Loved his game on the weekend, and have really appreciated his efforts so far this year. I honestly hope he pushes Daniel Rich right to the finish for it.

I have to say as I arrived at the local train station to go in to Etihad Stadium for the Essendon game I was greeted by a group of young boys kicking a footy along the platform. They called out "Go Dees" & "Go Bombers" in unisom and I started chatting with them. One of the boys couldn't wait to proudly announce his brother played for Melbourne & he played for the Northerrn Knights. I didn't need a second glance to know he was Jack Grimes' younger brother. We talked freely and one of the subjects that came up was how many games do you go to? & for Jack's young brother Do you go to all his games? As someone who goes to as many games as possible, no matter what, I told him and his mates he should go to all his brother's games because you never know when he may kick his first AFL goal, take a speccy, be BOG.

Well, that night Jack did kick his 1st AFL goal & 2 weeks later he is BOG, and Rising Star nominee.

I'm watching this boy and he has a big fan base from his local area. They're rightly proud of their local hero and for what it's worth they believe their boy will be a great AFL player and a great MFC player and will be a great MFC captain.

Eyes on Jack!

Good work and well deserved lad. The first of many accolades you will get in your career.

About time.

Was always going to get it if we won, that's how good he's been. Goot to see Joeboy taking credit for a player who he has regularly derided in his 9-game career getting a Rising Star nomination that pretty much everyone on the site had anticipated he'd get.

Will be a legend.

45hotgod - preparing for the coming of the Grimes!

Well get your house in order 45h, because he's not just coming, he's already arrived!

Well done Jack, great effort against West Coast. All you needed was really a win by the team to get recognised. Superb nomination. Lookout Rich!

but I have RARELY said anything negative either . I really like the kid .

Well of the 8 games he's played this year you had 4 negative comments. Is 50% really RARELY?

The reason I make the point is I'm a big fan of his and have been from day one and I've been surprised that you've focused on his negatives and and ignored his clear class and development.

But you did get it right and there is plenty of room on the bandwagon; just don't expect a spot near the front!!

Half full / half empty - I stand by my comments .

He IS a terrific young player , of that there's no doubt .

My 3 word comments are based on how I see significant aspects of a player's performance on any one day , and I felt the comments were appropriate on the day - obviously you didn't !

Why is it that any young player who plays well is annointed as a possible captain at Melbourne.... first it was Mclean, I've heard Watts and Grimes.... Let these players become good AFL players before we worry about them becoming Captain....

I know they all have leadership written all over them but most of these guys were captains of there U18 because they were dominate footballers not just because of leadership... Even the Captains of the state side are usually the best players who go early in the draft

Jack certainly appears to have leadership qualities and has displayed them more than adequately at junior level.

Just read Emma Quayle's book "The Draft" for his team mates assessment of him - quite impressive.

And given the dearth of senior leadership around the club at present, the more juniors with leadership ability the better!

No offence to JB but this encapsualtes why I'm not a fan of the '3 word analysis.'

I mean, why three words? Do we all have ADHD? Short attention spans? We can't give a sentence on each player? 10 words will do, pure adjectives would be fine.

I know there is an audience for them and that's great as JB's OP generates discussion. Although a lot of the follow up posts by JB are 'qualifying' posts explaining his 3 words.

So give a bit more JB in the OP and you will have to write less explaining your assessments.

Anyway...

Grimes named as rover? Probably a good day to give him half a game in the guts.

It's pretty sad. All that bloody talent. The 2nd and 3rd quarters against Adelaide in that SF...

And we got away with grand larceny it seems...

Lethal Leigh did them a huge favour on his way out...

I think you'll find he is really struggling with his back injury. it may end up being quite serious, it will be made worse by his inability to be professional outside of footy i think.

In saying that he was far form there worst against port and it was his first game back form injury. but sadly in a massive game for the lions being left out i think ,eams he is in big trouble

If it was that. Don't you think it would have: -

OUT: Johnstone (back)

and not OUT: Johnstone

(ie. omitted)

I was at the Brisbane game and saw the last quarter of the Brisbane reserves v Broadbeach (or someone) and Trav was playing. He looked totally disinterested, made terrible decisions, was arrogant (tried to take tackles and muscle his way through situations and couldn't) and disposed of the ball in his usual flukey way.

He's had lots of problems over the journey. He's not looked after his body at all, ignored his rehab, alienated his team mates and as we all know never really applied himself over more than short periods of his career.

It has been a terrible waste Peter but Trav's problem was never football but his understanding, application and ABILITY to apply himself. Some players like Barty, Brown Dog and Godders had that ability in spades but limited ability, Trav is a classic couldhavebeen. BTW, we tend to blame people like Trav for this but it is no different to just having ordinary skills. He just didn't have the ability to do it.

I think it's quite possible Trav is playing his last season and may have played his last game. I doubt Brisbane will offer him a new contract and if he does play elsewhere it will be on base payments.

A very sad end to what could have been a great career.

It better than being the perennial victim of it. B)

It's spooky the way the careers of Grimes and Johnstone have mirrored each other at the same time. Grimes's first game was the weekend TJ was first dropped by Brisbane; JG rising star and BOG is the occasion for TJ's swansong, it would seem.

The Ottens/Johnstone comparison waxed and waned there for a while, with Ottens out of the blocks early (AA 2001), but after TJ's great 2002 season I can still remember turning to my mate in the old Ponsford at 3/4 time at the Adelaide SF of 2002 and saying words to the effect of: who wants Ottens now. In a development that was typical of his career, sadly TJ's next quarter provided an almost instant answer to that question, which has pretty much been emphatically reiterated since.

And by the way, giving TJ away for nothing would have been a good trade. That we got Jack Grimes for him is just sensational.

That is spooky.

Given we took White from Freo I dont think we would have taken Ottens. I think both of them have been underperformers at various stages of their careers. At least Ottens matured and developed into a capable footballer.

I agree we with your 2002 assessment of TJ.

We should have taken Simon Black who went at pick 31. :( B)
