And now Alex Silvagni

I know I've been banging on that our list management is poor and resulted in our recruiting staff missing opportunities to take some rookies in 2009.

How come Freemantle managed to recruit Barlow from Werribee & he gets 33 possies plus they get Alex Silvagni from under our nose at Casey. He had 14 poseessions and 7 marks in his first game.

Did our blokes just sit back & bludge because they had 4 picks in the top 20 ???

How many defenders do you want on the list? Silvagni is a tall reasonably athletic backman, we have a couple of those, Garland will be back soon as he is ten times better than Silvagni

Strange that 15 clubs didn't take Barlow if he is such a gun, he is now noticed, let's see in the next couple of weeks how he handles a hard tag, if he gets 33 possies in that situation then I will say he is a good player.

Our list is getting better and better, hey we could have traded for Josh Gibson we needed a leader for the boozy nights out.

sigh

Settle down. Alex is a great bloke and an ok footballer. He is a just senior player who will do a servicable job. We haven't 'lost' anything.

Yes, that's exactly what they did

It really irritates me when people just assume when players slip through the net it's because the recruiting team aren't doing their job. You've got no idea.

We can't actually draft EVERYONE. Of course there will be players out there that are better than the ones we draft, and SHOCK! Some of them will even have been picked later in the draft than our guys!!

Actually, our football department convinced the AFL that we should have two extra spots on our rookie list for just this eventuality, then decided not to use them. Really.

Or we could let reality intrude again and say that there are only so many spots on the list and we had already made a commitment to take Meesen and Newton as our two rookies (two rookies as in that's all the spots we had left). I'm sure that had we had room on our rookie list these two players would have been looked at closely, but as it was there was simply no spot to give them.

How come all 16 clubs (including Freo) overlooked Barlow in the national draft?

As for Silvagni do we really need more backmen?

taking this one step further.

The argument here is not Silvagni and Barlow instead of Meesen and Newton. The argument is Gawn and Fitzpatrick instead of Silvagni and Barlow. I would prefer we punt on 2 potential ruck/forwards than another backmen and midefielder.

Pushing two contracted players to the rookie list to make way for actual earlier picks if anything is great list management.

Were Barlow and Silvagni even in the national draft?

As for not taking Gawn and Fitzpatrick, I see that as nothing short of lunacy. We were set to take them with 18 and 34 if available. The fact that they both slipped through at the numbers we got them if nothing short of a miracle.

What a mob of yes men & apologists we've got.

The rookie draft has been a gold mine for us in the past & the 2009 rookie draft was a pearler.

Our list management people mucked things up so that we had no room to recruit any rookies.

Other clubs are laughing all the way to the bank while we watch donkeys like Hughes, healey, Meesen, Newton & Bell run around. Oh sorry I forgot Hughes is gonna be a champion.

No wonder we are looking at 3 straight wooden spoons.

You sound like the same posters who insisted we sign DB up for another year.

You lost me here.

I don't think it's the recruiters that are asleep.......

The rookie list has been great to us in previous years, will be good to us this year, and will be good to us in years to come. Amazingly enough, we won't be the only clubs who unearth good role players, and even some above average players this way. Conversely, every single club has blokes who won't make it on their rookie lists and this will apply to us too.

You clearly have absolutely no concept of how list management truly works, but rather than try to give you some insight as I am but a mere rank & file supporter myself, I will recommend that you watch Cam Schwab's Whiteboard Wednesday tomorrow as he will be discussing List Management. Hopefully a brief tutorial from a professional will give you some perspective of the realities.

Remember, we are the same club that took Watts ahead of Naitanui.

We are a bunch of amateurs.

I'll bookmark this. I'll have to increase the hard drive memory soon. Your incorrect predictions I've stored have taken it's toll.

NikNat is overrated. He had a whole 11 possessions on the weekend, yet was still somehow named in their best. Imagine if he makes it to 15 or so, he'll be in with a shot at the brownlow! I'm still happy with Watts.

Certainly we can't draft everyone, but other clubs appear to be making more prudent selections than us. Player development is also not a strong point......neither is coaching......finances........facilities......etc.

You cant be in the rookie and not be in the National.

You have got my point exactly regarding Gawn and Fitz.

Nobody knows that, only time will tell. And if you actually somehow do know for a fact, then you'd better call the club and let them know you should be in charge of our recruitment.

His old coach at Werribee openly admitted in the news that Barlow will get 30 touches, 10 of them will be kicks and half of those won't hit the mark, and you deal with.

This has been the knock on him. Maybe Freo can hide his deficiencies, much as Carlton will be able to somewhat compensate for Brock's.

Either way, we can't and won't.

... otherwise Valenti would be starting in the middle against the pies.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
