So im sitting here wondering what is the difference between a dream and a reality. So i composed two ladders. One which i would consider a perfect season and a ladder which is alot more realistic for 2010. What are your ideal / predicted ladders?

Below is my 2010 Perfect Ideal Heavenly Ladder

Melbourne

Brisbane (always liked brisbane)

Western Bulldogs

Port Adelaide

Fremantle

Richmond

North

West Coast

Carlton (Just missing out on the 8)

Sydney

Gellong

Adelaide

Essendon

Hawks

Collingwood

St Kilda

Below is my 2010 Predicted Ladder

Gellong

Westen Bulldogs

Collingwood

St Kilda

Hawks

Adelaide

Essendon

Brisbane

Carlton

Melbourne

Sydney

1-4: Dogs, Pies, Saints, Cats:

Boring I know, but each of the first 3 have made definitive immediate improvements to their lists and the Cats are just sooo good.

Any one of them can win the flag

5-7: Crows, Hawks, Lions

Can't win the flag but wont miss the 8

8-9: Blues, Eagles

They'll be fighting out the last place in the 8

10-16: the rest

Any could finish bottom 4 and none can make the 8 but it's impossible for me to put them in order

Bookmark it! It's guaranteed to be wrong somehow.

No offense guys but I think most of you are crazy. As a fellow demons supporter it saddens me to say this but I think we will be pushing it to get out of the bottom 4 this year, we will start moving faster up the ladder the folling year but I dont think there will be massive improvement as in win this coming year.

SORRY

Teams can rise and fall pretty quickly.

In 2007 before the season began MFC were predicted by the majority of the 'experts' to finish as the top team from Victoria, after we had knocked a decent St Kilda team out of the finals in 2006.

We finished that season 3rd last.

Conversely, Geelong had a miserable 2006 season and some were predicting they were ready for a rebuild. Thompson almost lost his job at the end of 2006.

They started the first 5 games of 2007 in poor form... then went on a run of wins over the course of 3 years that has never before been seen in AFL history.

Essendon in 1993 came from nowhere with a group full of kids to win the flag.

We won't do this, but doing better than bottom 4 is hardly impossible, in fact I think it is highly probable.

True, although there are a lot more examples of teams that have finished bottom and taken several years to improve.

I think we'll win more games than most people predict, although I don't think we'll be in finals contention.

Whilst I'd love to see us playing finals, it's not the objective of this year. I'd prefer to see us get some game time into the kids, stay injury free and use this season to build towards a big success in the next few years.

We finished that season 3rd last.

I think this anecdote is more of an indictment on 'the experts' than it is on the ability to predict a team's fortunes. The 2007 'expert' predictions you refer to were lazy predictions. I thought it was pretty clear we were on the decline.

You only needed to look at the age of our more important players to realise that they - and thus us - were likely to be on the wane. Our list's 'age gap' meant we were relying on inexperienced players to step up.

However, the injury toll and upheaval worsened the slide - on paper we weren't as bad as our '07 results reflected. (Going so badly in '07 helped the rebuild, so I'm not complaining).

We won't do this, but doing better than bottom 4 is hardly impossible, in fact I think it is highly probable.

I think it's highly probable we'll avoid the spoon, while getting out of the bottom four is even-money at best.

I will be conservative and say anywhere between 11th-14th, which is not that much different (ie bottom 6).

Don't underestimate momentum though, things can turn quickly, whether a side goes up or down for that matter. There is plenty of evidence to suggest this too.

Confidence is a massive issue with a young side.

Young teams can perform really well when they have a bit of confidence, but as soon as they lose a few big matches, the form drops away dramatically.

I think our side in 2009 was inconsistent, but the form after the dives off Port melb peir turned and they finished off well i thought.

Many opinions might suggest they wouldn't be surprised if there was a drop off in form towards end of season because of young bodies, whatever. But believe if the FD prepare well and play guys on form, they can arrest these form drop-offs.

We finished last in 1997, then made a prelim the following year?!

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
