New CEO

The whole NRL is "sponsored" by its banker of last resort News Corp. The Storm have not paid their financial way at all. Smart recruiting is the smarts of the Football department not the CEO.

From what i can work out Waldron has quite a bit to do with Players and there Business Dealings. The Coach is there Long Term so & he is the best in the land so they must be doing something right.

I don't know the answer, i have heard him speak regulairly for the past 2 years. I Think he would run a tight Ship-worth considering.

Fine and so he should be as well as his CFO. The tight financial ship should be the responsibility of the CFO. The CEO should be out building and developing the brand. Anyway thats not recruiting.

AN Open question. Given the "specific " (if unknown ) views of Chairman Jim regarding the CEO's position what is likely to be the mandate under which the new incumbant will operate. What will he be expected to do and in what direction ? Its all a bit airy fairy at present really.

The NRL is 50 per cent owned by News Corporation. The other half is owned by the Australian Rugby League which runs State of Origin and international matches. Three News Corp executives and three ARL reps sit on the Partnership Executive Committee which runs the NRL competition.

In essence, the NRL is merely a part-owned asset of News Corp.

The Brisbane Broncos is majority owned by News.

Brian Cook nearly took the GC17 CEO challenge. He said he is looking for a new challenge (on SEN), and he was considering the move to the Gold Coast with his family.

If you want the best, he's the man. It's up to Jim and the board to make an interesting and attractive package and offer, that is if they want the best CEO.

I hope for all our sake, we get the best.

Everyone would probably agree he would be the best, but he is simply unavailable.

I think you'll find that Brian Cook recommitted to Geelong when he rejected the approaches from GC17.

Absolutely correct..cant quite get why anyones thinkig otherwise.

So is the Storm and would probably not even exist at least not to the success they have now without News ownership.

I dont think any which way you jig it that much can be drawn egarding success or failure , other than on the field, at the NRL. Its a closed shop living inan artificial environment. If it wasn't the pet project of the Nine network in cahoots with News it wouldnt exist at all. The ghost of Kerry survives for the moment.. Running an NRL club is tantamount to paper pushing in comparison to the AFL. I think we would be better to look at more accountable environments to garner our next Chief.

While that is perfectly valid Bub, I think that you massively under-estimate the heavy lifting required in running any club, especially up here.

The difference for the Storm is that they have no financial instability given they are an experiment in a hostile area and therefore are taken care of via News.

But for the Sydney clubs it is a far different story and one that could well end in tears for a couple of them, unfortunately.

That being said I am not sure Waldron would be a great fit.

while i agree that Cook will not be going anywhere some of us think that he is the best man for the job

pretty sure its aslo the same brian cook who played 4 games for the demons

one thing that is certain is that we MUST get the CEO selection right this time

Is that so? How interesting. That surely means we need to quietly remind him that he needs to come home on a reguliar basis. Every man has his price

The concern with Storm is that it is not a profitable standalone club and is indeed a (financial) experiment of News. The life (and death) of any NRL Club is and will be subject to the whim of News Corp. NRL is not profitable standalone operation without the guidance and financial resolve of News. In that way it is an artificial environment.

NRL is a build on a financially fragile house of cards which on current tracking will have one or more Clubs someday keel over. The lose of gaming revenues will further tighten the screws on the game.

He has RECOMMITTED to Geelong. He is a professional manager - such a commitment will be honoured.

Cook is not available. End of story.

Correct you are, all i am saying is that if Brian Cook Played even a small amount of games for melbourne, we should do all we can to get him back in the fold, and i will continue to believe that.

Good things can take time to eventuate..

I would hope we would attract Brian Cook or anyone else on the basis of what they can provide the Club. Whether someone has or has not played for MFC previously ahould not be a major consideration of them for the position. After 44 years in the wilderness, I dont see the big reason to favour ex-players into executive positions unless they are the best available for the position.

In the very same manner playing the game does NOT necessarily set you up as a coach. You might be able to play , but have no nouse come emparting that to others. And so just having played in our beloved guernsey means nothing really come time to select a CEO. Many make the mistake of confusing passion for a club with ability. You MAY have both but the former doesnt guarantee the latter.

We want a good CEO..a damn good one..whoever he or she is..Thats right..why couldnt it be a woman ?? They manage corporations and countries just fine.. a little ol messpot of a footy club ought not be beyond scope !!

What Im saying..is we want the the BEST person.. doesnt matter who, where or why..just that they can and will do the job well. We want/need results...not another at the bar swapping ol match day memories !!

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
