Late flurry from Ireland including a goal (the only one of the match) but the Aussies hang on to win 0.14.5 (47) to 1.8.10 (40) at Limerick's Gaelic Grounds. The coach of the Irish team is former Demon Anthony Tohill.

Cold in Limerick but not cold enough to deter a streaker who ran on half clothed at three quarter time. Highlight of the game for the 30,000 crowd.

James Frawley (5k, 5hb) scored an over, Brad Green (4k, 2hb) quiet after starring in the lead up game. Adam Goodes scored four overs and Dane Swan got 33 touches but Juddy got the umpires' votes again demon_smile.gif

Verdict:

International Rules is crap. They should try to establish our version of the game over there. Would be much better than spending millions on new teams that steal our best players.

Halftime interview with Malthouse and he specifically gave a big wrap to a young AA defender on our list.

We seemed to improve our kicking skills compared to previous years. 10 years ago the only way we could move the ball forward was a string of handpasses (now limited to 4 in a row). Our short passing was much better, and typical malthouse defensive work slowed their game plan. It's good fun; no injuries too.

But the Hun seems to have forgotten young Frawley in their content-light article on Brad Green today - they mention him as being the odd man out while his teammates were in China...

If anyone is the odd man out, it'd have be Brucey...

I couldn't watch this for more than about 5 mins at a time, it was seriously frustrating. Not sure if it was the rules, the umpires interpretation of the rules, or the fact that we're miles better than the Irish and it's only our unfamiliarity with the ball and these rules that keeps it relatively close.

I would find a Ireland v Australia Gaelic football game (in Australia) and a Australian Rules game (in Ireland) far more interesting than this weird version of the game.

In fact, Victoria v South Australia or Western Australia would be fine by me.

The demons are having a big off-season in the meaningless games...

The Nab cup is in the bank.

Nothing is meaningless when national pride and Mick Malthouse's ego are at stake!

Sure looked like it meant something to the players from both sides. Mick was as animated as he is in any afl game.

I personally think its quite a good game to watch.

James Frawley was awesome in the first half, and then Green dominated in the second.

Fingers crossed LJ gets a run next year when the game is played in Australia. It would be some sort of spectacle!

Btw, Malthouse is a brilliant coach. He completely managed to shut down Ireland. We dominated 6 of the 8 quarters played over the two games, by just not allowing them to move the ball beyond the half way mark.

Watching James Frawley is like watching sex on the football field. He just oozes power and confidence. It really is a strange feeling to have a defender wearing a Melbourne jumper who actually doesn't cause you to crap your dacks every time he goes near the ball.

But he does cause you to do something else in your pants sometimes

He's definitely a far cry from Carroll, Shanahan and Nicholson of old... :/

Frankly it's just a fun game to watch and play, plus it gives us all something to do in the off-season other than speculation about the draft etc.

Absolutely, but also, Green and Frawley get to work under a premiership-winning coach for a while, see different systems, train and work alongside players like Swan and Goodes etc. etc. I can't dig it up now, but I noticed somewhere one of the players remarking that it had helped his defensive game by giving him different insights.

All useful I would have thought.

On another note, wouldn't have hurt Green's credentials re the captaincy either. A champ just coming into full flower (OK .. lame pun I know!!)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
