Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Give Meesen game time ?? Inspired :) Seriously.. Lets see if he has anything..Its not likethe results matter unless he turns out to be OK . Got to mind that draft pick !! lol

If he cant make an impact at repeated efforts at Sandy, I dont see the value of denying another player of a role. At present we have PJ and White in the rucks with Jamar as back up. Jamar cant cut it. But Meesen is inferior to Jamar.

Drop Jeff White and give him a shot. There is nothing to lose. White had no impact again today.Jamar was possibly better and had more hit outs I believe. Why on earth did we trade for Meesen if we are not going to see what(if anything)he can do at AFL level.

White needs to hang up the boots. Playing him denies us new growth. I think we may as well give Meesen a couple of games before the years out. We already know that Jamar can't cut it. Trade him to Richmond for a 3rd or 4th round pick(try anyway!)

Rhino..youre missing the obvious.. I dont care if we win or not. But if we are to have irrefutable evidence that he can or cant..well lets get it over with.,. and make PEMANENT room on the list.. not just game day

I dont think he was recruited especially as a ruckmen.. I thought they ( club geniuses ) had KPP tagged on him.

personally id had a whisper in his ear.. tel lhim how it is.. Give he a make or break set of games.. He is either part of us gong forward or he's taking us space. We need to , as a club , become far more astute as to when to fold ( in cards terms ) we hang on to some almost because we dont wont to admit we ( like all ) get it slighly wrong sometimes !!

I havent seen anything in him to warrant a locker next year...but am prepared ( good of e really ) to give him a shot.. but its now, when it doesnt matter, not later when it might !!

Meesen makes Jamar look like a champion and Jamar cant cut it.

I dont care about winning or losing. But if you are looking for irrefutable evidence, do you ever get to Sandy and see the Zebras play? I have seen Meesen on four occasions. He has done nothing, gets little of the ball and looks like he aint gonna have an impact on a match and guess what... he doesnt. He is struggling in the minnow league and gives no evidence that he has the calibre to go much further.

I am happy to promote a guy if he shows at least some potential. I have seen little or nothing so far.

He has two years on the list to show something. He needs to show he can compete at Sandy before I would waste a game.

Actually I do know where TBO is.. ( and some other grounds even ) and have seen him also. He doesnt inspire me much either. But if we were to even for a moment consider him as a potenitial list position occupant next year.. lets see if he has ANYTHING !! He mioght as wel lfly or fall in a game or two in the big boys as hav ehim occupy a berth at any level. Who knows he might just do something..or more likely cement his position on the past players list .

Whats it going to matter. Either he does show something and we keep...or we know for certain and we rid. Or would you rather do it next year ?? they're the only options otherwise an argument could be mounted that he was never given a chance.

I watched some of last week's VFL game on ABC, and from what I saw he was pretty soft. Sorry guys, but I think we might have lost out of that deal.

John Meeson is a raw footballer,

He has good size, grat engine, and is rated by many in the footy world..

He has had a lot of injury niggles this year, but I expect him to play his MFC debut very soon, as White's back-up, especially now that PJ will play as a permanent forward, which is what he was always meant to be..

Jamar and Meeson will compete for this role, but IMO Meeson could have alot to offer, just needs to get his body right, he was good pre season, and alot of people expect big things..

Just play it slow.. he'll get his chance shortly, dont dismiss the guy half way through his 1st year, id be worries about guys who have been here 3 or 4, and still show nothing!! theres plenty of em'..

When you have 22 other mainly young players in the team who are struggling to be competitive and you have got another player who is barely cut the mustard in the VFL it makes a lie of other criteria.

If we are trying to develop PJ as an AFL footballer why are we giving concessions to play a player who on form makes Weetra's selection this year seem reasonable.

they're the only options otherwise an argument could be mounted that he was never given a chance.

Big deal.

Now that argument would really hurt the club. I am sure Heath Neville must be wording the HS up on that issue.

If does not produce at this Club in 2 years,it will six years and 2 clubs where he has flunked. Adelaide must struggling with the argument you worry consider they also gave Hudson away in the same year. They must have thought they got a steal when they got pick 37 for him because they went for another ruckman with the pick. They knew what we were getting.

