Hannabal actually got it spot on - everyone is racist, it's just a matter of the level.

I acknowledge racism is defined as involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. But doesn't everyone feel their own race is more superior???

My comment was not a massively racist remark like some are suggesting - merely pointing out what I have seen with the indigenous players during and after games etc (of course, we don't get to see what happens behind closed doors!).

So saying that I don't want an indigenous player as captain because they stick too much to their own kind/race is being highly racist, is it? Some people are so precious...

Nothing to do with being precious,

You are only displaying your own ignorance.

Not a "massively racist remark"?

No, just massively misguided and your argument was based entirely around race, which should be irrelevant in this discussion.

I understand. I wasn't being his apologist, although I wasn't as offended as some.

No great offense taken, but racist is racist.

Although it can be varying degrees, that was blatant.

And thoroughly misguided.

Should have gone with my first thought and kept the mouth shut...

Oh well, all I can say is no offense or racism was intended. Apologies.

Final say...

Captain: Brad Green

Vice Captain: Aaron Davey (at the very least, elevated to leadership group!)

Deezman.

Being a caucasian male in a white dominated culture, you will have never experienced anything like racism and therefore you are

in no position to say whether your comment was massively racist or not.

What do Indegenous players do after games deezman? Hang around each other? What is it you see Davey doing? Looking after the younger Indigenous boys?

To make them feel as though they can fit in? So that they feel at home? Don't get home sick? Do you have any idea of the kinds of areas that these boys are drafted from? Have you been there?

Mate I cannot begin to explain to you the hardships some of these young boys face before being thrown into an alien world that is a white dominated football club and you are telling me you think they hang around each other to much and this is your reason behind not wanting Davey as our captain?!

It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in an argument.

You have no idea.

Should have gone with my first thought and kept the mouth shut...

Accepted.

Have a read.

Fair call. I like this paragraph. Being the dominant indigenous leader at the MFC, Davey would be the only one that really truly knows how hard it is for the younger indigenous guys to feel at home etc.

But please don't call me ignorant. No clue, perhaps.

I've listened to the responses and, despite the things hurled at me, have come to my senses.

Apologies also Deezman.

All good.

On a brighter note, Davey will be out of his cast and will be ready for a full pre season.

I'm not sure about Green as captain. I've noticed an unhealthy desire on his behalf to be overly friendly to players like Jack Riewoldt and Matthew Richardson after Richmond games. I've also caught him embracing Russell Robertson more than once. He's way too insular for my liking.

I don't want Bate Captain co he's a Ranga.

I don't want Rivers Captain cos he's a South Australian.

I don't want Bartram Captain cos he's short.

I don't want Dunn Captain until he shaves off his mo.

I dont want Davey Captain because he's got curly hair.

My 4 yo son wants Liam Jurrah as the next captain; and I am not sure that he is that crazy. Liam has a way of going about his football that just brings in other player into the game, a bit like Robert Flower.

Well Liam has certainly set a high standard at the Club on & off the Field so i don't think your 4 y/o is that silly either.

Give him 2 years and he just might be that Long Term Captain.

How proud would that make Stynesy??

Not surprising to find you agreeing with such utter dribble

Yes, I agree that Aaron shouldn't be captain. I don't like the way he can be easily unsettled under a tight tag or how he can drift in and out of games at times although rarely.

I'd like my leader to be a tough bodied, goal kicking, brave lead by example type ala Neita.

For mine:

CAPT: GREEN

VC: MOLONEY

I admire Aaron and have said that he would make a good captain but I agree that he's a little light in the body. I admired Neitz but thought that a player who spent around 80% of game where the ball wasn't as not ideal captain material for that reason alone. McDonald seemed too much of an all round nice guy. I now believe that a tough nut type midfielder like Moloney may be the guy for the job.

Vice Captain: Aaron Davey (at the very least, elevated to leadership group!)

He's already in the leadership group.

You're not ignorant at all.

Ah. Thought it was McDonald, Bruce, Moloney, Rivers and Miller??? Obviously will be changed around for 2011 with Junior and Miller out.

Confirmation please. Also thought I read in The Hun yesterday that Davey would like to be in leadership group (if not captain).

Perhaps some wise post moderating is in order here?

I think the vast majority of Demonlanders embrace indigenous people and what they bring to the club in terms of their personality, talent and culture. A couple of posts don't reflect this and the authors themselves have expressed a change of heart.

He's in the leadership group, only been mentioned about 100 times this year.

You can take my word for it, or you can believe the Hun, I know who I'd believe.

If you want confirmation, you're on the internet, go to google.com, and type in 'how do you search for something on the internet?'.

Deezman, I agree. You have the balls to say what people are thinking except wouldn't with fear of being called a racist, condecending or offensive.

It has absolutely nothing to do with race, Brad Green will be a better captain SIMPLE.

We had a woman in Queensland a few years ago ( I wont say with balls ) telling us what people are ' thinking '. What i'd like to know is what people and how many of them can read.

Yep, it appears Davey joined the leadership group at the same time as Rivers joined (i.e. start of 2010 year).

Cheers.

Nice work by Davey. Terrible journalism though. Round 2 draw? Collingwood won the round 2 match. How hard is it to look up a fixture?

I agree. i don't want to be told "what I am thinking", because "I" wasn't thinking anything like that. Aaron Davey is a marvellous player. He is consistently the most skillful and classy player in our side. He is the player that I trust most with the ball in his hands. He is the best and most creative playmaker in the team. He doesn't go missing. He is the player that others give the ball to. If he is made captain, I will be very happy. Over the last five years he has kept me going to the footy. Racial stereotypes are misleading and damaging. Have a good think about what you have stirred up Deezman. I hope none of our indigenous players have stumbled on to this crap because it may well make them feel very uncomfortable.

Now this among other posts is also going too far.

I don't condone or agree with DM's first post. It was poorly written and lets hope I'm right here, didn't properly convey his message which was less about slurring a group of people as commenting on a group of people.

This is where the PC hissss starts to annoy me a little. We censor ourselves far too much these days. Just as much segregation and damage to becoming one people world wide is done by the supposed "good deed doers" who attack any form of commentary or debate. Why is it so wrong to express an honest opinion about any group of people so long as it is not hate fuelled? To say that there are not common attributes within most groups of society is naive and to be honest it can be one of the best parts of living in a truly multi cultural society like Australia has. But having a specific set of societal dos and don'ts that are fanatically enforced only exacerbates the problem by widening the divide.

Ask a good friend of mine. A Pakistani ex Muslim living in Germany. He pisses off almost every extremist group world wide with his lifestyle. But as he chews on a pork roll and washes it down with beer, he would no more tell you how to live your life than you would his.

To qualify why I am passionate about it, I am an Ambassador for a wonderful organisation CouchSurfing which is actively reducing bigotry worldwide through regular grassroots cultural exchange every day of the year.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
