Prob cas they still fall in behind Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, (for me personally Western bulldogs)

Probably because on all occasions they generally beat us...

Usually a rivalry means that both teams don't like each other. Can't see any reason why Hawthorn would have such feelings towards us.

I reckon the lack of hostility probably comes down to the fact that due to Don Scott, we're still the Melbourne Demons. They didn't try to merge with us, we tried to take over them. I don't reckon we had a rivalry with them, they probably have an excuse to have a rivalry with us.

I reckon the 80s, with the Stynes final probably had as much reason to cause a rivalry as anything.

i hate them. but there is no rivalry because their supporters dont care about it unless they are 125 points up.....

Go to a Melbourne v Hawthorn game at the G (especially in the members section) and it's the eastern suburbs at play (or if you like the bourgeoisie at play).

The supporters haven't taken up any rivalry because they all know each other from "Grammar" or "College" or where ever (and the same goes for many of the players out on the field)!!!!!

And frankly - how could you hate Buddy Franklin - no way : as a kid he wore a Dee's jumper with a big 3 on the back. Fev the rotten ***t, now he's easy to loath!

I hate them, I hate them because they are the club I wish we were (for the last 30 years). Ruthless, dominant, constant winners, so called family club, record members (even if half of them are dogs, cats and Tassie members). Everything we and the likes of Jim, Cam, Chris and Dean are striving for for the next 2 generations!

The negotiations advanced considerably, and settled on a number of key aspects of the proposed team. Speculation Key points agreed upon during negotiations prior to the official announcement included that:

The new team's name would be "Melbourne" and would use Hawthorn's "Hawks" nickname

1990 Round 22 & subsequent Elimination Final were very tough hard affairs. I have the Full EF on Tape

Personally I'm more inclined to despise Carlton and Collingwood. I'd be happy to have an epic rivalry with either of these.

Back in those days most of the traditional rivalry,s were players not teams

Melbourne has always had a Collingwood rivalry although the media have a different opinion based on just one game

I would have thought that the Hawks main rivals are still Essendon , Carlton , and Geelong

I would have thought Geelong, Collingwood and essendon.

Collingwood is a traditional rival, but only seems relevant on queens birthday games.

Essendon more recently with them beating us in 2000 grand final and that elimination final where Hille destroyed Nicholson.

Geelong is who we got paired with in rivaly rounds in recent years because we were both there at the begining.

Unfortunaly none of these rivalrys are fierce eg. Essendon vs Hawthorn or Collingwood

vs Carlton.

John Kennedy Sr loathed us passionately because when he was a player we handed out massive floggings to them. So much so that when they won the '61 flag, ending our run, he had his players sing 'Grand Old Flag" as a funeral dirge.

Great rivalries are forged in finals. Our biggest finals competitors have been Collingwood (no s-t!) and Essendon.

The great rivalries are all finals related.

our era from 1926 to 1964 looks a lot like Hawthorn 1971-2008. For most of it, when we were great they were rubbish, and the reverse applies.

I hate them deeply for 1987 and 1988. (But Gippy was wrong on a second point. We had some revenge in 1990 when they were looking for three flags in a row, we beat them twice in two weeks to put them out of the finals. The shame is we did not go on with it.)

I also despise their supporters for their arrogance, and loathe their colours which are simply disgusting. Their president is a [censored] as well, but he does not upset me as much as that prat Crawford, or the sniper Osborne who is the latest in a long line of Hawthorn hit men.

I can't help but admire them for that. Don't like them for a second, but have to admire their achievements, and hope like hell that we can start to emulate them in the not too distant future.
