I think it was '03 against the Saints. Scores level quarter time. Scores level half time. Won the last quarter by a point, down by a goal with about 7 minutes left in the third quarter. Closest of close matches.

Except for the 7 goals we piled on in those final 7 minutes of the 3rd quarter

Yeah good game that one.

It was the week after Neitz got turfed out of the casino, and his leadership qualities were being seriously questioned. The team were also going terribly.

That 3rd quarter was champagne footy and I can remember a young Chris Heffernan playing a massive role.

3rd: Comeback to defeat Essendon at Windy Hill after 10 goals down - can't remember year wasn't bad either.

It wasn't 1990 by any chance. I think we were down by 38 points early in the last quarter.

Got an old copy of that game after taping the 6:00 replay that night!

Mine would have to be 2007 against Essendon, Daniher’s last game. David Neitz stepping up and trying to win the game when he was clearly injured

Apart from from watching our premierships in '55,'56,'57 '59,'60,and '64, my best moments would be:

Our brilliant comeback against Carlton in 2000 qualifying final. My bragging Blues supporting neighbour hid himself away for months. This win was all the sweeter since Carlton had beaten us by nearly 100 points earlier in the season.

!987 Round 22 we are in the finals after a long bleak period. We not only had to beat Footscray but hope that the Hawks could beat the cats. Both happened.

!987 Our truly magnificent wins in the Qualifying final against North and our Semi Final V Sydney. Huge margins.

Most devastating moment. Hearing on the radio that Buckenara had kicked a goal after the siren to lose to Hawthorn in the 1987 Preliminary Final. Never been more depressed about a footy result.

The second and third quarters in the semi final against the Crows in 2002 were awesome. I don't think I've ever been more pumped up - we were down by about 50 after the first quarter and then Travis Johnstone entered the game. Nearly shed a tear on the final siren though - was absolutely gutted with that loss, because it was bloody unlucky (Powell being knocked out first touch of the ball, Robbo and Yze having a sickening head clash at a crucial time in the final quarter, Whelan doing his hammy etc).

A great, great game with loads of pathos. Despite the loss, was very proud to follow the Dees that night ...

The first and last quarters we were smashed. Especially the first quarter. That sickening collision did come at a crucial time. TJ disappointed me in the last quarter, because of a depleted line up we were struggling for numbers and TJ wanted to rest on the bench at a crucial time - after such a good game in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. I was devastated after that game. Even though I thought the boys had a great year after 2001. I remember thinking Collingwood was the next opponent in the Prelim. Wasn't to be.

My favourite moment? Probably the first game I ever went to, Melbourne vs Carlton in what wikipedia assures me was round 7 1989.

First a bit of background:

My parents are English (moved out here in 1981) and never really got into VFL, so I was essentially born into a blank-slate with regards to supporting a team. When I first went to school in Australia (I was born here, but first went to school in England - long story) I quickly learned that following a VFL team was basically mandatory if you wanted to socialise with any of the other kids. For reasons that remain obscure to me even to this day, I picked Carlton.

Like I said, my parents didn't follow the VFL at all, so I'd have to turn up to school on Monday to find out the weekend's results, which my friend Alex was only too keen to share with me. In 1989 Carlton were pretty hopeless (losing their first 5 games) and I soon grew tired of having the [censored] taken out of me for supporting the worst team in the league, so I decided to switch allegiance to a more successful club. Hawthorn were at the top of the ladder at that time, but I couldn't choose them because that was the team that Alex supported. Instead I went for the second team on the ladder, which just happened to be Melbourne.

So the first game that I ever went to was Melbourne vs Carlton in 1989. My dad - who took me - had ever only been to one game before (Footscray vs someone at the Western Oval) and he absolutely hated it. Why he opted to take me on this occasion, I'm not really sure. But anyway - and this will probably stay with me for as long as I live - I can remember walking into the MCG telling him that Carlton and Melbourne were the two teams that I supported, so whichever team won didn't really matter to me.

Neither of us had any idea how the the game worked. My dad soon figured that a kick through the big posts was worth six points and that a kick through the little ones was worth one, but beyond that the rules of the game were a mystery to us (I still feel that way sometimes, actually). All I know is that Melbourne were winning for most of the game and that Carlton came back hard in the last quarter. I still have visions of Tommy Alvin (more to the point, that pony-tail of his) running the ball down the wing in surge after surge towards the northern-end goals. The margin went from 25 points at three-quarter time (again, I'm relying on wikipedia here) to level with not very long to go. I complained to my dad that Carlton had more players on the field than Melbourne did, with my dad reassuring me that it just seemed that way. I wasn't convinced, though, and can remember feeling quite panicked at how the game was panning out.

I can't remember exactly what happened next, but rest assured that it was all for the best. Darren Bennett took a mark (at what would now be the southern stand end), went back, converted truly and Melbourne won by a goal. Everything else surrounding that moment is a blur, but all I know is that any ambiguity about my footballing allegience was put well and truly to death right then. Since then, the rest of my family has become members of the club (if you ever see any crazy old English people in Melbourne scarves, there's a pretty good chance they're my parents) and I've never looked back.

So while that game probably isn't particularly memorable in itself, it's probably the sole reason I became a Melbourne supporter (I'm not sure how it would have turned out if we'd lost) and it's definitely one I'll never forget.

yes we would have been out - under the old system the bottom two losers were out. so i think 8 and 6 were out that year because we won.

We put hawthorn out as we were seven beating two. they'd been beaten on the saturday, I think, & then became the lowest-placed loser. I was sitting near Jason Dunstall & he was getting unhappier as the game went on. must have been later the same day that collingwood (8) came close to beating west coast (1) -- would have been a spectacular introduction to the top 8 system. Think we backed up next week by thrashing footscray then the dream ended v. WC at the WACA.

My favourites are 94 ef v. carlton; 88 pf v. carlton; 2000 final v. carlton; winning at vic park in 1992 (I think); a great victory at windy hill around the same time & the kardinia park victory after years of traipsing down there for beltings & honourable defeats.

also, because we are melbourne & different, two losses make the best of -- the merger match, when it was in our interests for hawthorn to make the finals & neita played a blinder in an emotional, desperate match under a full moon & that 2002 final v. adelaide -- the most exciting comeback & trav's brilliance on show only to be beaten.

Yes. it was unbelievable. I'll never ever forget when Todd Viney snapped truly for the first goal for Melbourne......the roar was something else...it was if the giant had awoken from its slumber.

Many experts rated as as the best side in Victoria coming into 2007. It carefully excluded the Swan, WCE and Freo for starters. If we improved we were a top 4 chance. We didn't. We went backwards in every facet.

Hindsight is indeed a wonderful thing.

I still can't really get my head around how people thought we were destined for big things in 2007.

I guess because in 2006 we finished 5th, which was the best of all the Victorian teams. But yeah, the amount of people who expected so much of us was a bit bewildering.

My favourite moment from our footy club would have to be the 2002 season and in particular the semi final. Although we lost that match against adelaide its still a great memory, it brought about alot of emotion that the melbourne footy club has failed to bring in recent years.

1990 at Windy Hill!! Darren Bennett went off in the Last Q. Brilliant Day, Last time i saw a game at that feral dump. Kicked 4 goals in Time on to win. Steve Odwyer left a lot of his teeth in the centre circle that Day. I have the whole game on tape.

Proper Hard Footy. Thought i was going to be killed getting out of the ground. It got a bit scary. Essendon were not happy.
