Best Player

Chook

In light of Jeff White being named Melbourne's only representative in the Victoria/All-Stars game, and to counteract all the negativity going around in these forums, I'd like to ask who on our list:

A. Has been Melbourne's best player.

B. Is currently our best.

C. Has the potential to be our best.

David Neitz, Jared Rivers and Cale Morton, for mine. Thoughts?

Yes - no argument here - although Morton needs to work on his body in a big big way to reach his obvious potential.

Although, looking at Mitch Morton at Richmond, Morton (and the club) should be aiming for a KP.

Hopefully, CHF.

That's putting a lot on the kid but it is exciting.

And despite the doomsayers there are some things at the Demons to be excited about.

Cue the bitter oneliners...

A. Jim Stynes (sorry Barrass)

B. Nathan Jones ( I am willing to wear the punches for this one. I rate him because he gives so much when he is on the ground)

C. Easy, Cale Morton has showed more than any of the past 3 years draft picks. And he is only a rake with 4 games under is his belt, give him 10 KGS and 50 games and he should be something special.

Nice to get some positive vibes back in the place!

A: David Neitz

B: Jones (for his work rate no one really outstanding so far)

C: half the team if they played to their full potential

Neitz from White and Yze

Rivers from McLean and Davey

Morton from Jones and Dunn

And Garry Lyon is the best i've watched with Stynes and Neitz just behind

Of the current list:

A: Toss up between Neitz and White. I'll give it to white by a whisker.

B: This won't be popular and I've definitely changed my mind but McLean has been our hardest working and best player so far. Definitely underrated by alot of poeple with what he's done, myself included.

C: Morton, easily

1. Neitz - An absolute champion!

2. Bruce

3. Sylvia - I rate this bloke (even though many don't!) and reckon he has the biggest upside of any player on our list. Morton - too early to say, though he does look good!

A. G.Lyon/ D.Neitz can't split em love em both.

B. Currently on form Wheatley. Best player on list J. Rivers.

C. Morton . Also think L.Dunn has massive potential. Would like to see both get loads of game time this season.

Biggest excitement machine: J.Farmer / A.Jakovich + Shaun Smith had some unbelievable trouser-tent raising moments

Good thread Chook. I think you got the trifecta.

Going back, the best I've seen would be Flower, followed by Schwartz pre-knee. Then you're looking at Alves, Wells, Lyon & Jakovich.

First of all, congrats to White (though I think the set-up of this Vic Vs. All Stars comp will be crushing to the Vic team).

Greatest player I've seen in red and blue - Tie between Stynes and Jackovich

Best on the list - Rivers for me, easily.

Potential - Morton definitley looks the goods, like the work of Wonna though. I thought about saying McLean, his potential is always on display, now I wanna see his potential for handling a tag.

I hope I’m not interpreting incorrectly but i think the three categories Chook was suggesting were all to be made up of players on our current list

1. Of all the players on our list who HAS been the best player

2. Who is our best player (would suggest this would go beyond purely 2008 form

3. Well it seems people have got this one right

Perhaps to avoid confusion we should add a fourth

4. Best player you've seen at the MFC.

Sorry to nit pick its just I liked the topic and would love to people’s response to Chooks categories.

You're absolutely right about what my intentions were, and it seems that a fourth topic would be good. Anyway, a lot of people have put in their two cents about our past players as well, so I guess I will too. Because I'm only 18, I haven't seen anywhere near as much footy as a lot of guys on this board, but I always liked Jim Stynes and Adem Yze when I was growing up. Plus, I always had a pretty good chance of seeing them play week in, week out.

1 Neitz - 300 games is testament to anyone. Hope he hasnt overstayed!!!

2 Rivers - Knits the backline together with Whelan and Carroll. God knows the ball's down there enough.

3 Jones - Now Trav's gone, this bloke has the potential to be a superstar

4 Schwarz - Was watching some stuff on TheoX the other day. He was better than Royce Hart at CHF. But you cant go past Robert Flower

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
