Real time. Too long.
-
I agree with this. Viney got slammed for the how long his arm was on Collins' throat.
-
I’ll reserve judgment as I think it’s unfair to judge a player subbed into a game. Very difficult for players to shine under those circumstances. I don’t believe he’s currently best 22, but he’s certainly best 30 and arguably has more versatility than Jones. Melksham’s performance last night has made it very difficult for both of them. If Viney, Jordon and Sparrow are fit and available, they may both sit out September.

Shane Woewodin on SEN 8/8/21 at 10.00am
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
The list management was horrid in the 90s - 2000s. Daniher in this video states (4:20) that it was more or less a choice between keeping Woewodin and losing one or more of Yze, Johnstone, Powell, Robertson, Chris Lamb and Jr McDonald, or cutting a much loved, loyal and respected player. Sound like we were up to our neck in cap trouble. Woey is scathing in this and it seems like it's taken a long time for him to recover from it. https://www.afl.com.au/video/165520/the-day-the-dees-traded-a-brownlow-medallist?videoId=165520&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1476318392001 -

Possibly... I was referring to the Mac Andrew NGA rule changes for the draft. -

Hopefully it's too late for the AFL to change the Draft rules Father Sons... -
He had some of the biggest wraps you'll ever see on a player in the lead up to the mini-draft. It's unbelievable the hyperbole thayt gets written about kids at the time of year. The media (and internet pundits) feed off each others hypes and you end up with a Tom Boyd style report where he somehow became better and better through an U18 year where he barely played. He doesn't look completely engaged to me; perhaps disenchanted with moves to two clubs that promised the world and have delivered next to nothing (other than a huge stack of cash). He's reluctant to make contact, perhaps due to the fact that every time he tried that at GC, he got injured. Not a true midfielder, not a particularly great forward, he plays as a small utility and doesn't really excel anywhere. I'll admit, I was keen to get him to the Dees, fooled into thinking he was a good player in a poor team. The reality is he's just: 'meh'. People rate him very harshly, but I think that's the price you pay when you put your hand up for the huge contracts and make very public trade demands.

Pretty much from the moment Derwayne prattled on about how well Teague had done as coach since taking over… it’s been all Gold Coast!

No one hands over a second rounder for Weideman; especially not someone at the bottom end of the ladder. There’s potential there, but you don’t give a top 20-25 pick for a player stranded in the VFL. As his trade value is as low as it’s ever been, I’d keep him.
-
Wrestling will get you a fine at worst. Choking a player will get you sent straight to the tribunal. Hence, the stupidity.
-
Just dumb; inconceivably stupid. Nothing tough about laying into a guy who’s already lying on his back. Nothing to gain, plenty to lose. Shouldn’t even both getting on the plane.
-
Weid has the potential to be a good player. Perhaps the way the cards have fallen for him means that that won't be with us. Unfortunately, anyone thinking we will receive decent compensation in a trade will be sorely disappointed.

Rd 22 vs Adelaide in Melbourne

If only Eddie showed the same initiative... -
Was an outstanding Jr Footballer. Very limited Senior Footballer. Role player in an excellent team. Exposed in an average team. Talent-wise, was probably on par either ANB.

Luke ‘dogga’ Jackson rising star favourite
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to Dave1711's topic in Melbourne Demons
This is a classic example of the confusing nature of the Rising Star Award. It's always difficult to get a clear answer on the criteria for how it's awarded or the degree to which the judges look at: a) the performances they've had over the course of the year. b) the potential that player exhibits, based on their performances that year. There has always been an ambiguity in the Rising Star award which has seen players like Lewis Taylor, who had a fine 2014, beating Marcus Bontempelli, who showed clear signs of the player he was going to be in the second half of that year. River and Jordon have both had greater and more consistent output that Jackson this year but, from what we have seen, most would agree Jackson has the greater potential to be a 'star' in the future. This keeps the award wide open and probably suggests it's between Jackson, Cox and Green. -
Luke ‘dogga’ Jackson rising star favourite

Strange year in The Rising Star award. No real, absolute standout young players, but a huge number of very good youngsters with massive potential. Jackson is nowhere near the dominant force that Hogan was in 2015, but you can see the immense player that he could develop into. -
As a big guy with a good kick (could kick it 20m), I was always put at full-back as a kid. I hated it - until I saw Sean Wight play it in '94. Loved watching him in full flight; hard, athletic, desperate and could fist a ball further than many could kick. Huge loss.

I think in every match that we've played (and won) against another top team, we've gone in as underdogs. That is absolutely fine by me. No one took the Bulldogs seriously in 2016, or Richmond in 17 and a Tigers premiership in 2018 was an all-but certainly leading into September. Everything I've seen rates us as a very, very good team; no need for anymore mustard than that at this stage.

Best highlight of last night's game!
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to Bendigo_Demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
They embarrassed themselves last night and, even worse, their incessant booing and appealing for frees clearly influenced their team. Even the players were waving their hands around for ridiculous, non-existent free kicks in the last quarter, instead of focusing on the next contest. -
I think it might come down to his GPS numbers as much as the numbers of goals. If he's fit and moving well, I'd think he comes in for a look.
-
Thanks for the report! Was it Mitch or Ben brown that slotted a couple?
-
Ironically, Collingwood were very well coached today. Clogged us up and cut out our run, spread better and prevented the switch, lowered their eyes and cut through our defense, maintained possession and cut out the contested ball. Unlike the Adelaide match, where I think both teams played well, we were putrid today. Collingwood played well, they stuck to their plan and their skills pressure were excellent. We could have risen to match them, but we were too poor to do so. Need a bye and a return to Victoria.

University research on fans' views of racism in the AFL

Pretty clear what the real research here is. Post a link to a survey with some simple, open questions relating to experiences of racism in Australian sport. THEN observe and quantify people losing their collective [censored] in the comments. -
Nathan Buckley Steps Down as Collingwood Coach
TeamPlayedFine39 replied to roy11's topic in Melbourne Demons
Other than Neale Daniher in 07, I can't recall another time a coach announced they were leaving mid-year, then had another game. The notion that teams play better immediately after a coach is fired has been around for a long time, but not sure if there's any definitive proof to back it up.
