Pick #2 for Sandilands?

Spoke to a bloke at a function tonight and he said that the Pies and us were the leading contenders for Sandilands. He also said that Melbourne would not give up pick 2 for him. This bloke has managed players in the past.

Not sure if I would have a 27 year old ruckman as a priority for our list given where it is at.

Perhaps, we're simply sniffing out all our options, so we don't overlook anything. That is understandably sensible. Any well run club would do the same.

someone of his age is not quite what we need but if he is a bargin for us then why not. Could get 5 very good years out of him.

If melbourne picked up Sandilands...it would allow us to make room for other players...we could get rid of all/some of Meesen, PJ and Spencer....and probably keep Jamar. What do people think of that? It's just another way to look at things...but we would still need a premiership ruckman at some stage..

No. Spencer was extremely promising yesterday and Jamar continued his good form. I want youth only being drafted, unless a gun recruit (ala Hodge, Selwood or Buddy) is available. Sandilands is a log.

I can agree that these two can possibley be our rucks going forward, but how did Spencer show promise yesterday?

He battled. Saw him kicking the ball whilst the players were in the huddle. It's fair to say he can improve on his kicking from here on in.

Big no for the Sandilands/#2 trade, we are likely to get 10-15 years out of the number 2 pick compared to 4-6 out of Sandilands. There is no time-frame that is a certainty of us playing finals, so taking a gamble on a 27 year old just isn't worth the risk.

Most young ruckmen need to work on their kicking I suppose. But we can just give Spencer a rap for 'battling' or having a go. We should expect all our players to be competative, it should be at the very least what every player does every game.

He hardly touched the ball and did OK in the taps. He is still very young and has the potential for massive improvement. Personaly he has not shown much.

I would like to see Maybe one big strong mark? or getting over 10 touches or even a goal would be good.

He is 19, raw and a 2nd year rookie and needs considerable development. Your undersell what he has done this year. He is a far more capable player than I saw against the Swans in the pre season. FWIW, I think he does show hope for the future in the way he rucks and effort to compete for the contest.

As I said he has the potential for massive improvement and could be a part of our ruck combo going forward. I was saying his perfomance yesterday was nothing promising and IMO has not shown much. For a young raw player maybe I am expecting to much, does not change the fact he has not even taken a decent strong mark, kicked a goal or even get get a decent amount of the ball. I'm sure he has come along way though from where he was, Precious Jake

Some of his tap work was fantastic. He moved around the ground well, it was only his disposal by foot that was the issue yesterday. There's no doubt he's still very raw, but that's part of the story with a project player, such as Spence.

No thanx, I'd rather keep the Russian, crash bang marking, goal kicking ruckman.

Just add one hard running skillfull type ruck, hang on, could Meese do that I wonder.

I think we're on track, seems like the plannings been done well.

So we have in form - Jamar, (25yr 11mth).

In developement - Meeson (mobile/23yr 2mth). Spencer (crash bang hit-out orientated/19yr 10mth).

PJ (25yr 2mth).

IMO, we need to rookie another mobile follower type with good skills & running ability (17Yr old).

Right on the money. For a 19 yo to be able to hold his own in the ruck makes it at least worth promoting and perservering with him. On topic: Sandilands - No way. He is not worth pick#2. Never has been and never will.

So you are basing it on one game or a season?

If its a season then you have glzed over alot. He is still learning the caper but he does contest the ruck knockouts, he does throw his body around to clear space the midfielders. He is far more agile at this stage then the start of the year and can actually size up a pass which he could not do at the start of the year. And your criteria for rating him is misplaced and you would do well to watch him closely. At this stage he is no Kreuzer but is definitely worth tracking. And I am sure had he kicked one goal you would be raving over him.

A lot of this depends on whether the Russian is actually on the move or not. If Jamar does go then Sandilands for 18 or similar to provide competitve rucking and feed Scully and Co whilst other rucking protoges come along might have some merit.

Why ? Not necessaily as youre picking for football proess not leadership potential per se.. It may well happen that way but I wouldnt want to narrow my vision to that parameter.

A first round pick should ideally be a player who is a 10 year 200+ gamer that is critical cog in any premiership push. Hopefully leadership is there as a bonus but not every first rounder is captaincy material.

Let's be honest he would NOT get a gig in any other team, although you could say that for a lot of our players. It's not unfair to say he is not afl standard atm. I am not having a go at this kid at all, just saying it how it is. He has a long way to go with a lot of aspects in his game and I hope he takes big steps forward next year. Our lack of quality rucks helps Jake's cause and people seem to have their hopes placed in him as do I. I just think we should expect a little more as for the past 3 years our standards have definitely dropped for good reason though. This is not a player bash but just an opinion, to many people follow suit around here and an opinion which is not the norm is blasphemy. Good one RR,
