That was the original plan, but once the teams started to realise how good the GC17 had it and started to grumble, there was no way they were going to take 2 years of GWS pillaging.

Around mid-late last year the AFL officially changed their stance to only 1 year of a tampered draft for GWS.

Thanks Keyser, that's great news for the rest of the competition

ive got a bad feeling we are going to lose an untouchable to either GC or GWS and then have to use our compensation pick

I read that compensation picks will now not be usable in the two drafts following, which aligns with your thinking, however I believe there is no reason we have to use it immediately thereafter. If your fears came true then we could nominate (eg) 2015 to use that pick.. ?

My gut tells me:

Petterd to GC17

Maric to GWS18

Not to bad, could of been a lot worse!

That's a disaster.

Obviously Grimes, Watts, Scully, Trengove, Frawley are ones that would be an unmitigated disaster... but how is losing Petterd in any way tolerable?

I'll never understand why people on here think he's expendable. We're screaming out for forwards...

No, we're not.

We actually have a good build up of talented forward stocks.

Morton, Jurrah and Petterd to come back. Tapscott is a HFF.

McNamara could play there too.

Miller can't break into the side despite a few BOGs.

Talk about melodrama.

Losing Petterd (even with compensation) would be a disaster?

Surely you jest. I'm not saying I want him to go (far from it) but there's no way that losing him could be considered a disaster, especially considering the list we are building (and have built).

Good call Trident, that's not so bad, as long as it's a really early pick.

Disaster? Honestly?

Honestly. We need all the forwards we can get. Especially a full forward. And Petterd showed he can be that player against Collingwood - he's quick, can take great marks and kick great goals. His determination is also fantastic.

Yes, we are.

Think KP forwards. We have currently on the injured list, Jurrah and Petterd that would be in our 22... That's just 2 players, neither of whom is a KP forward, and our big weakness right now is our forward line. We'd be 5-2 right now if not for the fact we have no real KP forwards. Tapscott? Hasn't played yet and isn't KP. McNamara? You're having a laugh. There's about 6 players who "could" play there.

Compare it to our defence... Frawley, Warnock, Rivers... and Garland as the 4th bloke. That's 3 starters and a backup that are as good as they come (given their ages). Compare our midfield. McDonald, Moloney and Jones. Second string (but not for much longer) Scully, Trengove, McKenzie.... third stringers there;s a huge list of tried and true part timers like Davey, and up and coming talents like Gysberts and Blease. That's a good midfield WITH backups.

Forward line? We have Watts... After that there's a bunch of players that are amazing at playing tall, but that aren't tall.

We're 2 more REALLY good KP forwards from having a complete 22. I'm not saying they have to be Brown/Fev... but at least have the potential. Watts is one, Jurrah is as gifted as they come... And after that?

We ARE screaming out for forwards. Not just names we all like, but players who are not injury prone, who have shown they have the desire AND the gifts. Those last two aspects Ricky has in surplus.

Talk about melodrama.

The compensation would be nothing. Ablett getting 1, or even 2 picks in the 20s, what would Petterd get?

Disaster? Honestly?

I'm not asking you to agree. Not everyone thinks Ricky is required. I believe he is ABSOLUTELY a starting 22 player, and would walk comfortably (given his age) into any 22 in he country, except maybe Geelong's where there's no room around Johnson and Chapman.

Disaster? Absolutely. The kid is an out-and-out gun. He goes ANYWHERE, he'll look a million bucks, and we'll regret it every time we kick less than 15 goals.

Over the next 2-3 years ALL clubs including the MFC will lose some players to the northern states. It's the way the whole system has been set up.

I hope Ricky stays but if he decides to go home-That's that. The MFC must Fight for compensation

You may feel it a tradgedy. Its not. It's business FWIW i think Ricky will stay-but someone(s) will go.

Over the next decade-each year players will come & go. As long as the Core is Tight we will be ok. B)

I have no interest in accepting that the club will lose talented players to the GWS or GC. FFS we have been the laughing stock for that long I think I even started laughing. We have recently collected a most impressive list of players with which to hammer the competition with for the next decade. Great teams don't lose players of the standard of Petterd. He's a player that will throw himself at any contest, has a beautiful set of hands and can kick a clutch goal from 50metres, he's also in our best 22. That makes him a required player and thus the club needs to label him untouchable.

Tell GWS and GC we have a list of players that we will entertain you with the rest our ours so bugger off!

So agreed. The only players that should leave our club are the ones we (the club) decide that are no longer part of the plan. Losing any of our top 30 odd players to the upstart teams would be a massive kick in the guts.

I think you have a point.

Losing Petterd would be a bit like Geelong losing Rooke or Wojcinski... or Moloney.

Not even close to the same situation. Geelong chose to give up Moloney because they felt that Ottens was a necessary part of their premiership side while Moloney was not. Also they acknowledged that to get a quality player thay had to be willing to give up quality and did so.

GC and GWS are not giving up a damned thing for the players, nor are their clubs getting a say in whether or not they leave. Further, no club is going to receive fair compensation for the players taken in this manner. The secret formula (which is still being tweaked as we speak) is a farce to allow the AFL to pretend that they are not stacking the deck to a ridiculous degree in favour of the new teams at the expense of every other club.

Give it another 18 years, there'll be Matthew Jack Green coming into the list.

I swear, the middle name must have been picked just to make sure the kid became a Demon.

Looking forward to seeing James Jack Neitz, Harry Jack McDonald, David Jack Whelan, and in particular Jack Jack Robertson.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
