Viney - Pick 4 and 13.

2. Bidding is done at the start of trade week, the MD is done two weeks later.

Ahh fair enough yeah I just wasn't sure. All in all if we do not draft Viney we are incredibly stupid. Even if he's not top 3 material now who's to say he wouldn't be in a few years. I mean look what we did with Morton he was a top 4 pick and he has done nothing at all. So many upsides to drafting Viney. We know he can play against men, he is a strongly built boy and can everyone remember how happy we were when he signed for us last year. Supporters will be happy, the football club will benefit and Jack himself will be happier. It's a no brainer for mine just playing mind games with GC

Why not?

Take away the fact that Melbourne has the right to take Jack under the father son rule and he is just another young player looking to get drafted that has signalled his intentions that he would like to stay at home as opposed to uprooting his life and moving interstate.

It happens all the time. Natanui, Wingard are all examples of players indicating to interstate clubs that it's their preference to stay at home. I just don't see how it is any different?

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
