There are a few articles on the Dees today in the Herald Sun. The pressure is getting turned up on the Dees which is good to see. Another loss will continue to increase the pressure but a win will ease it slightly.

From what I have seen in the past when the articles start, the pressure is increased and most importantly the big cheese comes out in support of the coach it normally ends in a new coach being appointed. Will see how long it lasts.

The Bemm River smoke is wafting down, actually from the East strangely. This hasn't happened for some decades, since the great Richmond stalwart, Jack dyer, caught and cooked his catch, from Bemm River. This El Ninja weather stream it seems is blowing the smoke west these days, to downtown Melbourne.

It's got a Blue Cod whiff, even if the whiff is a bit old and 'off' for the nose. The Catch could be fresh from Andersons Inlet! But who's the Master Chef? Who to Bake the Catch into a real meal, deal???

MM'm, a P'R exercise is in the cards, is DON really good?

I think its good we r under the pump

We will beat Adelaide this week, no doubt. Thats the problem tho as when we have our backs against the wall we win but week to week consistency and a good culture is very much out of reach

Need to be stronger n more ruthless.

Don't care if we win the next 3, get me roos or malthouse or matthews asap

Agree totally Watts. DB needs to go. Consistency apart from a game plan is what we lack big time. Even under ND we had no consitency. Its time for a change no doubt about that its just a matter of time.

You hit the nail on the head Ox. We have no consistency. That insipid performance the other night is just another one that the MFC have consistency put out over the years/decades. It doesn't matter about the playing list, the coach or the administration - these peformances are riddled in our past. Sure every club puts in a bad one from time to time but the MFC do this on a regular basis. I can only put it down to the culture of the club and some "intangible cancerous tumour" that infects the club psyche.

We need an outsider to coach the MFC and change the culture but to do that he must have coached AFL premierships in the past (not just played) and be tough and uncompromising and command enormous respect. All paths lead to Malthouse.

The only pathetic display that is Bailey's fault are the ones he has overseen.

Stop attributing the decades of Melbourne being awful to Bailey.

'We have another nothing coach just like we had from 66 to when Northey came...'

Some of you don't realize how pathetic THAT sounds...

Agree we need an outside coach but what is MM and Roos reject the MFC. Who do we look at? Maybe Matthews or Blight with G Lyon as assistant with the view of taking over in a few years. Maybe also chuck Viney into the equation. Your thoughts??

RPFC where exactly did I blame DB for the decades of inconsistency?????????? I did refer to ND. Have another read.

Agree with your comment though that we dont need another nothing coach.

I think Matthews use by date has expired. Listening to his special comments on the box he doesn't offer much of an insite into the game these days and I think the game has past him by. Blight has been there done that and he has proven to be tough and uncomprising (and unorthodox) but I am not sure he would be interested particularly with his GC connections. So the field starts to narrow after this. However, we all agree we "potentially" have a very good list and with Jimmy's power of pursuasion I would be surprised if we could not get MM or Roos over the line.

I am totally against G Lyon or Todd becoming coach. They are coming out of the same MFC culture. They are great past players and most definitely should be involved in the club. But a new direction and new culture is needed. One where no matter who we are playing and where we are on the ladder we all know as supporters that the players donning the red and blue are going to have a fair dinkum crack week in week out. Its a tough standard to live up to but one we need to strive for.

Malthouse has coached for a long time and up until last year his last premiership was 1994. Notwithstanding that I can't recall a Malthouse coached team putting in too many insipid performances. He demands respect and commands his players to go hard or go home! (Don't you love that cliche!)

Just saw another article titled "Captain backs Bailey long-term" on the Dees website. BG said "Bailey has the full support of the players, and they want him at the helm".

So now we have the captain and Stynes coming out in support of DB. You know what that means??? Its another nail in the cofin. Bring it on.

im not sayin matthews as head coach but matthews as part of the football team with a viney or someone as head coach.

you reckon mark thompson does much except help create the culture at essendon?

Barrassi helped change Sydney, Matthews could play a director of coachin role.

He wouldnt accept Baileys antics, nor Mortons softness, nor our clubs mediocrity

Morton's Softness... I agree... But he is not alone...?? I don't know who we need , but I do know we Don't need Bailey.

Is this the same Matthews who recruited Travis Johnstone? ;)

I think it's the Same Matthews who coached Brisbane to 3 successive Premierships ,played in winning premierships for the Hawks, Coached Collingwood in 1990 to it's first Premierships in 32 years, has undeniably more football knowledge than DB would ever dream of having (score is on the Board???) Oh and yes you are right... recruited Travis Johnstone, whom was originally a number 1 Melbourne Footy Club Draft Pick, I believe...What an indictment on his overall ability... I "don't" think.

Not a bad call - if we can't snag Malthouse or Roos then a promising coach under the mentoring of Matthews would work. As I said earlier Matthews doesn't have the sharpness of mind anymore to make game day moves and develop meaningful game plans. But he would still be capable of building a team of coaches and mentoring them and players and build a winning culture. However, I suspect Matthews is comfortable in the media and could not be coaxed into such a role.

So we really need to put all our eggs into the Malthouse (or Roos but preferably Malthouse) basket. Of course if we recover from where we are now and end up at 10 wins at the end of the year do we keep Bailey? At the beginning of the year 10 wins was considered the minimum number required to save DB and it would show we have progressed somewhat - albeit slowly. Or do we bite the bullet and get rid of him anyway. My view is get rid of him anyway as he has failed to fix two recurring problems that have been evident since round 1 2008:

1. Our lame first quarters. This is a Bailey trademark and continues to cause issues 71 games after his coaching debut. He must have them drinking cups of tea doing meditation under a pyramid prior to the game judging by the way we start games!

2. The differential of inside 50's against our opponents. I know we are all frustrated by this. Am I over simplifying it? Play on at all costs and kick the ball long into the forward line asap and give the opposition little time to set up their structures. I'II back LJ one out against anyone in the league. And I sure Sylvia, Dunn, Wona, Petterd and Bennell will probably do alright in one on one or two on two contests.

Which ever way you look at it DB hasn't fixed this problem even though every single supporter knows its an issue for us and has been from DB day 1!

Hints of rift in the nest

Amazing how things can happen, how the timing of events and the momentum of influences can prove irresitable.

Personally I have another option in preference to Micky Mouse coming to Melbourne but whilst a month ago I could have argued that this was all but moot if not improbable this might not be so water-tight anymore.

"Speculation abounds that Malthouse will coach elsewhere, particularly as eight coaches are out of contract this season, including a suddenly under-siege Dean Bailey at Melbourne."

If there is any glint of an opportunity there at all, we should be making a play for Malthouse now, NOT waiting until season's end when the horse may have bolted.

Call him Jimma.

id be very happy with a Laidley - Viney combination

youd be mad ..if not criminal not to look at Malthouse..., not to talk to Roos

in fact not to have a good look around.

no more pups though

I can only imagine there are proprietaries that would need to be observed if attempting to flesh out the intents of a coach still currently active at another club, especially the head coach..

Still ,what happens in shadows is often a different thing ;)

Roos is everything we need in a coach... His modern, uncompromising, and his players gave their all regardless of stature or ability. He is what we need for our list. Look at how well longmire is doing after his tutorship, This is the only option forward for our Club in my opinion.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
