  1. Don't see anything wrong with our current emblem and think we have far bigger issues at the club to worry about!
  2. Why oh why Dlanders do you continue to respond to this guy^^^
  3. Are you serious started coaching in early 20's after serious knee injury ended his career, won a Sandover at 18 in his first full season. Took East Fremantle to Premiership in 1974 before moving on to Swan Districts in the late 70's who were the basketcase of the WAFL at the time, after a tough time took them to consecutive finals appearances from 80-85 including runners up in 1980 & 3peat Premiers in 82/83 & 84. Some may say this is only WAFL but at this time the WAFL went through a golden era with players such as Maurice Rioli, Stephen Michael (best player never to play VFL/AFL), Graham Moss, Steve Malaxos, Simon Beesley, Phil/Jim Krakouer, Brad Hardie, Brian Peake, Kevin Mitchell, Gary Sidebottom, Phil Narkle, Allen Daniels, Tony Buhagier, Graham Melrose,Nicky Winmar among others. Took Meth Coast to their first finals appearance in 1988 and after went back to Swans in 1990 to coach them to a Flag. Returned to his original club South Fremantle and coached them to a flag in 1997 before heading into retirement. Sorry Jazza way off the mark with John Todd in this category, a true great of the game in WA and from teh old school hymn book of coaches. Damien Drum should be on your list
  4. The only one I can think of off the top of my head who played in both Grand Finals is Michael O'Loughlin
  5. Was right hand man to Cahill during 1997 & 98 took over the following year and from memory took them to finals in his first year where they lost to North. There original draft concessions were not great (nothing like GWS & Suns) they traded there first pick in 1996 draft which Meth Coast used for Gardiner. From 1999 to 2004 he had Port as a formidable side who finished minor Premiers 2 or 3 times. He then rebuilt the list from 04-07 and got them to the GF again in 07 where they lost to the powerful Geelong side. I think he had run his race with Port by the end of 08 and it was time for him to move on then but he basically built two very good sides at Port!
  6. I don't think we'll get a PP but if we do I think it will be at the middle to end of the first round, I don't really care about time we stopped worrying about picks to get us out of our problems
  7. I don't think it matters if flash is around or not, if Garlett continues on his current improvement since last season it is because not getting drafted last season has embarrassed him and made him realise this is his shot! Tom Roach, Shaun Hilderbrandt, Tallan Ames are the on field leaders at Swan Districts and I have watched them this year encourage Dayle throughout his games. Specifically it has sunk in with Garlett so far and he just needs to continue on his current path, the danger time for him is if Swans don't make finals and he has downtime between the end f season and the draft. Hopefully his employment in the fitness industry makes this a non issue and he turns up lean and hungry. It's up to him!
  8. Pretty much it in a nutshell, this is the main source of our current predicament!
  9. Would mean a lot more if Mitchell, Sewell, Hodge, Rioli and Guerra were in our side, what a difference 5 players would make. Two clearance kings, probably the best crumbing forward going around, tough hard nosed defender who would provide safe options out of defence and a true leader who is one of the smartest players going around. Those 5 is where the difference lies not in our forward half (barring Cyril)
  10. Look honestly without sounding horrible, I don't buy this indigenous leader stuff. If your a leader your a leader, the indigenous leader side of things didn't help with Wonna or Liam. By all means allow flash to have some input but Garlett needs greater influences in workrate. My understanding is he has picked up work within the fitness area and is currently in a relationship which bodes well for him off the field. Lewis Jetta improved at Sydney because he was made train and run with Keiran Jack during the off season, If and for me still a big if to draft Garlett he would be getting taken under the wing of Todd Viney and given mentors like Nathan Jones in how to work hard. On seeing him so far this year I would take him somewhere in the 2nd round but long way to go in the year when he could move up, stay the same or move down the pecking order One thing I forgot to put in the post number 49 for Swans did a lot of nothing with a few disposals and failed on a few occasions to put his body on the line. For you Old Dee 49 was Jamie Bennell