They must be hiding low at present especially those they pushed for pick 8, 4 years ago.

If he is competing with Jamar for a role, he is definitely the back marker. If he is still competing with Jamar on the MFC list at the end of 2009, they are both finished.

Granted he has 2 years on his contract but he may well convince people in 2 years what takes other players 3 to 4 years to do

Promoting him for the sake of it is ridiculous. What's the basis of expecting he can do something at AFL level if he's struggling at VFL level? Not to mention the fact that he's still got another year to go on his contact anyway.

Btw, how's Meesen compare to Moran?

Well Moran atm is probably the most athletic big player in the league.

2metres tall, 100+ kilos but holds the fastest time over 20metres recorded at the draft camp (albeit an unofficial time).

Think he only started playing footy at 16 or thereabouts and looked the goods in his first few games but obviously North didn't like him that much

John Meesen was drafted for this year and looms as the worse trade. As an ex Crows player you would think he would get a game or at least be named as an emergency.

What' the go with him?

And who did crows get as pick 37 from us ?

Well Meesen is only 21. I'd wait until we've seen him under Bailey at least until the end of next year. He is a work in progress. Just 2 games with the Crows. I saw him in Round 1 of NAB Cup down at skilled, moves well, still green though. Alot of upside. Craig cameron missed him in the draft when the Crows beat him to it. Apparently he was spewing on the Crows. C.Cameron rates him highly. Pursued him a the trade table last year and got him. Unfortunately you can be the fastest big bloke over 100Kg and break record times but if you can't find the ball, you can't cut it in this game. Will be interesting to see what happens if the Dees pick up Natanui. We'll have White, Jamar, Johnson, Meesen and Natanui. Somethings got to give....

the trouble is, he's not a good size!
I went down to the NAB Cup match v Geelong [one of about 4 demon supporters!] largely in order to look at the recruits. I knew this bloke is said to be 201 cm.
Someone has pulled the wool over our eyes. He's no taller than White/Jamar, for whom the new ruck rule has been a killer.
In fact, that great day at Geelong Meesen didn't attempt to contest a single ball-up. Seemed to be playing on the wing! I agree, we've been dudded here--I heard he was the great white hope for our rucks.

Another CAC beauty. Enjoy this year Richmond it's all down hill from here on. Even when he plays with Spencer he is the second string ruckman the man is a joke he should be playing with Weetra. The only thing that will save Meeson is his contract, on form he should be sacked.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just found an interesting article on the Herald Sun website.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl...3-19769,00.html

Mike Sheahan (a Melbourne supporter) Is quite positive towards the club and its future except his comments on Meesen.

The only apparent blemish in the list overhaul is the painfully slow progress of the only recycled player picked up between seasons, ruckman John Meesen, from Adelaide.

The Crows gave up a first-round draft choice (No. 8 in 2004) to get Brad Moran, from North Melbourne.

While Moran hasn't been sighted this year, Meesen has done nothing to suggest Adelaide made a blue.

This doesn't seem worded very well.

The Crows may have used a first-round draft choice to get Meesen, but they then used a third(?) round pick last year to get Moran from Kangaroos, the pick they were received for trading Meesen to Melbourne.

Ye. It wasn't very well written but it is clear that the message that he was trying to get across is that Meesen is a spud.

give him time...

he hadn't done a whole lot at adelaide either... was pretty poor for norwood... a lot of crows fans happy to see him go...

he played 2 games at the end of last season, when adelaide were short of ruckman... didn't have great games, but apparently beat cameron wood when the crows played brisbane...

given that he didn't set the world on fire in the sanfl, there must have been something that craig cameron still saw in him... lets hope we can find it...

And I suspect that Bails would have seen / heard a bit about him in Adelaide last year, and noted sufficient to work with / take a punt on. Worth another year under Bailey I reckon.

I don't think Bailey, who was in Adelaide with Port of course, drafted Meeson with the intent of using him as a ruckman per say. He (Bailey) would have known of his original Draft CV, & his poor reputation whilst in Adelaide but he has a great capacity to run with endurance & has agility.

He could be developed into a tall running type player similar to Adam Goodes. The question is does Meeson want to compete with opponents badly enough to survive this competative game Aussie rules.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
