The Captaincy

Rolling Stone

last year they put white, yze and nieta in it, and to those young kids those choices probably looked pretty good a year ago.

its a long process.

White was never voted on the leadership group.

Neitz was already in it as a consequence of being "given" the captaincy publicly by the Club pre-season.

Yze was voted on then voted off mid season. It did seem like the younger players started to learn something about leadership.

Brock's the one i want, anyone else would feel like a soft option. He projects exactly image we want the footballing world to see going forward.

I'm also firmly in the Brock camp for the reasons that you have outlined Pates. A few months ago I would have said Greeny, but I now think its time to change the guard. Brock has served his pennance, and I now think he is the standout candidate to deliver the type of on and off-field example and leadership that our youngsters will look up to and thrive on into the future.

hrm

leadership.

first

the club and players must decide what it wants to be.

i dare say they will want to decide they are the hardest working, who work together the best (or something)

then its simple

select the leaders on who fit what they want to become the best.

if we want to be the hardest working club, pick the hardest worker as the captain.

its simple.

if we want to be the slackest, softest club around

pick bruce.

Yeah Bruce is so slack. 2 R/U B&F and one B&F. Best clubman etc. Have a look at his work rate both at training and in a game. He is one of the hardest workers at training. Have a look at his face when we lose. The guy bleeds for MFC. Try keeping up with him in a game Benno. I doubt you could run 15 kms but maybe I'm wrong. He will captain MFC.

Yeah, the tears making his mascara run.

I'm sure bruce is a hard worker, but is not, is not the way I want the team to play football.

I want to see a tenacious side that takes no prisoners.

Like how we played with Barassi & McMahon.

Fair enough comment but those great teams had the Bruce types as well as the hard men like Ron and Noel. Ones to come to mind are Tunbridge, Ridley, McKenzie, Dixon, Melville, McLean and quite a few others. These players were the SKILL supply complementing the tough guys. Add Mithen and Laidlaw to your tough man list. You must have BALANCE and looking at the teams of the 50's most were ball players. So maybe we don't need a team full of thugs to win a premiership.

Here here Bob!!! Besides his shocking comb-over Bruce is a true blue, red & blue champion in every sense!

Is he captain? Personally I'd go with a Green/Brock combo. Unfortunately for Peter (Brock) he needs to show he can stay on the field.

No one has questioned having Bruce in the side (that i read) or that we should have a team of only tough nuts, just that Bruce's style of play is not what we want in a captain and not what we want representing the club as our chosen leader.

I respect Bruce as a player and he's been a great servant of MFC, but when i look at him i don't see a captain. When i watch McLean play he screams captain, so to me it's that simple as to who i'd rather of those 2

I hope for Brock, as I see him being the best and obvious choice going forward (and I will apologise for that cliche up front!!).......

I hope that the club has the guts to actually appoint him though, as while I have been a fan of Green's I don't see it happening, Bruce is simply not the right choice and a step backwards captaincy wise IMO, and McDonald will be hard pressed to hand onto his position for the year (his final year).

McLean to me is the obvious choice both now, and moving into our hopefully successful future :) !!!

Those are exactly my sentiments, Bruce as been a hard working individual and sad as it is, consistently our best player out on the ground. He trains hard and he represents the club well. BUT his leadership abilities, that is when the team is looking for someone to be inspired by, he is not the player i want our boys emulating. He is a receiver, he has poor disposal, and does not get the boys moving.

Although this contradicts my choice, the player who did that the best this year was Miller. He had the right mixture of aggression and skill, and was instrumental in all of our wins especially the two tight ones. Do i think he should be captain? No. He has only just this year got back to some good form and he needs to show he can replicate that this year before he can be considered in the captaincy role, however i am more than happy to eat humble pie when i was bad mouthing his inclusion in the leadership group for 08.

For McLean it's a different kettle of fish, he has made some mistakes off-field which has hurt his image and the club's reputation. The thing i really like about him is that he isn't making excuses, he recognises what he did was wrong and is willing to make amends. He has had offers from other clubs but he has turned them down, he had a season ending foot injury and was in a huge amount of pain but he went out onto the ground because we needed inspiration, he donated 10k to the club because we are in financial disarray, the equivalent to what the entire team donated. If that is not a captain, then i don't know what is.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
