Some home truths

Time for some home truths about some real battlers.

Russell Robertson - is well and truly finished. There was talk on the commentary if he should get another contract next year. I can only assume they were kidding. Spends more time lying on the ground with fake injuries than running around getting a kick.

Cameron Bruce - a laughable effort today in his 200th. Classic dinky hand passes putting team mates under pressure, constant fumbles, running from contests. It was all there on display today. Who was the genius that gave him a 3 year deal? Untradeble as no other team will touch him.

Brock McLean - his career is going backwards at a rapid rate. Can not handle a tag. Time for the coaching staff to give him an ultimatum. Shape up or ship out. Completely out of the running for next skipper, thats for sure.

James McDonald - has given plenty to the MFC over the years, and has put his body on the line time and time again. But the game has passed him well and truly. I suspect he knows this, and will hang up the boots at years end.

A bit harsh on Robbo. I think he'd be better off to retire at the end of the year than try to play on, but he's still been a better goalscoring option than Miller or Newton this year.

McLean I'm willing to give a little time to. He's been great in the last few weeks. Today he was awful, but overall his form has improved as the season progressed. See how he does next year if he can have an injury-free pre-season.

Spot on with the other two though.

I don't like such out-and-out player criticism. I even stuck up for Robbo last week. But this can't be disputed.

The only thing I can say in their defence is that at least Brock was tagged, by one of the best in the business. On the other hand, I agree with those who say that next year we can't afford McLean, Moloney & Jones on the ground together.

Surely Brock is injured?? He is one of the slowest players in the comp at the moment. Needs a rest regardless if he is injured or not as his impact has been ordinary of late. I don`t understand why we are playing Robbo when there are kids at Casey who need a taste in these last few rounds of footy. Very ordinary effort from all of the players YM mentioned!

Very astute Comment Y.M. We are crying out for quick midfielders, today showed that so well.

Those who make excuses about Mclean, Look hard. The last 2 games we played against weakened midfields. When the heat was on against a september midfield Brock took annual leave.

Bring on the Draft so the Backline & Forward line can Shine.........

McLean's inabillity to cope with a tag is seriously concering.

How many touches did he finish up with today?

I've heard people from within the club say his poor form is due to a lack of a pre season. This is totally understandable for a players first couple of games however it's round 16 now, lack of match fitness cannot be used as an excuse entirely for his poor form.

Will be interesting to see if Robbo get's another contract.

YM is a disgrace and should be banned forever.

Brock has not improved in three years.

Junior and Bruce have there best behind them. Bruce is still capable of very good play and displays it occasionally. Junior not so much. Club champs at their end. YM should be on his knobbly little knees thanking them for their service and willing sacrifice.

Robbo is done, see above.

And for all those fools thinking that we're great team waiting or that bailey cannot coach, today was a nice indication of what we need and why we cannot win. We do not have a midfield.

AFL website has him in our best YM.

BEST

Geelong: Selwood, Scarlett, Ablett, Chapman, Ling, Enright, Hawkins

Melbourne: Green, Grimes, Petterd, Bruce, Moloney

Maybe it is time you open your eyes and stop being so biased. His disposal efficiency was actually the same as Moloney's today at 67%. He is our vice captain, reigning best and fairest and good chance for this year's best and fairest, for a reason. As for his future he is 29 and barely ever had a soft tissue injury. There is no reason therefore why he shouldn't keep a spot in our side for 3-4 more years.

I do however agree that McDonald and Robertson should retire. Mclean has been good the last few weeks and had a bad day but let's keep things in context, he's playing in a B grade midfield against the competition's best. He is still one our best players.

Why call Y.M. a disgrace when he is just being Brutally Honest.

This club has carried players for too long. Some have been great, but have still played 1-2 seasons too long.

If we wish to play Deep in september we must get tough with player output. They are well paid to do a tough job.

Some make it & some don't. That's Life.

Bruce's Disposals today had very little influence on the game. He Tries very hard, but He is not a PRO ACTIVE player when it counts.

And as VC should no better after 200 Games

Hey, i think we are being too harsh on Brock, the guy hasnt done a pre season in 2 years so of course he is out of sorts, slow, going backwards etc. Give him a full pre season working on speed and what not and you will notice the difference! ease up ppl

I thought that's what everyone wanted at this stage of the season.

If YM is right, most people on this forum should be begging that these players are played for the remaining games.

Point Taken but i don't wish an injury to get worse. Brock has a Big Heart, But he was completely Pants today. It was quite sad to watch.

Can anyone ever remember Brock shaking a heavy tag? I can't.

Maybe he should look at Ablett's ability to shake a tag... Oh wait Jones was miles away the whole freaken day!!!!!!!!. NEVER again will I venture to that dump

Agree with YM.

Our Rucks don't inspire me either!

Perform or move on, time for our club to toughen up - a lot!

Selectors included.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
