Departures and re-signings

I noted in todays Herald Hun, that the vox pop, asking the non participating coaches for their tips as to who they think will win the GF. Dean Bailey is listed as being "overseas".

With the departure of Brock, is it just coincidence that this occurred while DB was away?

Also, I have heard a whisper from a reliable source, that Flash has re-signed with the Dees. If this is true, I hope the club announces it soon. This will dampen the embers of Brock's departure. Let's hope we hear something soon from the club on this one.

Its hardly a coincidence that Bailey goes away on holiday after the conclusion of the season when the players are also away.

And its not a coincidence that trade week and the draft occur shortly after the completion of the finals, when he & the players are likely to be away.

But i think its a stretch to suggest the club has somehow made designs for Bailey to be overseas during this episode, for whatever reasons you may be alluding to...

The trading and list management strategies would've been formed throughout the course of this season and previous to this, in consultation with him.

None of these decisions are made on a whim.

And finally, these decisions, whilst Bailey has some input, are not his to make.

I'm sure there would've been a few international phone calls, but in the end this is down to Tim Harrington doing what he is paid to do.

Sorry for asking the question on a forum. I am not suggesting this was done by design, by the club. It was more a question about Brock's timing of the announcement. My understanding is that the expectation of the club last Monday was that he was coming in to sign the contract. They were shocked at what he (or should I say his manager) actually told them.

What about Flash?

Why are you sorry?

Just giving my reasons for why I think there are no designs on any of this.

Did Brock have a choice in the timing of the announcement? The decision of when to announce it involved the club too.

I don't think there's much in this at all.

It may just say something about the nature of the relationship the player concerned had with the coach. At the end of the day, it is the Coach that carries the can for morale of his players.

Like I said, my mail is the club had the expectation that Brock was coming to the meeting to sign a contract and were shocked at what transpired

The Australian said he agreed to a 3 year deal.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story...5012432,00.html

The Demons ended a dispute over the length of an initial contract offer to Davey, who was coming out of contract next month, by agreeing to a new three-year deal. Melbourne had previously offered Davey a two-year contract, which was unacceptable to the player.

Oh yeah, I understand. I took that as read anyway. Its been put forward a few times already that Brock was unhappy with Bailey and is a factor for him leaving.

I honestly think Bailey has been coaching the team to develop and to be assessed this season, rather than purely coaching to win.

Or at least, winning was not the highest priority, even if it was one.

I agree with this.

But I guess, it never occurred to me that this might not sit well with some of the players.

I can understand Brock not being happy with a negating role or being played in positions he felt uncomfortable, but i think this has also shown me a side of him I didn't realise was there.

I thought he'd be happy to fill whatever role was asked of him by the coach. Obviously not.

I can understand frustration if he was having no succes in a foreign role, but I guess I would've also expected him to be able to accomplish the task set for him.

I think it has just highlighted deficiencies in his game and made it easier to let go.

Even Ross Lyon & Mark Thompson would have some players that would find it hard to like them.

Its the nature of being a coach. I'm not worried in the slightest.

I'm not saying that it never happens and usually it's the go home factor when it does, but coaches very rarely lose players they want to keep.

I tend to agree...if Bails has a wiff and was determiend to retain Brocks services then he'd be here. Obviously it wasnt all as happy camping at the Junction Oval as we may have thought..lol.

Someone in that midfield had to go.. Brock drew that straw

Exactly.

The 'honesty session' (where Bailey said McLean would play a periphery role), the salary decrease, and the quickness of the deal being done with Carlton, all lead to the conclusion that the MFC were exploring their options with regard to retaining McLean.

Agree, the deal happened far too quickly for it not to have been considered. Brock wanting out may have come as a surprise, but it was a surprise that had been planned for, if that makes sense. Responsible list management at its best.

I for one am immensely impressed and comforted to know that the club is not only proactive with respect to its destiny but that we no longer see our selves as poor reactionaries.

Playing off the front foot... well done chaps !!

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
