With the arrival of Tappy to the backline, IMO, this could be the release that James Strauss needs to free him up a bit, and perform at ease. He is IMO, atmo in competition with the likes of Blease, Watts, Bennell, & to a lesser degree, Morton. I think a possible wing spot could be beckoning to some. IMO Blease will start ringing the bell midseason, so we'll be needing to have a look at some before he demands a spot.

I thinkit would be more user freindly for a fella like Strauss to start a career, Not having the Huge resposibility of kicking in for the Mighty DEES, at this point of our great defence.

Just a thought.

I hope you a right about Straussy being ready for selection by midseason. I have heard plenty about his foot skills, but when I have seen him out at Casey he seems to struggle to find the pill. No point being sublime by foot if you can't get the footy.

My issue is we seem to lack quality kick in players. If Strauss is a good as advertised then maybe he should take kick ins.

Tappy does help our structure and will free some players up, but I think that Strauss is fairly deep on the ol depth chart to benefit from Tappy's arrival.

We still have to Squeeze Scully/Jordie and possibly a Ricky or Maric back in.

What i'm getting at is that he's been under the pump so far, and it seems the club wants to give him opportunities. I can see that in the second half of the season we'll need to give some opportunities to fellas like Bleasey and Scully, Jetta and Maric. So I think we'll need to see how Strauss is coming along whilst we have the opportunities open to try him out.

We'll need to make some hard decisions come years end, and we'll need to see them in action.

I hope we can give Straussy a go on the Wing firstly, to see how he goes in space.

Straussy cant play much worse than Morton did last week.....give morton time at casey and strauss a run for the dees!!

Worth the risk against the inexperienced suns...

I still have it on my wish-list to see Tappy on a half forward flank. For this to happen, we will need to find someone that can kick an easy 50m pass, and do it accurately. As this is a wish-list, I'm hoping that Blease will make it, and be the half back flank/designated kick in that Tappy is currently. That will then free up Strauss to play on the wing.

Amazing how our/my mind works. I don't have high hopes for Strauss, but am still expecting Blease to make it. I also have concerns about the Gys, but he contniues to mess with my head - good on him!

Agree with the OP. Strauss would be worth a run on the wing. Could be a real weapon if he starts to get his hands on it.

Bit harsh on Morton...

Came on as a sub expected to make an impact where he has consistently shown throughout his career that he is more of an accumulator and link man rather than an impact man. Came on to tag Black for a large majority of his time on the ground...

Agree that the sub is a tough gig and Morton is not neccessarily the right type, but he played about as rubbish a quarter as I have seen from anyone.

I think that's a great thought, he needs to build his confidence and as you say we need to find out if he can play.

This week would be a good to start him but who to leave out - I'm not in favour of leaving Morton out, that was his first footy for the year.

You have to expect morton to have some struggles. I mean it's his first game back after missing the entire NAB Cup and without any preparation down at Casey.

Even chippa looked a bit average against the hawks after coming back from such a long absence. Give the guy a break.

Yes but the week off is following,, and I've just dicovered that Casey also has that week off as well. So I would take the opportunity to give someone, the oportunity,,, who have had a full pre season, to give these up'n'comers the chance, they may struggle to get as we move into the main body of the season.

Send Morton back if we can manage without him this week, play Maric against the young Suns, as well as Watts, (as long as it's not Wet) and play Petterd for Dunn, who could go to Sub,,, or Martin could sub...

I would like to see Strauss in soon around the Wing, maybe to replace 'Bennell',,, if He doesn't overcome his affliction.

I've always hated "Dees", they're "Demons" to me

Maybe "Tappsco" is more manly

Altho calling something "gay" is a bit "Dees" itself

Not saying that he is not capable but Strauss would need a form turn-round of epic proportions to become a consistently useful senior player. Kicks nicely when in the clear and without pressure but does little else to inspire. Loses nearly every physical contest, fails to watch the ball, and coughs it up quickly under pressure.

I hope he can develop and get himself a dose of confidence and gumption.

I Ask You, Dandee,,,,, Just how hard do you think it Would be, to come in green, as the Kicker in Last Years team, and be a Winner!

Lets see Apples for Apples, and not Peaches for Pears!

This guy has been given the Poison chalice, and we as a group have not Questioned the situation!

Lets Wipe the slate!

The Kid starts afresh.... And we Re- Appraise without the Horrendous KickIn Duties!

This is a boy, who was Given a Veterans Duty!

Time Out! And reassess.

You obviously wouldn't like to call Magpies "pies" if you followed them like most of their fans do.

Tapscott has struggled immensely kicking out. I think its the only facet of his offensive game he's struggling with so far in the big league.

I remember distinctly last year against the Pies round 2, Strauss kicked a pin point 55 meter pass into the centre square where Bruce marked, handballed straight to Pendlebury who goaled straight back over James' head. Tough thing for a second game player playing for a team who was reigning wooden spooners.

Very hard post to read, but I agree that being given the job as designated kicker in the Melbourne defence would be one of the toughest gigs going around when we play stagnant footy.

His failure to win contested footy at the moment is my concern. The ability to actually win the football was, is and always will be the most important skill in our game. If you haven't got it you can't run with it and you can't kick it.

I hope he can be a star, I really do. Jordie Mckenzie and Luke Tapscott are young men too.

I like "the Pies" but wouldn't call them "the Maggies" that's for sure.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