  11. Well due to other commitments I was disappointed I couldn't make WA vs Vic Metro in the u/18's this morning, but this afternoon I headed to Leederville Oval to see Subiaco vs Swan Districts with both coming off the bye and wins against top 4 sides in their previous outings. The game was a tough call for local tipsters who expected a contest but let me say I headed there expecting to see a close contest but it was anything but that. Worst most listless game of football I have seen this season. Sheed was playing in the u/18 championships so didn't get a look at him. Michael Wood and Dayle Garlett were the two youngsters in the game whom scouts would have been watching. On Dayle 1st Qrt Very little of him in this quarter he was very lethargic and looked flat footed at times 10 mins: Swans attacking and honour a lead at RFP which spills over the top to sweeping defender, Garlett comes in quick with defensive effort to force defender and ball over the line and ball up. What was of note here was Garlett's awareness not to draw his opponent to the contest and leave it 1 on 1 17 mins: Swans force a turnover on their half back line and break down the left wing, Garlett strolls through the corridor when their is clear space between CHF & FF. Swans player forced to kick long with no options and at the spill of the contest Subiaco clear easily 19mins: Again Swans cause a turnover and rebound to the left of the corridor, Garlett floating between centre and CHF identifies space at FF and makes a great angled run leaving opponent trailing now unable to see Garlett and ball coming in, pass is not AFL quality and it looks like Garlett made the wrong lead but IMO AFL player would have been able to hit the ball to correct area and left Garlett to run into an open goal 21mins: Garlett makes a good lead to RFP after a few half leads to lose and gain advantage on opponent, poor disposal sees ball go over Garlett's head but does not drop far behind him, he switches off thinking ball is headed out and provides no second effort, allowing Subiaco to clear the ball easily Quarter ends with Swans holding a 2 to 3 goal lead in a very lacklustre quarter for both sides 2ndQrt 1min: Swans win first bounce out of the centre and ball is bombed long from just outside forward 50 to around 2m from goal, Garlett seeing danger follows ball but does not get caught ball watching his direct opponent losses contact and attacks contest while Garlett sits ready at top of square and picks up the spill and immediately snap goal 7mins: Swans rebound quickly from HB and Garlett collects ball between near the edge of the Square & CHF he has the option of blazing away for goal but is cool and hits a perfectly weighted pass forcing FF to lead to pocket and take an uncontested mark. FF misses for a point. excellent disposal by Garlett with a pass not unlike something you would see from Davey 9mins: Ball is cleared hurriedly from Centre square and comes to HFF where Garlett gives a contest and provides good second effort to apply a tackle to crumbing defender, unfortunately for Garlett defender ducks his head and is awarded a free kick 10mins: Swans attack again and the ball spends some time in their forward 30 where Garlett stands flat footed and provides nothing, Subiaco clear with Garlett's direct opponent providing outlet with run to HBF passes through corridor and Bristow hist up Michael Wood with a strong lead. Subiaco goal 17mins: Garlett uses pace to make a lead to LHFF and after taking mark turns immediately to hit perfectly weighted pass over floating defender and hitting leading forward in Forward pocket. Results in point but another display of the foot skills of Garlett 29 mins: Gets caught ball watching and flat footed when a ball is cleared from a contest on Centre wing to space between CHF & FF makes a late effort at a marking contest but provides no second effort and ball is cleared easily by Garlett's direct opponent Garlett showed some AFL standard disposal in this quarter and has an awareness around goal which is natural, glaring lapses at times when he does not make second efforts or provide options 3rd Qrt: 3 mins: Swans clear ball from the centre square and kick is headed towards Garlett who is caught flat footed and does not provide contest and ball is cleared easily by Subi 7mins: Makes several efforts at leading before losing opponent and leading to LHFF and quickly for 3rd time during day plays on chipping to space forcing Tony Notte to run hard and take a good leading mark, from which he goals 22mins: Shows awareness by starting a lead and balking when he realises he is drawing a bigger opponent to a marking contest doubles back before making another lead to space accepting a pass from team mate who marked at original contest, turns and pinpoints a pass between CHF & FF which is marked by Geappan who goals (game over at this stage) 23mins: Swans cause turnover after Subi win clearance and bomb long to contest, Swans head down Western wing and kick long to RHF, where several players become involved in a marking contest, ball spills towards space about 35metres from goal, Garlett uses pace to lose opponent and scoops the ball up while at top pace with defender in pursuit, turns side on and snaps a goal 26mins: Garlett provides contest at HFF, which he was never going to win but does enough to bring the ball to ground forcing a ball up Again during 3rd quarter Garlett shows his good and bad side, caught flat footed or not willing to run hard enough to get to a contest or provide option to team mate. But his skills again can not be questioned and his passing skills are first class. 