My Top 5 demons:

1. Norm Smith. Our greatest ever coach

2. Ron Barassi. Our greatest ever captain.

3. David Neitz. Stats don't lie.

4. Jim Stynes. See blog. Amazing story and the book is not yet closed. May yet rise to #1.

5. Robert Flower. Anyone who followed the club during our darkest hour would agree. Freak.

Pretty close to my thoughts but I would put Flower at three and Hassa Mann at six (I'm related!)

what about the top (worst) 5? of the modern era

1/ Brent Gergic - Nothing more needs to be said (ND's love child?)

2/ Luke Molan - injury & unluckiest player in a long time

3/ Neil Blame - probably years ahead with game plan, lack of understanding of players capabilities

4/ Nick Smith - Promising tall, delivered nothing

5/ Paul Gardner- Run the club to the wall in a time of economic prosperity, but always painted a positive picture

Now I know I will have my head bitten off by all the old cronies here. But I simply cannot have Ron Barrassi anywhere near my top 5 Demons.

He left the club at the peak of his powers for more money.

He coached 2 other clubs to premierships while we sat at the bottom of the ladder for 20 years.

No doubt he was a great player for us. The stats prove that. But to class him as one of our greatest people is simple wrong in my opinion.

Robert Flower was great for that exact reason. Numerous occasions knocked back significant more money and reward (prob would have been a premiership player had he gone elsewhere).

But I am pretty happy with the other four. And agree that Jim Stynes may well become (fingers crossed) a better administrator than player. For which I believe he is one of our greats.

When your first thought is to inverse a positive question you have become, perhaps, irredeemably cynical and bitter.

Barass not a Melbourne person?

No-one has done more for footy and, yeah, he left, but he came back to the team of his father and his heart.

Ask him about his desire to take his grandkids to the MCG to see the Demons and I would wager you would have a lump in your throat.

You are not seriously saying that "top" can relate to "worst," which is the only argument I can see you making here.

Look, it's not a major issue. I just don't think it should be reasonable to turn a positive thread, discussing the deeds of Barassi, Smith, Stynes, and Flower, into a "what about the Top (worst) 5 of the modern era" vitriolic vent session.

Start your own thread and post it.

i was rite near grinter when he shirt fronted chris mew in the 87 prelim, it was one of the best hits iv ever seen, when he put on a demons jumper he loved it, show some respect.

jeff farmer had 10 lengths on jakovich, and i wouldnt put him in the top 5, the wiz would easily be in the top 10, especially on the MCG, flower aside, champion players have premiership medals.

I know its a bit limited (time wise), but - can only go on players that I have seen week in week out live in action

Toughest

1) Rod Grinter

2) David Schwarz (3 knee reco's and he still came back & played bloody well - thats tough for me)

3) Todd Viney (Tough at the ball and never took a backward step)

4) Jimmy Stynes (Played in a hard position on the body, always go hurt but never layed down)

5) Steve Tingay (had a huge amount of bad injuries, but never ever gave up - kept going & going)

** My opion of "toughness" may differ from others, but like haircuts - we all have them.
