The Last Time They Met

The last time these sides met was at the G back in Round 8 last year.

Melbourne was coming off the back of an unlucky loss to a leading team in the Western Bulldogs while the Eagles' form was chopped liver.

Melbourne flopped.

That game was absolutely awful. Was a perfect Melbourne day (much like today) yet somehow both sides managed to play terrible footy - with ours being particularly bad.

Ugh :(

Without a doubt the worst match of football I have ever been to. The standard of football, coupled with losing to the undisputed worst team of the year, at home, at a ground at which they had only won once since 2006, coming off a promising performance against the Dogs, was just putrid.

I just got a shiver down my spine :(

I think there will be seven changes to the side from last year.

Not sure what that says or how different the eagles side will be.

Anyone heard the weather forcast for Perth on Thursday evening?

Will Watts be in the side?

Only disagree with your comment "the worst match of football I have ever been to"

You must have missed 40 -50 I have been to over the years.

It was poor but we only got done by 29 points.

There have been many that were a lot worse in quality and result.

The saddest thing about last years game was that it was over by the 2 minute mark of the first Quarter. I said as much to my Dad at the time.

Last years game against Wet Coke sums up all the years between now & 1965 really, and why other sides and supporters do not fear us.

I hope Bails makes a large point about last years game, as i doubt many would have picked Wet Coke in any tipping competition.

We can win over there. Time for this club to get nasty (like a corresponding game John Northey coached over there in 1989-Now that was a hard fought victory!!)

I remember it well, Balls Grinter kicked a mighty running goal from inside the centre square...and an all in Brawl including coach and assistants at 3/4 Time-Thems were the days...oh and it was live on 7...!

Fire Up this Thursday Demons....

a 29 point loss to that rabble on our own ground on a beautiful sunny day last year was one of the worst i have ever witnessed as well.

Should have smacked them by 69 points at least. Any other AFL side would have.

Still think you need to search your memory a little.

I can think of worse losses. Couple of hundred-point tonkings spring to mind. Not to mention THAT elimination final against Essendon.

That one felt pretty bad though, more because we were on a good run, confidence was high, then we were just...awful.

I have seen some beltings O.D like yourself, but last years effort was a disgrace against Wet Coke considering the circumstances.

Remember in 2009 we Beat them well with Jimma in Hospital. It is all to do with our soft underbelly.

This is a perfect game to gauge our FD coaches....How well do they prepare this young side?

Yesterday's ANZAC day game showed us all that young first year players can play a big part in big tough games...it is how they are prepared beforehand.

God I had to get drunk at this game to be able to sort of tolerate what I was witnessing.

Well I think I'm considerably younger than you, but from the 10 years of football memories I have, I honestly cannot think of a worse day I have spent at the football. Sure, the consecutive 100 point thrashings to start 2008 weren't great, but for mine, that game last year had absolutely nothing going for it.

Yeah ive been going to see the dees since probably 97-98 and that was unquestionably the most dissapointed id ever felt leaving a game. It was a spineless performance in so many ways considering where the Eagles were at and that we had so much to play for (considering we'd just come off a tough but gallant loss to the highly rated Bulldogs and had a chance to go 4-4 for the season) One of my fellow demon mates said yesterday though that hed take that performance if we are to go over to Perth and really try to make up for it and crush them tomorrow night with games against Adelaide and North to follow.

Of that team that played WC last year four players (bold) are no longer at the club, four players (underlined) are struggling to get a game and two are injured (italics).

This highlights that 10 players in tomorrows team didn't play last year and emphasises changes the team has been undergoing and why it's almost impossible to use last years performance to speculate on this years.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
