I think they just copied and pasted exactly what Max sent in without anyone checking it.
  2. The AFL would give him life membership for conceding such outrageous scores.
  3. 1970s fans, explain the Dennis Jones coaching regime to me. I've just started doing a research deep dive into 1978 and there's an almost Mark Neeld level of insanity going on. - He was appointed after three years out of senior coaching and had been sitting on the committee that presumably appointed him. Previous coaching experience with Prahran 15 years earlier (one losing second division grand final + one prelim), Central Districts seven years earlier (finals in the last of his four years) and West Perth in 1973/1974 (grand final in his first year, didn't make the finals in his second and left). I know he had more experience than a lot of people who got senior roles in that era but seems a bit jobs for the boys. - Ian Thorogood was one of his assistants after two years taking Carlton to 1st and 6th on the ladder. Seems like he'd have been a better option. Did he not want to take on another senior job? - Bob Skilton was reported to be one of the lowest paid coaches in the league, then Jones was said to be one of the highest. My reading of the situation is that he became one of the few full time coaches in the league because he had to give up a good job to take the role. A precursor for the next few years where we'd try and buy everyone in sight. - Immediately banned players from wearing thongs, t-shirts or tracksuits. - Fell out with Laurie Fowler twice (which to be fair to Jones was apparently not hard to do), causing him to quit the club both times before quickly coming back. - Presided over the most insane scoring I've ever seen, including: Conceding 100+ points in 20 of 22 weeks, 150+ five times and +140 another three times Losing 68-147 (!) in Round 1, winning 167-57 (!!) in Round 2, then five weeks later losing 141-204 (!!!!!!!) Losing 12 in a row in the middle of the year, including kicking 2.14.26 against Carlton and publicly describing it as the worst game he'd ever seen - Spent much of his time complaining about umpiring - Responded to nearly throwing away a big lead against Geelong with the playful statement "if we’d lost the game I would have cut their throats" - After losing to South Melbourne, Swans coach Des Tuddenham said we'd "run out of legs" and Jones said his side had "run out of ability" - Made the players sing the song in the visitors' dressing rooms of the Western Oval after their eighth 10+ goal loss of the season - When he said there was money for recruiting (though they didn't buy anyone worthwhile before the season) his philosophy was “if you get enough stones you’ll eventually smash a window”, which doesn't sound like the sort of person you'd put in charge of a budget - Celebrated a late season win by stomping on pamphlets handed out by a reform group that wanted to sack him. You can tell by the team list that they were trying to find new players, and he did try and lower expectations by all but saying (in contemporary language) that they needed to rebuild, but the new administration got in at the end of the year and he basically quit before he was sacked anyway. How was this appointment seen at the time, and what was the tipping point that led to fans turning on him? This is an era I'd like to learn more about, there's a lot of focus on the Barassi years but the 70s seem to be ignored. I'm sure those of you who lived through it will say that it's forgotten for a good reason.
  4. Featuring classic fence sponsor Cracker Barrel.
  5. Unfortunately I believe it's all or nothing on the NT. I'd certainly chip in $20 but then you run the risk of not making back the money, them ditching the sponsorship on us when the club starts raising money against it and being skint anyway. God I hate being a poor club.
  6. NT is crap no matter how hard the club tries to spin it but 50,000 x $5 will leave you about $1,000,000 short of what these games bring in. Factor in losing the permanent Queen's Birthday home game and dumping our pokies and there's a massive revenue gap to fill. Given that we made a slender profit last year one year of winning obviously wasn't going to be the answer.
  7. Great moment when Jakovich randomly turned up to open the show in the late 90s. As a teenage Jakovich fanatic I was moved to jump over the back of my couch in celebration. Then off he went for another 20 years...
  8. I couldn't care less about the politics one way or the other, but the idea that anyone would give a fat rat's clacker if we wheeled Burnside out as a fan is comical.
  9. Do we get one pick (Nietschke) or two (Walker) in this mid-season draft? Seems NQR that you'd be allowed to pick a ready made player to replace a Category B rookie but with the AFL who knows. Wonder if there's any electric forwards in the mix? Helps take a chance on somebody unusual when you can chuck them 12 weeks later.
  10. This is what I want to know. I don't want him in the side, but need to know who we'd fill his spot with or what we'd do with a non like-for-like player. Very willing to discuss alternatives. The idea of on-field leadership is great (if it's actually happening), but we're hardly original recipe GWS having to field Power, Cornes, Brogan and Junior to help the kids.
  11. Smart bloke, would have won a flag. Like when Green could have gone to the Pies, stayed and spent the next three years as a scapegoat.

Good to know Caro got one last story out of the people who spent all of 2011-2013 leaking to her.
  13. Didn't the Crows also get some mentalists to kidnap their players?
  14. Welcome home!
  15. Supermercado replied to dazzledavey36's post in a topic in Melbourne Demons
Should at least get a game when we only have 22 fit players left by Round 10
  16. Supermercado replied to dazzledavey36's post in a topic in Melbourne Demons
I wanted him to get a game mid-season last year before he was injured but the #1 rule in life is never get seduced by the highlights tape.
  17. Should have threatened them with a brutal camp again
  18. The rest of the side is suffering intermittent fisting
  19. The season is rooted anyway, there is nothing to be gained from making the club look like a 2012/13 style circus.
  20. He can guide them in giving away petulant free kicks behind play.
  21. Four weeks of being told how much we needed Lewis' leadership, then he unnecessarily decks a bloke inside 50 and concedes a free. The season is dead, give him a token assistant coach position until the end of the year and work on the future.
  22. In any other circumstances I'd denounce the name Tigga, but in this case I really want them to play a game just for the novelty value.
  23. Supermercado replied to Demon3564's post in a topic in Melbourne Demons
Probably because they were champions of the club, not a fly-in fly-out player who gave the bare minimum service. I'd have him back if we needed a toilet cleaned.
  24. As discussed in tonight's podcast, on demonwiki.org we've been compiling a list of all the MFC connected players who served in wars as well as the better known list of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This stretches from the Boer War to the Korean War, and is very much a work in progress so if anyone can shed more light on the service of the players listed below please get in contact via the forum or [email protected]. Fortunately the format copies perfectly from the page (http://demonwiki.org/Players+who+served+during+war) to this forum, so here's the list. The * denotes a non-senior player (e.g. from a lower grade or trained with us without playing a game). A particularly interesting story is the Couve brothers, who both trialled in the 1912 pre-season but didn't play a game and were struck down just 15 days apart during the Gallipoli landings. And watch bad teams get stomped in spectacular fashion like they used to in the VFA. Imagine if you took our 2012/13 teams and added even more open space on the ground - we'd have topped 186 and 190. The benefits when good teams play each other might be worth it, but there will be less than zero benefit for the people that watch their team lose by 25 goals each week. As for full ground 6-6-6 that is just dead-set insanity and anyone who thinks it's a good idea should have to undergo a urine test before posting.
