BRODIE SMITH

Absolutely love this kid.

One of those players that just looks like he moves so much better than everyone else on the field.

Strong, breaks tackles, keeps his balance like Judd without quite having the same acceleration off the mark.

Good speed and a good tank.

Listed as a mediumm defender on the AFL website, but he's more of a midfielder in my view.

Might be very good in a Corey Enright role at AFL level.

Just a great powerful player who makes things happen.

If he's still available at pick 12, I'd take him in an instant.

Not many would trump him in my view.

(I don't think he'll last till our pick)

I'd like a Mid/Winger/Flanker that's tall like him & wins his own ball, but not with our first pick if we only have one, 1st Rnd pick.

A Tall first, pref CHB, then a Gorringe or then a tall forward.

Somewhere after that, I'd like a rangy type like him that can cover us @ Wing or H/B Flank, to cover us re Strauss, etc.

Best Available ring any bells..?

I think we are in a position that we desperately need to fix the backline,,, Now, so the kid that comes in has time to develop into a mature key player within our timeframe window. (2 years)..

No doubt Watson (CHB), or Cook/Lynch (CHF), or Gorringe would all be right in that bracket equal to one anothers talent,,, or if you will, the Bests available,,,, speculative. IMO in an equal talent basis, we need the spine fixed Now.

we have many that can play those midfield roles now, do we want better mids, yes, but we need that goal to goal line more.

Smith looks a great pickup for any team after an inside-mid. with pace. I'm not sure that's what we need though, esp. with Jack Viney coming through in a couple of years (assuming he signs on)..But who knows?? BP has already pointed him out as a player he likes.

I think we're OK for Key defenders. I mean we've already got Frawley and Garland who have All-Australian potential as key defenders..We've got Warnock, Rivers and Martin who can play as backup KD. Up forward we've got Watts and Jurrah who are enough imo to build a forward line around (although a big, agile, strong contested marking forward would be ideal) they don't come up too often in the 1st round..

I reckon we should obviously take the best available, but i'm assuming there'll be some versatile types who can compliment Frawley/Garland rather than challenge for their spot...

I think its more the 'disposal' coming out of defence that we need to improve, because our defenders are doing a reasonable job of shutting down the opposition. Its generally turnovers that are killing us when we come out of defence..

In regards to needs, I'd have to agree.

Either a strong tall forward like Tom Lynch, or a Heppell or a Smedts for their ball-use coming out of defence.

But I'll be happy as long as BP chooses who he thinks is the best left on the board.

For example, we may already have Frawley, but it couldn't possibly hurt to add a young Brian Lake to our list, rather than add a Jay Neagle or a Jordan McMahon because that's what we think we need.

I don't think Garland is a genuine Key Defender,,,(FB or CHB) but more a 3rd tall defender or medium defender who can take a mobile tall or a small. See josh Gibson.

rivers I see as also struggling with the bigger bodies or the big classy talls, pace & disposal are a concern but a great team player who reads the play well & gets back to chopout.

This is why, I think Riv & Warnock won't cut it as Key Defenders in our Open Window, 2013 +.

If we recruit that Kid this year, he has 3 years to 'arrive' into the side that will be maturing before his developing young eyes. Pick 1 for me!

A tall forward or small/medium pacy attacking back for my 2nd pick!

A good choice if we thought he was our best pick but agree with Deeluded -we have priorities this draft.

Well it seems as though we're playing him as the no. 2 KD, and I think he's doing a fairly good job. Sure he's a tad undersized, but his closing speed and anticipaion make up for it imo..

Height wise he is around the mark for most FB's, though his weight's a bit less.

I like the look Of McCarthy from SA who's about 195cms as a KD, but he probably will be gone at pick 12. I don't think there are any other KD's that are worth a 1st round pick..

I'm guessing we'll go for a more versatile or midfield type, unless there's a really good KPF they rate at pick 12..

I think our KD's is OK, and we can perhaps bring in another in the later rounds. Gotta take best available in round 1, and thats generally not a KD as previous drafts show imo.

I have garland @ 191cms with a slight type of frame. He doesn't look to me as the Ideal build to over fill with muscle. I'd keep him close to where he's at & nice & agile with speed.

Nothing like the frame of the young Frawley.

So I'll differ with you re the way you see our defence in the future. Then one could say, why did we chase Brian Lake last year.

I'll stick to my instincts re the recruiting of a young key Back.

He did a great job on Franklin in 08' when he was on fire. And a couple of others in more recent times that escape me..He does play above his size.

But I see what you're saying. I think we could probably do with developing another key defender, but pretty unlikely with a 1st round pick. Not many KD's go 1st round..I don't think many current gun KD's were 1st round picks (Frawley excluded...)

There'll be opportunity to address this 2nd round onwards...

Anyway, this thread's supposed to be about Brodie Smith lol..

Franklin is the type of player he can play on, matching him for athleticism + enough pace to stay near him. Franklin is noticeably bigger nowadays & I dare say would be a different matchup, note Frawley took him this year.

Garlands ability to play both on talls & smalls is too valuable to waste by bulking him up for the bigger guys. Keep him as he is & recruit a bigger boy with pace & elite kicking to take those others. A lineup of Frawley as the main Full Back with an elite CHB + Garland to take everything in between would be a great defence. Add Grimes + 2 more medium smalls, & were in Big Business. Remember, that the defence is the setup point for good attacks.

*BUMP*

Agree. Smedts is pretty versatile.

Brodie Smith isn't bad either.

Was nearly going to start a thread on this kid, until luckily I ventured to the last page on this forum. Must have missed it back in Sept.

Looks pretty sharp, very quick and effective at stoppages/clearances. Impressive.

Our priority is to pick the best available talent at pick 12.

All the highlights video did was remind me how much I'd like Day, Gorringe, Lycett, Polec and Wingard. I'd take Smith as well. He would break my rule on drafting anyone by the name of Brodie though, so I'd be reluctant at pick 12.

The "Brodie" factor is overruled however, by the name "Smith" which is famous at our club.

His name could be Ms Piggy and you'd forgive after his first goal at the end of the day. I don't know why they can't get this party started earlier. F*cking paperwork. Delistings/promotions should be finalised the day after the GF, Testing and the draft should follow the week after at no consequence to the junior competitions. Sick of waiting.

Posted

Why can't they do that knowing which club they are playing for? This process could be sped up is all I'm saying. The consumers are sick of waiting.

Ok, what about for those whose dreams of playing AFL don't come true??? Years of development and commitment for nothing. I wouldn't want that to happen to me then worry about exams.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
