Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I am very anxious that MFC announce a sponsor now that the "Silly Season" is nearly over. Amongst other handicaps, the Club has not released any 2009 merchandise, which is a small "earner". If a sponsor is not available in the current financial climate, I have had a lateral thought following the success of the McGrath Foundation ventures at the Third Test. The National Basketball Association (NBA) in the States has a community-assistance program called "NBA cares". Could the AFL "chip in" extra to the MFC (I know that we've already received extra from the AFL & MCC) and the Club become the vehicle for community-outreach events on behalf of the AFL? Under a banner like "AFL is us"? The MFC already has a history in this area with our involvement in the Pink-Lady game. Instead of going to sponsor functions, players would attend community events. Games could be given themes to assist various community programs. This campaign would give MFC more community links. God knows the AFL needs to improve its public image, and to assist MFC after the draw and other imposts that we've been handed. Just a thought??

ND that is really interesting idea, partner it with Jimmys Reach program maybe.... have you sent it along to the ideas email address? [email protected]

That is left field thinking. Issue I would see is the AFL puckered up tight enough when we went to them for $2m to keep us afloat, would be almost impossible to get them to offer more monies to us. They also have there current community cup and each club does there own grass roots events.

I sent another one along recently to try and lift our exposure. HBO in the USA do a program called "hard Knocks" every NFL preseason, they follow around an NFL team during there training camp. Something like 6-8 half hour episodes that focus on the players and coaches and what they are doing. it might be a hard sell for MFC compared to a collingwood going to a network and trying to sell this insiders guide to a preseason but one Martin Cox from the Marketing Dept got back to me saying they will look into.

if we could get a network have uson a program like that, lifts our exposure and a sponsors too...

Its more reliable than your "opinion" that its two year contract.

Still ready to take on the bet for the benefit of MFC, shooter. ;)

While I normally share your healthy scepticism, Rhino, I give this rumour some credence.

I understand our last/only major sponsorship prospect fell over in the weeks leading up to Christmas. As I understand it, the company was a Mexican-based food manufacturer.

To show how far we have fallen, Collingwood were approached by a potential sponsor late last year. Collingwood had no interest but offered to introduce their unwanted suitor to the MFC in return for our agreement that they pitch to Brad Green and his management in the trade period.

Why would collingwood give a sponsor away in the current climate? this makes absolutly no sense, sounds more like an attempt to back door us for one of our best players, I'm suprised the team from visy wasn't behind this one!

There is a finite number of sponsorship properties a Club can sell and then fulfil.

There is also the potential for clash with an incumbent sponsor so we would have to say "No" to an approach from the Herald Sun because of our existing deal with the Age.

WCE have a waiting list of potential sponsors across most $$$ sponsorship bands.

Do you think I would come on here and just make the Collingwood/Green story up?

If the company wanted a major exposure with CFC but CFC already had major sponsor arrangements in place or the proposed sponsor conflicted with other obligations CFC had and was unable to provide the conditions required by the proposed sponsor, then its shrewd thinking to leverage their opportunities elsewhere.

Edit: Just saw Rf's explanation and its correct particularly about WCE.

Hmmm. That would explain some delay during trade period. Interesting.

That certainly casts the Green trade week happenings in a new light.

hence why I would find it strange pointing them in our direction, unless it was a rival airline?? who then signed a deal with Mr Collin$?? That could fit.

There are two teams in WA for WA companies to fight over.

There are 10 teams in Victoria. Its more competitive for the sponsorship dollar here. Collingwood knew they could not keep the prospective sponsor in reserve and knew they would go elsewhere so they sought to direct them to another Club that might be an advantage to them in other ways.

Yes It is actually in Collingwoods interest to help get Melbourne up & Running strong off Field. Thus they do not have to pay out to us the competitive Fund each year. I Really believe the MFC will be ok in a few years. North melbourne are the team i would worry about. Those sympathetic opposition supporters who bought memberships for the kangaroo's last year may not be as genorous in 2009.

All this speculation and here say counts for very little. The only thing we can all say with 100% conviction is that we might struggle to get one. The longer it goes without an announcement, the bigger the worry!

Maybe the club should chase "Tabasco Pepper Sauce" owner The Mcllhenny Company.

They're a very large food company and promote themselves through "espn" football and sporting events. www.tabasco.com (sorry, not sure how to post a link)

Media headings

"Tabasco Demons Running Hot"

"Tabasco Demons turn up the heat" etc.

....like I said.

I'm waiting for pitmaster to blame this disaster on Gardner and Harris.

I don't think anybody needs to play the blame game but surely plans for the possibility of a new sponsor should be made well ahead of time. Up to 12 months for such a major issue as this one. Now doesn't that go back to when they were in charge. So do we know if anything was done on this at an early stage to cover the possibility of the Primus deal not continuing beyond 2008?

it's simplistic to think of sponsorships as state-based. those using the argument against a tassie team that there isn't the sponsorship in tas are wrong -- many companies would jump at the national exposure -- or would have in better economic times. i forget whether the main west coast sponsor is sgio (a branch of gio) or hungry jacks (started in perth but surely national?) essendon 3, collingwood emirates, is carlton hyundai? none exclusively victorian.

Interesting quote RFW - maybe you're to blame - oh no, you were trailing on olgreydingo's tail as I remember. the only thing doggie got wrong was the destination. But he was barking repeatedly about this outcome before your head popped up.

I'm not going to go over last week's conversation again, but your pompous, self regarding posts change nothing about why we are in this vulnerable position.

I actually hope CS succeeds in negotiating another sponsor. If he does not, you, I think would overdose on schadenfreude.

I hate them so much!!

Whoever these potential sponsors were, they have clearly made the wrong decision...

Don't blame EFC. I would hope MFC would have done the same thing. Hate the AFL. It's them that gave us the crappy draw.

Wow, I always wondered how Melbourne supporters became so divided in 1996. Behaviour like this shows it pretty clearly

Indeed.

I'm sure if our Demons were given a much more accomodating draw by the AFL, we would be a much more attractive proposition for a sponsor wanting to spend between $1 million and $1.5 million dollars a year for 3-4 years.

CS is working very hard along with others, it will happen soon. Blaming CS is barking up the wrong tree IMO.

If we weren't such a horrible side to watch on the field we would be given a better draw.

We can't ask for help from the draw until we provide something successful or at the very least entertaining on the field. The two go hand in hand.

It'd be nice if that wasn't the case but it is.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
