Nearly every club that has had their back to the wall this year has performed very well the week after. Essendon did it, Carlton did it, Sydney did it, even we did it.

This will by no means be an easy game. Apart from the fact that we need the points on the ladder to make the eight, it is games like this weekend that will provide invaluable experience.

Regardless of their motivation for this game I think we should be thinking firmly about what has happened in Rd 1 the past couple of years.

It is time that Bailey played the RESPECT card and challenges the boys to earn a bit from the Dawks.

....on a side note, it will be interesting to see what trick Kennett pulls out if they get flogged.

Beware the injured Hawk. This Kennett/ Clarkson/ Mitchell jibing may solidify the hawks. Maybe Jeff is using this to motivate the club in there most important game of the year.

The way it was reported on Tassie TV sounds as though it might be a major distraction rather than somethiing that will galvanise them.

Could work in our favour.

Mitchell, Hodge, Sewell, Burgoyne

Hawthorn's style of play is a MUCH more attacking brand of footy compared to Sydney and that's where we found Sydney out. Easily.

Hawthorn's midfield is a lot tougher (especially when Lewis and Franklin are both thrown in there also) and more relentless.

Watch out for the cheap free's to Mitchell also...

Yeah I just watched some of the round 1 game and in the first quarter there were a number of occasions when Melb was not awarded free kicks for holding the ball and while it hardly influenced the result the boys were having a real crack at the start and its those little things that can slow the momentum down when you aren't getting rewarded for effort. But I expect they have learned from that throughout the year and will hopefully keep the pressure and tackling up

I have it on good authority that the Coach and the President do not get on and that Kennett's abrasive style has damaged some relations within the Club. He has overseen a period of turnaround and success but there would many who cant wait until his gone.

Sure, Hawthorn have had their injury concerns, somewhat self inflicted after their 2008 triumph but it must be difficult to reconcile not making finals for a second successive year after winning a flag. Even if they get in this year they will only scrape through. Does that warrant a president being so outspoken and segregating departments, especially FD?

Stynes and the character of him would never allow for such self serving interests.

No one is ever 'lucky' to win a flag. Hawthorn played fantastic footy in 2008 but I feel that after their top 6 players they bottom out quite quickly, not as quick as a St Kilda but their backline for instance is very very weak and is an area we should look to exploit this weekend.

You are generally right. There are a number of things that need to go right in order for a side to win a flag. Form, injuries, tribunal, even events of the day. One of things that you do need is the good fortune that you assists you having better form and less injuries than your opposition. Often they are risk you cant reasonably or foreseeably control (eg freak contact injuries on the field). But you want as few of them as possible if any at all to snare a flag. Good fortune or luck is an ingredient in the mix of success.

Yes, we taught them a lesson.

However, the SCG and clearances can be a winning combination. Especially if the side is up. The Hawks were smashed in the first half and were always going to find it hard to claw back. The Hawks have traditionally also struggled at the SCG - haven't won there since '95.

We just gotta score early-If Hawthorn jump us it will be hard.

Early goals and the Demons can run hard all day.

We need to be on full alert for the sort of off-the-ball first-bounce garbage that Carltank sucked us in with, when experienced players got pinged for retaliating. We should be expecting it & not be surprised by it; see it as a sign of desperation by them & set ourselves to not get sucked in by it.

this game is basically for a spot in the finals...if the hawks lose this game, then they are in grave danager of missing the finals twice in a row since winning the flag....

kennett has obviously worked out that if the hawks lose this game then the 8th spot on the ladder is up for grabs. and judging by his reaction in the media he is worried...

i hope this filters through to the hawks players and they start to second guess themselves on sunday!

... and if they start niggling & sniping at us before the ball is bounced, that's the signal that they're REALLY worried about how to take us on.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval.     With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week.
