It's a blow but certainly not crippling...we have young defenders that would have struck a decent working relationship with Sean and I had heard a few interviews of late where players have mentioned Wellmans input. Frawley for one.

But as we know the world of AFL footy moves pretty quickly, the assistants can be a revolving door.

Scott West wanted to help the Dogs late this year when they were in some trouble, all assistants will always have a pull to their original clubs, especially where they have forged long careers or enjoyed success.

If he doesn't want to be at Melbourne, he can f**k off.

Sorry, but I don't like Essendon and don't like anyone that walks away from our mighty club.

Very disappointing but I can see why he would want to go back to essendon. Although im not sure why he would extend his contract this month for another year. he muist have known Hird was going to go for the essendon job and get it.

Im guessing when we play them next year he is going to have a lot of knowledge of our team and the weaknesses in our backline. He has done a great job with it htough especially getting Frawley up and going.

Is it just me or is the essendon coaching panel to essendon. I mean Hird, wellman and wallis. This could backfire big time on them. It would be funny if it does. Why cant essendon accept other people.

I mean I never heard of Dean Bailey when he took over but now im grateful we have taken a chance on an unknown.

And as much as I wanted Garry Lyon to coach us im sort of glad he didnt. If we didnt do any good I wouldnt like the members turning on him.

Im not sure who would be our next backline coach. Any thoughts?

What I resent is the fact that he signed an extension but then a month later resigned. He musr of hedged his bets (based on hird appointment) to look after number one - himself. Regardless of impact on his current employer - mfc. Karma can be a [censored] wellman and I hope you enjoy the next five years at the bottom end of the ladder with essendon while we keep moving on up...

I reckon it might be a blessing in disguise. He has been at the helm for 2-3 years now. Hopefully in that time Rivers, Frawely, Garland, Bartram, etc have gleamed as much as they can off the man. Rivers has been in the system for a while now and has had enough time on the sidelines learning the game. He is obliviously a leader on the ground.

Hopefully Bailey etc can find someone who can bring something else to the table. Maybe some run like the doggies form defence, or maybe some working class swannies defence.....

The thing that separates now from previous years when we have tried to recruit is that we have a pretty damn good list of young back men, top class training facilities and a team that is going somewhere. If you don’t want to get on that train you can bugger off buck to the Dongers.

The question should be asking is what new dimension do we want to add to our defence.

Alan Richardson is a star, I played under him

at East Burwood for two years and bled for him in that time.

He is fantastic in his ability to nurture young players & get the best out if them through development.

He has another 2 years guaranteed from Essendon but by all means if he's out of place there, get my man Richo on our couching panel!!!

According to the article in the Australian concerning Bomber Thompson linked to on another thread, Richo has only another year extension and at this stage it's a verbal agreement.

I think he'd be a quality addition.

Has spent time at the Lions during their string of premierships, experince under Malthouse.

Not many better CVs. Just seems like for some reason he's seen as being not quite up to being the head coach, but that's ok cos we don't want him for that.

Life goes on. If losing an assistant coach sets us back then we have bigger problems than that to worry about.

I personally think coaches are overrated. If you don't have the cattle then you don't have a good team no matter how good the coach is. Remember Bomber eating is salad rolls or who he agreed that there wasn't anything he could teach that team? As long as a coach doesn't stuff up then the players will decide how good a coach looks.

He did the hard work already, losing him now isn't that big a deal. It's not like the backline is going to fall apart without him.

I'd rather he stayed as I thought we were developing a good, solid team, but I'm sure we'll find someone else who will guide us to our premiership.

I heard ages ago that Wellman was going to be a part of Hird's team, but I thought when he signed a new deal with us that would be the end of it.

It's bad because Wellman has got the best results out of any of our assistant coaches, but good because I think we needed some change in the assistants. Collingwood and the Saints seem to change them pretty regularly and have no problems.

I'll be interested to see who we can get. I like the suggestion of Maxy Hudghton.

One could argue that he's set the foundations for our defensive unit, i think our biggest issue in defense was kick-ins. So if we can get someone on board to get that right we will look a lot better.

Nope, Harley has moved on from GWS. He was there to play a part in them gaining a license and forming a club, and now that has been done he has moved on.

I think he is pretty comfy in his chair at channel 7.

Is valued very highly by the players so as much as many of you are saying its just another coach blah blah im sure alot of our defenders will be devestated by the loss. however, he has given them a great base for another coach to come in and try and develop them even more.