4th Qrt 6 mins: Gets to a contest at CHF when a Subi defender is preparing to clear, lays a tackle against a much bigger opponent but does not have the strength to cause a spill or bring opponent to ground. Ball is cleared through a string of handpasses 7mins: Previous clearance is turned over at Swans HBF and Subi are caught on the rebound Garlett remains deep and scores from a long pass to Forward pocket, which is handballed over the top to Garlett in goal square who kicks his 3rd 8 mins: Garlett gathers ball between Centre wing and LHFF and kicks without penetration and causes a turnover The game is over as a contest and Subi start to score some goals to make the margin a bit more respectable 14mins: Michael Wood is left in a 1 on 1 contest at FF with a much larger opponent and uses his body really well to take a mark and kicks a goal 26 mins: Garlett makes tow fantastic back to back efforts to put pressure on opponents as Subi attempt to clear the ball from defence, whilst Garlett does not cause turnover his efforts see hurried kicks in the passage of play which forces ball wide and eventually OOB on Centre wing, first real time I have seen Garlett gut run and absolutely out of breath sucking in some big gulps of air Swans win by 47 points thanks to dominance of their midfield and great game from Tony Notte (Ex WCE). In summing up Garlett had little of the ball and was not as good as the last time I seen him, but that was more of a solo effort, he had greater help from team mates today and Swans were therefore less reliant on him. There is no doubting his ability or the fact he has excellent skills and physically he has applied himself better, it is very obvious by how lean he is. I think his pace has improved since last year which is allowing him to close in on opponents quicker than he did last year. Positives so far: Garlett is fitter and faster Foot skills are exquisite and he makes teammates go to the ball he knows where to hit a pass and hit a forward without giving the defender a chance Tackling has improved, he is not like young flash but can put some heat on defenders 2nd efforts while not often are appearing I have seen him twice this year and has been very disciplined no sulking when things aren't going his way which was evident last year, appears to be listening intently when coming off and speaking with coaches Negatives: Doesn't get involved enough, I hope I'm there the day he is switched on for 4 quarters Needs to get stronger to see his tackles cause turnovers at AFL level To make an impact at AFL level and not get hurt going the other way needs to improve his stamina All in all very confident so far he will get drafted, has put a lot of effort in and worth a punt so far, still not sold on him going first round but well worth early second round pick. Michael Wood - Subi were awful and he played at FF so didn't see much of him, leads continually and is never flat footed I will wait to see more of him before assessing but could be worth a rookie spot. Not a big KPT but with some more body size may be a handy 3rd tall. Without trying to show my West Perth bias I think he is behind Rodda who can also play across HB
  12. I love Jimmy and everything he did for the club and us as supporters, when Jimmy got sick it prevented him from finishing what he started. The big fella was a unique individual and I have no doubt he would have succeeded as he would have done whatever it took. I accept he is not exempt from criticism but board ceased to be his once he became ill and had his mind focussed on getting well, embarrassingly for the club we used Jimmy as a public face and figurehead, culminating in him appearing at the press conference to announce Bailey's sacking. Maybe it was his aura but the board should have stepped in and said Jimmy go away get yourself better & leave the running of the club to us, by all means attend games come to the club whenever you wish but we really need you to concentrate your energies on your health. Jimmy became a white elephant and IMO those in positions of power at the club failed to show leadership in making that call. The 186 decision was made in panic and the outcome in the end was wrong, CS should have went and whilst Bailey should also have been shown the door, I think the end of 2011 may have been more appropriate and the correct selection process for a successor should have been put in place. So IMO Jimmy was in no fit state to be involved in these decisions in anyway and the board at the time needed to make the tough call. As far as I am concerned without Jimmy and his efforts along with others during debt demolition we would have either merged or been moved, I thank him for that and to me that is his legacy to the club. There are others I hold responsible for the aftermath of 186 and where it sees us today. It is time for the club to stop making panic decisions and not react to media driven causes. On the face of it PJ appears to be doing this now, may it last and may we do our due diligence in selecting a new president & board, who must then leave no stone unturned to get the best coach (contracted or uncontracted make it happen) and have a succession plan in place to bring this club forward Red & Blue forever
