Interesting comment on Footy Classified last night wasn't it?

Shame Garry wasn't actually at the MCG for a start, but I thought that was an unusual thing for him to say. He's a mate of Jimmy's and Chris Connolly's, you'd hope he's doing a bit behind the scenes yet it wasn't a great advertisement for the footy club or indeed for sticking with the club when they are down.

Reading too much into it?

It was a disgusting inept performance. If I was watching it on the tele instead of at the game, I would have turned it off too.

Would much prefer Garry to be honest instead of sugar coating, a pathetic performance.

That's fair enough.

The message then for those dopey supporters who sook cos the club aren't on free to air...if the club are playing footy that people dont want to watch, simple fact is we'll be playing on Sundays at 1pm and 4.40pm. Can you imagine if Channel 7 showed that game on Sunday, it would've been a ratings disaster! At least Fox dont have to worry as much.

Yes, you are reading too much into it.

Garry wasnt at the game as on sundays he coaches at least one of his sons junior footy sides - this is why he never does sunday games on Triple M. Yes, he is a mate of Jimmy & Chris and many others down the club, and yes - he does do things behind the scenes for the MFC.

The way the side played on Sunday night was not a great advertisment for the footy club - full stop!!

Garry wasnt sticking it to the club at all - just been honest.

Never question a legend of the club like Garry's love for the club.

I agree, Quite frankly i don't want our club on TV too much while the team is sub standard. If last Sunday's first Half was on free to air we could have lost sponsors.

Be Patient everyone, it is going to be a long Rough Road. Garry missed the last Q, bad Luck for him, but don't Question Garry's Passion, everytime he has pains in his back i am sure he thinks of the Melbourne Football Club. Seeing them play so poorly probably really pisses him off as he gave so much himself.

I'm sorry but were we the only team on the ground?

Are we the team trying to make finals?

Have we ever played that sort of uber-flooding, 18 man rolling zone crap?

Yes the game was [censored], and boring as all hell, but we did not dictate the style of play for three quarters!

When we finally switched on in the last, we kicked goals and the game came alive. It just took us too long to work out that Adelaide were not at all worried about providing any meaningful contest, and were content to choke up the game and walk away with an ordinary win against an ordinary side.

Credit to us for actually trying to compete for 120 minutes and turning the game into some sort of a contest.

I didn't watch Footy Classifieds, but did Gary say he turned off because Melbourne were playing terrible footy, or because the game itself was terrible?

Adelaide have to take a lot of the blame for the ugliness of the match. So far this year, we have played in some highly entertaining (if not poorly skilled) games.

He just said he turned it off, slightly under his breath as the station cut to an ad break.

Unfortunately some people forget what influence he does have for the benefit of our club in terms of exposure for the club on the footy show. I could not care less if he wasn't present at the G on sunday night. He was probably putting pen to paper for his weekly article for the good of the game and earning a crust. I am sure he and Jim have an understanding of when Jim needs his help he will pitch in. Turning up to every game would not be a part of that understanding.

Because you have no substance to question it?

What should this be based on?

Wrong answer. Read the quote again.

Never question a legend of the club like Garry's love for the club.

I'm not saying that there are or are not good reasons to question Garry's commitment (maybe I will later), I am asking why we should never question the commitment of someone who has an impressive on-field history at the club.

Can't say I've ever considered turning off a Melbourne game on TV.

I think I came close though, once. Vs Port Adelaide in 1998 in Adelaide. Can't remember why exactly but I remember throwing an empty Coke bottle at the TV screen more than once.

HaHa! I have chucked way more than a coke bottle at the TV while Melbourne has been playing on certain days, Broken a few Radio's to!

Who are you to question a man who played 13 years and gave everything including his body and his heart and soul to our footy club??

Me? I am just a Melbourne supporter and member.

Am I to infer form your response that you think that past players should be permanently immune to the questions of members?

P.S. Garry was well compensated for his time as a player.

edit: P.P.S. Just as he is well compensated the time he spends passively "raising the profile of the club" in the course of his media work.

Yes - it was a terrible game- but as Jaded has pointed out much of the blame should be laid at the feet of the Crows.

Adelaide had strength skill and experience on their side - but they put numbers behind the ball all day. They are the masters of defensive football in blustery conditions. At least we tried to play some attacking footy in the last quarter -which was more than they did.

I only wish we were good enough to dictate the pattern of play to teams like Adelaide

Spot on. As a member, financial contributor and supporter of MFC I will ask any question of any official, ex - player or officer of MFC. No one is above accountability to the members.

P.S. Did you lose a year of Gary's service in the quote or has the original post been edited?? <_<

I guess Skipper3 edited it. Not that it should make one whit of difference (besides his or her personal embarrassment).

edit: It seems I missed an "r" though - edited now!

I just watched a replay of footy classifieds and was not happy with Garrys comment.

I get the feeling with his lack of knowledge and throw away lines, he isn't passionate about the club.

I just wonder if he is anything near Jimmys passion for the club. I wonder sometimes.

Here's a link to a previous Garry discussion.

Feel free to read, bump, merge or ignore.

My views haven't changed on the matter, although another poster, Distance Demon, did just point out that:

Gary Lyon was not just on the list of major contributors [to the Debt demolition], he was pretty highly 'ranked' as well - the order was highest to lowest contribution, although of course they didn't publish the exact sums.

He should be commended for that at least.

gary almost operates as a consultant. Can sit in and advise on on-field issues as well as off. I think this is a good role for him and allows him to continue in the media without all those conflict of interest accusations etc. etc.

I think Warnock or Gouga summed it up pretty well last year. I don't think much has changed since then in the role Garry plays for the club. Like an advisor at times to Stynes, or a sounding board for Jimma.

If not much has changed since then, then that means that there is still no reason to believe that this is true. I guess it would be nice if it were though.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
