Forumulated Opinions

Forumulated Opinions is a term I've come up with to describe opinions that posters come to based on what others have written. It often leads to a vicious cycle whereby these so-called opinions quickly become accepted as fact as more and more posters repeat them.

Here are a few examples:

- Valenti is really slow

- Valenti is a bad kick

- Melbourne need a Ryan O'Keefe type player

- Melbourne need a player who bleeds red and blue

Feel free to add your own.

EDIT: Highlighted key point

It doesn't help when some posters, and moderators, shove these 'facts' down your throats.

I've spent half my positive player posts defending this year the bloke who will have the most goals and most assists, and been one of the hardest workers all year.

But I have felt compelled to do so because of posters taking the sh!te dished up by other posters as gospel and repeating their nonsense.

Too many bullies on this site feel compelled to offer a derogatory remark about the intelligence of the posters that dare to disagree with them.

Don't hold back, add it to the list.

That would be things like:

- Morton is too soft

- Bartram can't kick

- Newton does nothing but try to take showy marks

- Robbo does nothing but try to take showy marks.

- The team desperately needs another power forward to be competitive.

- The team desperately needs more midfielders to be competitive.

- The team desperately needs a dominant ruckman to be competitive.

- Jones is just too slow.

- McClean is just too slow.

- Moloney is just too slow.

- Buckley always kicks long and blind.

That the sort of thing you were after? :P

That's it.

Although I do agree with some of those points, however that is not the point.

- 'Melbourne needs a power forward to be competitive' line is a popular one.

- 'MFC's list is not big enough for Jones, Brock AND Moloney'

- MFC needs some 'star' players

But Robbo is lazy and selfish. (... wait. Did I just do what you were talking about..?)

Let me just clarify for those who have trouble understanding.

Forumulated Opinions refers to those opinions that seem to just flow from what others read, without much substance or backing by the person giving the opinion. It doesn't just refer to opinions that you have that others don't agree with.

It is healthy to challenge your own assumptions, only idiots stick to an argument they have clearly lost on the facts.

Defend your point of view, but realise when you are wrong.

Bailey did with Garland (so did I) and we have got a 200 game player on our hands.

And again with Frawley this year.

Some need to with Bate who has been easily the best forward and the one the opposition has put the most work into. That will change with Watts and Jurrah and that will make Bate even more dangerous.

Great thread CB. Anything that makes people think inwardly can only be a good thing.

And we do that as a group. Facts floating around brought up from time to time (some now defunct) that are never backed up with evidence because they are just accepted as fact. And I put my hand up on a few myself.

CAC is an awful recruiter.

BB is an awful fitness pro.

Garland is a dud. Hand up.

Frawley is a dud. Hand up.

Bailey has no gameplan.

The previous board didn't care about the club.

So basically you are saying to think for yourself and be prepared to back up your opinions with logic otherwise you will be cut to shreds.

Isn't that what an internet forum is about?

I think the biggest problem is with people who have strong opinions but are unable/unwilling to back them up with logic, especially when they then cry about their right to an opinion whenever someone challenges their opinion with logical reasoning and facts.

Posted

BTW, there is some real rubbish on this thread. It seems that this is a spot where people feel they can list their own misguided opinions without fear for being questioned.

Funnily enough, it is what you are saying you are trying to stop. And your opening post possibly the most hypocritical of the lot, Clint.

I think the problem is the people who firmly believe that they are on the side of logic and reason but are in reality repeating the "Formulated opinions" as CB has termed them and using them as the basis for their logical and reasonable arguments.

I think you have missed the point here. What people are putting up are examples of rubbish theories that have been preached as gospel with little or no factual basis on these boards. Therefore your statement "there is some real rubbish on this thread" is merely validating the topic.

Read carefully before you post.

That is one formulated assumption I believe in firmly...

And the reason they become gospel is because people keep blindly repeating them.

That along with "Bruce is a hack" are the two funniest comments I've read on this site.

How about Melbourne have no forward line structure.

It's like a plague. There are people who are addicted to causing an altercation on here. Some posters ONLY come on here to disagree, never to make their own points, or, God forbid, support the MFC in any way shape or form.

- Morton is too soft

Some of those are true though... :)

-players that are 192cm are no good

Never heard it... :)

The Bruce garbage is the best example of this there is. One particularly noisy empty drum comes on, posts a WHOLE lot of trash talk, and then the weak-minded sensationalists read the overwhelming amount of posts on the topic, and feel the need to agree. Not because of the facts presented, but because of how emotive, funny, interesting or otherwise entertaining the post may be. Meanwhile, the player in question has done nothing wrong, or different from how they've always played the game... racking up a couple of hundred starts while at it.

It's masturbation, designed chiefly to expand one posters agenda against a player, which is 100% unjustified (even if he DID sleep with his sister). And the worst part is, because they're experienced in forums and know how to grab the attention of the great unwashed, the agenda gathers momentum until it's blown out of proportion.

What's funny about it is that Bruce's detractors have been made fools of time and time again. They keep taking swings at him, and he keeps playing good footy, and his many supporters keep putting the critics in their place. Shows how good he is, after a fashion.

Brad Green is/was/has ever been soft.

My personal favourites:

- Bailey has not changed the club's gameplan

- Bailey has NO gameplan

- Melbourne would kick more goals if we always had forwards in the forward line

- Matthew Bate is lazy

- Brock McLean is a poor kick

- Craig Cameron was a poor recruiter

Unlike others, I'll confirm that I wholeheartedly disagree with all these assertions. Good thread, and not a little irony contained within.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
