Scully kicking efficency

afl.com.au have released stats from the u-18 champs. I noticed with surprise that scully's kicking efficency was 61.2%, Moribato (who everyone is bagging about his kicking) kicking efficency rate was 61.7%. I know that everyone will point to the fact that scully's overall disposal efficeny was 76.2% but I am not all that concerned about how well he handpasses. Is his kicking something to be concerned about?. I believe it is paramount that we get a midfielder who is elite by foot.

I also note that Trengrove efficency was 70.8% which was high compared to others.

I would not worry, I reckon if you looked at most players at that age would have lower % efficiency and they would get a lot better when at a AFL club.

i prey to god that we smash the cats on saturday,winnings contagious,lets take morton for an example,hes played 30 odd games an won about 5,is that good for his confidence,winners are grinners and losers can please themselves,you sheep dont seem to realise that our list is on the rise,our pp are gone, WHY BECAUSE OUR YOUNG LIST IS STARTING TO WIN,we have 7 games to go and they will win 3 of those games. I'm not really concerned by that stat. For alot of the games Scully played a lone hand as an inside midfielder and he was often having to deal with alot of attention as a stand out player.

I prefer to judge a player on what I see them do, not what the stats tell me.

kicking efficiency is the most overhyped stat. scully was probably getting twice as many kicks as those he's being compared, added to the fact he was in a poorer side than the wa boys would indicate he was the goto man under pressure.

i could run onto the ground, shank a kick 20m off the side of the boot into a team mates arms, get dragged and have a kicking efficiency of 100.00%

scully as of now is a clear leader in this draft and looks unlikely to be overhauled. if a kicking efficiency stat is causing you to doubt his value as a number one pick, i would say watch the kid on youtube, read reports abut him. all things willing, he'll be a star. he'll go number 1.

He is not just a good handballer, he is exceptional. He will be a clearance machine with that weapon.

Your right strawbs, he's not the best kid since the 2001 draft, he's just the best kid this year.

Not many teenagers are given quite that much attention. Throw that together with the amount of work Scully does in close anyway, and the kicking efficiency is pretty good.

And yes, looking at under-18 stats, you'd have to say that there's a general 10% improvement within a year or two at AFL level, though obviously there are plenty of exceptions. Part of this is just the way the game changes.

Remember also that we're talking about a kid with a berserk determination to improve, at the Judd/Buckley level, so set him up with a couple of AFL level coaches and he'll just bloom and bloom.

I reckon Glen Lovett was the best insider we've had over the last 30 years, pity his career was ruined by dodgey hammies. We never saw his best.

I thought of Lovett when I was posting, but didn't bring him up for 2 reasons.

His prowess was in long, sweeping 20-30 metre handballs, and you're right they were brilliantly weighted and always hit their intended target. But his hands in close weren't as quick or as damaging as Scully's.

This leads me to the second point which really is the crux of why I left him out. I can't agree with you about Lovett being an "insider". He virtually never played midfield. He played off a half back flank. So when I said "I've not seen a decent handballer in Melbourne's guts since I've been following the Dees" I didn't include Lovett because I don't consider him a mid.

Moloney has great hands.

I wouldn't say great, but they have improved over summer. In fact, the whole team has improved their handballing compared to the awful displays of 2008 where every second handball was to ankles and hitting the deck.

I have only seen a little of Scully but he has Scotty West type vision and execution with his hands.

Would suit Bailey's gameplan to have the premier midfielder an excellent distributor by hand that's for sure.

You my friend have now idea. We all love winning, the demons play to win, no question about that, but at this time we need to do everything we can to ensure our young players get as much game time experience as possible and if that means losing the next 7 games and securing our future stars then that is the best thing for our club, short term pain for long term gain

i have some idea mate, they screwed the PP in 07 and there going to do the same in 09,baileys strike rate is shithouse and he will do anything to improve it afterall its his job on the line,and as freo they are clearly the worst in the comp,there won 2 in a row, theres now way there gona lose 6 out of 7 games, at best we will get pick 2,3,4 or 5, 4weeks ago i was rubbing my hands togother scully, trengrove, after sunday thats just a pipedream.

as he is contracted till atleast end of next year i would of thought we would list manage in order to get scully and trengove, thus ensuring there is alot more improvment the following year wich IMO is the crunch year for bails.

i hope your rite mate, but after sundays game you have to wonder, they couldv made changes to lose that game, they chose not to,he coached 30 odd games, how many times as he been in front 3/4 time,its a major concern, when hes in front at 3/4 time

hes bloods rushing,and he wants to win.
