I would assume there would now be reprocussions as 1, they made the anouncment before the draft and 2. IF they chose somone else, then by Conca

If our FD pulled a trick like that and it worked, getting us our desired player, would you be so against it?

You can't possibly tell me that some of these stories we hear about certain high draft prospects haven't been cooked up by recruiting agents.

uhhh... no.

There was no announcement, it was an error on the websites behalf which was quickly rectified (not quickly enough).

And I don't think a draftee can seek compensation because a team said they would take them, but then didn't.

Could well be mind games re Conca.

Induces Gold Coast to select Polec thinking they can get Heppell at a later pick, allowing Tiges to pick him.

I like the intrigue of it all!

I just don't follow the logic there - Gold Coast sound almost certain to pick Swallow, Bennell and Day, they don't have another pick before the Tigers and the Tigers don't have another pick until well after all these players will be gone.

I know one of the kids who will be drafted today and he and his parents have been going through hell for weeks wondering where he will end up.

So they wait another 15 minutes and he goes to a different club. What's the big deal?

Posted

It's a big thing if a kid, like Panos last year for example, is commonly talked about as being a top 20 pick, but then slides right out of the draft.

He was taken as a rookie but it's a big difference.

Some though Serhat Temel was a good bet in the 2nd half of the draft, but he didn't even get rookied.

What if you're a melbourne kid, but face the prospect of being shipped off to QLD, SA, WA or Sydney?

I you're a kid like Hallahan who could go anywhere from 15-40, there's a lot that can happen.

To have Polec expecting to end up in Melb, then suddenly off to Brisbane, must be a shock to the system.

I do see what you're saying about relaxing, and I agree to an extent, but it is a big deal for these kids.

And they are kids, make no doubt about it. This will seriously shape their lives.

There is already a lot of uncertainty and it's an anxious wait, without the mind games.

No need to convince a kid he's going one way, then pull the rug out from under him.

You're right, my mistake there. I thought GC had pick 5 when in fact it's Brisbane. In light of that Conca does look set to be a Tiger.

That said, there's definitely some ducking and draking going on.

Or there's speculation by media and fans who don't have a clue ... you have absolutely no evidence of misinformation - just a bunch of phantom drafts that will get blown away in the wind of reality like the sand that they are.

It must be heartbreaking for a kid to have his hopes and dreams raised and then not get drafted, I agree. But I honestly think the ones hat do get their names called out should be elated, whatever the destination. You gotta feel for the 100 or so other hopefuls who will never get realize that dream of pulling on an AFL guernsey and running onto the MCG.

Yeah, but they are also 17 year old kids.

If drafted interstate they suddenly have to pack their bags and leave home.

It's probably a more daunting proposition for some of the parents.

Dyson Heppell said recently that a number of clubs had been calling him to ask about his groins. There was an article in the Hun about it. He said point blank they were fine, nothing wrong at all and was surprised by all the fuss.

Just one example, but definitely has the smell of some misinformation to me.

Same goes with Darling. Didn't one recruiter go on record as saying "We wouldn't be able to keep up with his drinking"? I've heard from other sources that he's actually a fairly quiet bloke in reality and those incidences were aberrations.

You're kidding yourself if you think there are no mind games involved. In fact, I suspect the various recruiters quite enjoy that aspect of it.

This is from Tugga, a mod on the Richmond board on BF:

"The AFL wants all top 10 draftees there for TV purposes seeing as Fox are making a big deal of the top 10.

Conca has been flown up to the Gold Coast today at the late request of one club so it can only mean one thing.

Welcome to Punt Rd Reece Conca."

Make of it what you will.

Heard that rumour earlier today, totally untrue.

Reece Conca was one of the original 25 invited by the AFL to be live at the Gold Coast. He was always going.

Alternatively both those stories could be true. I don't imagine Heppell or Darling would be confirming them. The most likely misinformation in those situations would be coming from the player to talk themselves up not the recruiter talking them down. Occam's Razor.

Then what do you make of the fact that Sportal are running a report that Richmond appear to have accidentally posted... "an article on the club's website seemingly outlining who they will be taking with one of their picks."? The word is that it was the press release they planned to put out upon the selection of Conca and that it was up on their site long enough to be seen by many.

I believe it happens to day - when? what channel if any is covering it?

Excellent explanation well supported by recent examples. It's very easy to see why there would be enormous anxiety for potential draftees and their folks. As you say E25, decisions made tonight will seriously shape the lives of the kids who are selected and those who miss out. There will be great excitenent for some, and enormous disappointment for others.

I'll see your Occam's Razor and raise you some Machiavellianism!

Fair enough but so far you're two at bats and 0-2.

1st: simple check of draft order - strike-out

2nd: it's more likely that a player is covering a real condition to get drafted than a recruiter is making up the condition to cause the player to slide - caught on a fly-ball.

Keep swinging ...

I would say it's more one and one. Strike on the draft order followed by a solid ground ball for no run.

Just saving my juice for the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, around the time they call the 20th name out.

I'll be happy to sign a glove for you.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
