Andy Lovell's Sandringham Wrap

Recommended Posts

gotta be happy with grimes. just hope like hell that he gets through the next pre-season training.

I'm also thinking that Maric is going to be better than I thought. I didnt think he was capable of such big numbers, whatever level of competition.

The Zebras have the bye this week and their next game is a crucial one taking place at MC Labour Park on the following weekend against the Northern Bullants.

Meanwhile, Andy Lovell's Sandringham Wrap on melbournefc.com.au is as fascinating as ever!

Thanks for the link BBB, I always look forward to Chopper's assessments of our players. This would have to be the most positive report on our youngsters for the year.

Really excited by Grimes. His back problem saw him get to us with pick 14 last year after being highly rated by the club. It's always a risk taking a player with this sort of injury so let's hope he gets over it and becomes a champion.

I'd like to see Maric in the team this week. As we know he's young and is still probably coming to terms with the extra attention he gets form all the chicks at school!! We might as well give him a little taste before the year is out even though he may not be quite ready.

I wouldn't say I'm as big a fan of Petterd's as most people (I want to see more of him first) at this stage but he seems to be coming good as well. I'm also looking forward to his return to the dees team.

When we get more games into the likes of Bate, Morton, Jones, Garland, Warnock and Dunn to name a few, we should have the makings of a reasonable team. Add in a few nice picks in the next draft and we will come out of these dark times. It's going to take a while so hopefully we will still be around when they start negotiating the new round of TV rights.

if petterd goes back to the gold coast, i will be fully pissed off. we have to sign him on a 3 yr contract asap

So will I.

I think that Petterd along with Clint Bartram are only going to keep on improving - especially with a full pre season behind them.

I agree with everything Chopper said about Petterd except for the comment about Sunday's game being "his best game so far this year." His game the week before against Williamstown was at least its equal. This means that he's played two high quality games in a row at VFL level so he can't be too far away from a return to the Demons.

anyone get the feeling every report is rosey from Andy Lovell ? When you read half a dozen players reviews, they all look like they should be in the Dees side.

I think Chopper is pretty even handed with his player reviews and calls it as he sees it. He does n ot always give glowing reports and needs to balance honesty with the need to not blow a young guy's confidence.

I think his reviews are generally pretty realistic.

People must have faith in the football department and list management at the MFC. Saying you will be [censored] off if Petterd goes back home to the Gold Coast isn't going to solve the worlds problems. Or change the footy departments beliefs.

Same as what happened with Jolly and Thompson. Build a bridge and get over it.

Who knows for Petterd could be a first round draft pick from the Gold Coast franchise in trade talks.

Button your lip and have faith in your club! Right now, he's going no where anyway!

Would you be unhappy if the new GC team offered a top 10 pick for him?

The impression I get is that a player's total possessions in the modern game flatter to deceive, and is somewhat irrelevant.

Teams rack up close to 400 possessions these days, which averages out to 18 per player. So 25 possessions is about average for a running player.

And Backmen seem to have never had better possessions in the past like they do now!

the only upside of the gold coast side coming in is that they will have a glut of picks that they will be expected to offload for some players. that means they will pay over the odds for certain players. ricky looks like being good, but if we are going to lose anyone, i hope it is for top 10 picks.

Theres a bit in this I think. Come time to start for real the GC 'whatevers' are going to want to be at least a little bit competitive or theyll die the death of a thousand cuts up there. In order to do so they must use their ONLY currency to achieve players..and that is trade picks. I think it'l lbe an interesting market where an astute club wil come away better !!

Look if some players go..they go..get over it.Wed al llike out favourite sons to stay and shine...but really I couldnt give a rats..I only want a TEAM to do well..who that comprises of I care not..!!

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
