Paul Wheatley – A fantastic clubman, Paul had a disappointing year with injury. He had a great pre-season but broke down on the eve of the season with soft-tissue injuries. It was pleasing he was able to play in the final round because he is a really popular figure at the club, along with Matty Whelan, and deserved that. Although he didn't play a lot of football, he didn't drop his bundle. He also spent a lot of time with our young defenders. Unfortunately, his injuries brought a premature end to his career at Melbourne – Sean Wellman on Melbournefc.com.au

An unfortunate time for him to be the age he is, at the club he was. At his best he was a very handy runner off the half-back flank. Was one of our better players last season ('08). Well done Wheats.

Why wouldn't he have a punt at making the NFL? He was kicking it 80 metres two months ago...

A great clubman, and enjoyed watching his journey over the years, came good late in his career. Thanks for your services Paul, hope to see you around the club in future years

Age and injury robbed Paul of a place on our list for 2010. 2008 was probably his best year, but sadly he couldn't get onto the park in 2009 and that effectively ended his career. Tough business this AFL! He is an absolute gentleman to boot, and I'll certainly miss him in the red and blue. Good luck Paul, in whatever you do!

Despite the scoreboard, I thought his last game was really enjoyable under the circumstances. The signature 'supergoal' was a nice touch, and I'm pretty sure those two roosts in to the middle of the ground were purely for kicks (no pun intended).

Never really reached the heights we may have liked, but will be remembered as a serviceable player at the MFC.

After more of a free reign in 2008, this season was certainly a disappointing way for Wheatley to finish his career.

However, I guess that's footy - and life. The wheel turns...

Agreed. I have no doubt he enjoyed those long kicks up the middle, and the way almost the entire team mobbed him after his 'signature' goal was nice.

Indeed. Those roosts were good auditions for the NFL, don't you think ? :D

He certainly got onto them.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
