Just on the "beep test" that kicked off training. Apparently, it's a slight variation on what we know as the beep test and it's called "the yoyo test". This is from Nathan Jones' Twitter from yesterday -

Solid day of training ... Testing this morning the yoyo test!!! Scully took the honours by a level over Morton and me with young Trengrove not far behind ... Some promising results all the boys are fit.

Not so long ago such a test would have been won by Cam Bruce with daylight second. Goes to show we're going to have some fit boys going through the midfield from now on.

When one thinks that Scully acheived this result having just completed his first full week of this pre season after recupperating from injury shows just what an incredible athlete he is. And not far away is Trengove.Both will be just sensational footballers for the RED and the BLUE.

And today's 2km time trial results....

2k time trial was tough this morning backing it after a solid week morto took the honors by a sec over me and scully ... Plenty of PB's all around the boys are in great shape... Testing week over let the games begin !!!

I think it was mentioned that Bruce wasn't at training. I'm sure he would still be up there with the best.

Not having seen the incident it's hard to judge but a 19 year old shaking his head in disagreement at a coach that is trying to coach you is not on and is cause for minor concern.

Pffft! Plenty of people shake their heads on the training track. I've done it and no doubt you've done it. What matters is how he reacted next. If he dropped his head then we've got a problem but if he put his head down and muttered "I'll show you you @#$%" and went harder at the ball then I won't think twice about it.

It looks like a beep test with a 5m walk at the end to replicate repeated sprints in soccer.

Thanks BD for the report on Jack and Kelly O'donnell. On one hand you could criticise Jack for showing dissent. However he may just be standing up for himself - showing everyone he has some self confidence. Remember the spray given by James Hird to Sheedy's coaches bench one time during a game?

There's a good program on Ch One friday nights 10.30 called 'America's game'. Last week they interviewed star quarterback Payton Manning - perhaps the best current player. They miked him up during their winning super bowl year in 2005. He gives it to his fellow team mates and staff 'ALL THE TIME' And he copps it too. He said it's ok as long as the purpose is to make you the best athlete you can possibly be.

First, agree with all the remarks about the players looking fantastically prepared. Nathan Jones' remarks about "plenty of PBs out there" is great to hear.

Second, sounds like the Jack Watts thing was O'Donnell just making an important observation about trying to avoid getting caught flat-footed in a tackle, which by Jack's reaction he must have mistaken to be criticism rather than damn good advice. The most important aspects of this incident are:

(1) I'll bet that this is advice that Jack will now remember for his whole career.

(2) If it prevents him getting a serious knee or ankle injury in a tackle, it's been more than worth this minor misunderstanding.

Have the occassional chat to Brad Gotch and he thinks that Watts should be in the VFL for the first three months of the year as he is just not ready in the body or upstairs to play AFL.

Hate to write it as much as you guys must to read it but that's the situation.

He does have high standards though, and Jack will blow up a few times at Brad - he's an honest talker is Brad...

It's not surprising that Watts is expected to spend 3 months in the VFL. He's basically a first year player who's tall and skinny. Plenty more to be done before he starts tearing games apart. 2012 onwards will see his best.

Have the occassional chat to Brad Gotch and he thinks that Watts should be in the VFL for the first three months of the year as he is just not ready in the body or upstairs to play AFL.

I'm happy to hear this - I still don't think he looks ready for AFL and I think the mind aspect is more salient than the physical.

I think a game or 2 here and there might help his feel for the AFL game, but not playing week in week out.

It's like Scott West said 2 weeks ago when talking about the young draftees:

When it all boils down we've got to look after their best interests.

Their best interests will be in the best interests of the team.

If the players aren't ready to perform a role for the team, then playing is not helping their development.

I don't think Watts is near this stage yet.

I get more annoyed that a person can not discuss Jack Watts in this forum unless it is in glowing terms about how he is the second coming. I hope he ends up a great player but it will take time.

Fact is despite his No 1 draft pick status he is still a 19 year old kid who probably needs to grow up a little bit physically and mentally in a disciplined envronment with high expectations. Not really a surprise.

I remember reading an article written by Dermie Pre 2008 draft about Watts. His outlook on Watts was that whoever picked him up should not expect any significant output for 3 years.

Poor bloke. 18, just finished school, chucked in the deep end in a professional sport during that school time (debuting day before an exam) and then has this kind of analysis in the off-season! gotta feel for him. But honestly, can't wait for that '2012 Watts' everyone keeps talking about. I wasn't watching draft at all when Watts got drafted, so have no idea how he went in junior footy, so am fully relying on the reports of others, and their big hopes in him to have a half idea what to expect.

Why feel for him?

He's not ready and people are saying only that. Timely reality check for the supporters, if anything.

He'll come good in time, but it will take just that.

Way too much has been made of this issue already. But there's such a huge contrast between those who saw what happened and say it's nothing, and those who didn't see it but have implied from it that:

* it gives an insight into his whole mindset, including his "commitment issues" (this one's yours - do you really think he's not fully committed to MFC, just on the basis of this incident?)

* unless he gets a spray, he can't get himself going

* he thinks his talent means he doesn't need to put in the necessary hard work

* he won't cope with a coach who's got high standards and is an honest talker

* his mind is less AFL-ready than his body

* he's not prepared to perform a role for the team.

If this was the latest in a string of such incidents, then all these comments would be justified, and I'll be first in line to kick his a#@e. But this seems by all accounts to have been the only time anything like this has happened, and it's completely at odds with just about everything else that's been reported about Jack's character. Yes, he did something wrong, it was extremely well-handled by O'Donnell, and the lesson will by now be seared permanently into Jack's brain. Criticise him by all means for what he's actually done, but if you want to take it so far beyond what actually happened, you're just as guilty of over-reaction as the "Jack-the-messiah" crowd.

Brad's entitled to his opinion. I've got much respect for him as a coach. And quote him by all means.

But it's all your own work to imply that because Brad has "high standards" and is "an honest talker", it means that "Jack will blow up a few times" at him.

Does Jack have a history of blowing up at coaches at MFC? Or is Brad the only coach at MFC with high standards and speaks honestly? Or does Brad know something about Jack that the rest of us don't?

Such an over-reaction to a single incident, which all those who actually saw it say is nothing.

I used to think you were a decent poster. You have paraphrased a whole heap of that you thought you read.....but in truth were never written!!!!!!!!!!

Still searching for the over-reaction to the incident still can find nothing. Just a few posters echoing the minor concerns that our coaching staff actually have/had.

In bold you can see where you are now purporting to know what is going on in Jack's head after you have wrongly accused others of doing the same thing!!!

You have put quotation marks on "committment issues". Now thats just BS because I never used those words in isolation. Quote the whole sentence, don't misrepresent what I said. Taking things out of context to support your imaginary crusade is dishonest.

Methinks that the over-reaction is all in your head and you are hyper-sensitive where young Jack is concerned. Ironically it is you who is making this issue far bigger than it should be by spewing forth opinions that are coming from the voices in your head.

I try not to give out a serve around here unless someone is being outright sneaky and dishonest. We all have opinions but I think you have crossed the line. End rant...moving on.

It's good to hear Garland is starting to do some ball work. Looking forward to seeing him grace the paddock again soon. Has anyone heard when his return is likely. Will he play NAB cup?