  13. Peter Bell says hello & yes take that as fact!
  14. I had best intentions of heading to Subiaco tomorrow to see WA vs Vic Metro, but have had to give it a miss due to other plans. Heading to Subiaco vs Swan Districts in the afternoon, will be watching Michael Wood & Dayle Garlett closely
  15. Sometimes it's better to just keep some of your thoughts to yourself. I'm pretty sure Jimmy didn't intend to get sick and leave himself unable to finish what he started. There is a lot more I could say in response to your posts on this thread, but I think I should take my own advice from my first sentence!
  16. They recruit well and develop well, but IAH Scarlett & Ablett went FS before the changes and both would have been first rounders, I agree if you recruit well you can be set up for 10 years, Geelong basically set themselves up with the 1999 & 2001 drafts
  17. Thanks Don, you took the job on to help out a friend and your loyalty to friend and club must be commended. No one can doubt your passion for the club and your efforts in a difficult time for Melbourne. I hope you enjoy watching the Dees in future without the pressures you have endured for the last few years!
  18. Does this apply to Jack Watts, just curious, have you seen something in him in the last 2 weeks which makes you think there is some hope. I take note where you say on your player appraisal you may keep Watts once he is told/understands the non-negotiables. I think he has just ticked over the 60 odd game mark and I think it is safe to say he was gifted 5 to 10 in his early years when 18 months solid in the VFL would have been of greater benefit
  19. Agree totally with this, whilst I'm all for embracing our traditions we need to think outside the square and home games against Meth Coast, Freo, Port, Brissy, GWS and Suns will never attract over 50k even if both teams playing are flying. Time to think outside "This is the way we have always done things and this is our home", IMO it is a risk worth taking and I maintain games against Swans and all Vic based clubs be played at the G. The only need for us to play away from the G would be at Etihad where we are the away side or play at Casey if both ourselves and either of the Dogs, Roos or Saints were struggling. With that scenario we get the majority of the crowd and make a handy profit
  20. Wasn't having a shot as I know you were just passing on what you heard, just saying despite what you heard think about the scenario and tell your source in all honesty just look at the facts. Just on the highlights I accept Rivers wanted to stay and for Beamer the relationship between him and Neeld meant he had no choice Frawley is in a different scenario he has the luxury of waiting and seeing who the club brings in next year, so whilst I can't gaurantee he will be with us next year (everyone has a price at trade time) IMO he will wait and see sho comes in before making a decision either way if he is happy with the new coach, he will sign an extension as will Sylvia IMO. If they are not then they will walk. We have to get this decison right with the Footy dept - Coach, Manager and the Board, if we do Sylvia, Gawn & Watts will resign and Frawley & Hogan will extend their contracts Lets hope the club and PJ in particular nail this and we can finally move forward
  21. It's not a rumour, it's complete [censored], just think about it logically. He is contracted to us next season Scott Watters is in no way assured of being St Kilda coach in 2015 We do not know who will be Dees Coach next season St Kilda are on a decline & if Frawley was to leave it would be to play finals as money wont be an issue between us & the Saints If it was you wouldn't you see where things were at with your current club in 2014 FFS are we going to have to put up with 12 months of this
  22. Meth Coast in the last 20 years have never deviated from their method of taking the best player available, despite team needs. They have a philosophy of picking up KPP'S with later picks, rookie etc unless they happen to be the best available then they will take them should the option arise in the draft
  23. Thanks for clearing that up
  24. Jeff White 1997, Pick 1 in 1994 ro 1995 draft 1 to Freo!
  25. He wont coach will take some time out, I know he is going through some personal issues and have been advised those personal issues are currently going through a marriage break up which is causing him some stress, which is starting to take it's toll! He will either be at Meth Coast or the media
