2008 Bailey changes

Freak

Recommended Posts

Bailey hinted in his SEN interview that he will experiment with some positional changes of several players. What do you guys think that they could be?

With a fully fit 22 in 2008, I'd like to see something like this..assuming there are no trades(which I'm sure there will be)

FB: Frawley Carroll Bell

HB: Petterd Rivers Green

C: Dunn Mclean Bartram

HF: Davey Bate Newton

FF: Bruce Neitz Robertson

Ruck: White, Jones , McDonald

Interchange: Sylvia, Johnstone, Jamar, R.Palmer :D

Bruce to play permanent forward and Bate to play CHF(only 1cm shorter than Riewoldt). These would be my only major changes. newton also seems good up in the midfield.

you have pretty much named our best 22 as it stands right now. you have not suggested anything different...i dont get it is this a thread about our team for round 1 2008..?

if i was going to make some positional changes i would consider:

1) put Sylvia and Bate into the midfield group over pre-season training and give them the fitness to become permanant midfielders and not half-forward flankers.

2) Trying to turn Dunn into a CHB

3) Giving Bell a go in the midfield could work

4) i know its not positional change, but Frawley to be locked in the gym over the summer and developed into a big-bodied key defender

FF: Bruce Neitz Whelan

Ruck: Jamar, Mcdonald , Newton

Interchange: Sylvia, Johnstone, Green, R.Palmer

Now unleash the beast on me.

why on earth would you place one of the clubs worst kicks for goal as a permanent forwrd.. i.e Bruce. Bruces place is on the ball..or on another player.

so you would put riewoldt in the backline then because he is a shocking kick for goal? i think not. I think Bruce would get a lot better when permanently placed in the forward line..remember..as soon as he was placed in the midfield..his career plateaued. He started his career off as a stunning forward.

nice try..Riewoldt..etc.. Riewoldt can actually kick.. he has the yips now and then.. Bruces kicking abilities has been in steadi decline . It is not a good analogy, but nice defelction. Nick is a foward who can play up.. Bruce is never a forward, he's an on baller..

As much as we all love Newton, Petterd, Frawley. They won't be in there come round 1.

With players like Rivers, Yze, Moloney fit, Neitz back in, Bartram, a new drafted player, a trade, a pre-season draft.

Frawley, Petterd and Newton will continue to develop in Sandy.

Rivers, Yze and Neitz are better. I don't think we will completely re-build with kids.

Newton, Petterd and Frawley are not competing for the positions that Rivers and Neitz will take and Yze and Moloney will aspire too

Yze isn't better and should prepare for a permanent Sandy number on his back. There is good reason to doubt that Moloney will be back in 2008. Bartram will challenge for a midfield role and will remove the need for Godfrey. Petterd, Newton and Frawley should press claims for the first game of 2008.

He started his career off as a stunning forward.

He did!!

Where did he do that?

I can't believe how much people reject Yze.

I don't think there is THAT much wrong with his game.

He loves the red and blue and is a guarantee when fit finally after playing that many games his body was going to be struggling. Surgery, a full pre-season, Yze will be almost as good as ever, and for the lowest scoring team in the comp, Davey seeming to be headed up the midfield, we could use Yze to be the magical crumbing forward he has been for many years.

He waas good up to 2002 and richly deserved his AA selection. But he changed from then on

Since 2002, Yze has cheated some of the basic requirements of football and cut corners by his significant talents.

Yze is a downhill skier whose greatest shows are fewer and further between and typically against ordinary opposition or teams that dont man him up. Avoids the contested ball, wont chase or tackle, lazy, is not accountable for his opponent and directs other player to pick up his opposite running off Yze and argues with umpire.

If Bailey is serious about culture and eradicating mediocrity then Yze is in trouble.

If Yze is anything like he has been over the past two to three years, I'll pass thanks

Davey cant win a contest ball up the ground and does not like a close tag. Apart from cameos, I cant see Davey up the ground much.

I think Davey will become a stronger force in midfield.

Bailey was the midfield coach at Port. Which means he must have something to do with making a player like Pearce a midfielder. Pearce looked like a good goal scoring option in his first year, up on the F/Flank, but has become a seriously good midfielder this year. I was thinking maybe Bailey will try and do the same with Aaron.

Correct.

Yze could afford to play like this when the team was going well. However when the chips are down he gets found out. A bit like Robbo.

My feeling is that we'll see one or two of Robertson, TJ, Bruce or Yze going somewhere else.

I have my real doubts about the long-term viability of Moloney and Whelan in regard to injuries.

I think the changes in 'position' that might be looked at are not drastic ... more like developing the "tall running mid-fielder come KPP" option in players like Dunn and Bate, and perhaps Bell as a midfielder (although I like his ability against non-tall hard leading forwards and the rebound he gets out of the backline).

Let's face it, the game these days is more about 3-4 forwards, 3-4 backs and 14-16 mid-fielders anyway. We've basically got McLean, Jones, Bruce, Green, McDonald, Godfrey and Moloney as experienced midfielders. Building the motors of the young players like Buckley, Bartram, Bate, Davey, Dunn, Chris Johnson, Newton, Petterd, Sylvia and Bode (as well as new draftees) into multi-purpose run-with roles as required might be an overall goal.

Gouga,

That's the nub of the problem....how often has the team gone well enough to afford the luxury of Yze's attitude and application of his known talents? As you rightly point out about Robbo, our team would have to be having a Cats 2007 season to do so.

However, a successful side depends on each player's commitment to team rules. I am not sure MFC get there with one and possibly two players whose commitment is readily drawn into question at regular intervals.

I love it.

I would put Whelan in and release Bartram as a tagger.

White is shot as a ruckman but he's got talent and still has plenty to offer.

We should've tried him CHB or tall midfielder in the past 8 weeks but Riley had faith.

White is useless on body on body contact and poor below the knees so I cant see him being able to by CHB or a midfielder.

He is indeed a midfielder by default as a ruckman and despite best efforts is limited.

Whelan is diminishing in skills and I hope Bode may develop and fill that role

Ok...

White will not play CHB. Never ever ever!

Whelan will NOT play in the forward line.

Yze will be fit - He will play from round 1. As will Maloney.

Newton will play HFF or will play for Sandi for half the year. Petterd & Frawley will also play most games of the year for Sandi.

Davey will play in the midfield under Bailey. He will bulk up over the pre-season. Watch.

Trades? Either Robertson or Johnstone will no doubt go - Along with a few more. Bailey won't keep both of them.

Picks? Strong Marking 'Big Man' up forward & down back. There will also be some harder bodied midfielders to throw some weight around.

2008 - It's our time to shine..!

Ps. If you don't agree - That's great that you have an opinion but keep it for yourself because these are just my predictions. We won't know until next year.

Go Dees.

I like the idea of dunn at CHB, could become a chad cornes type, and even if it doesnt work long term, i think he will learn a lot from it. i want davey going back deep to crumbing, and sent up ground for minutes at a time...

bruce can part of the midfield rotations yes, however if we have a fit list, with bartram, sylvia, and others also in the team, bruce can afford to spend a bit more time up forward. i like him forward, he marks and leads well. if he hits fantastic form he can go back in the guts, but that means another smaller mid has to come forward...

are we too heavy down back? i dont think so. we only have one tall on the bench, and this sort of defensive structure allows rivers to be released a little. while still having 3 talls. frawley also has a bit of pace so i think this back 6 would be effective.

again i think we are a little too tall in our forward line, but we dont have another short forward. sylvia will be rotated through the forward line, simply because we need another small up there and he can play forward quite well...

if the back six is settled, i would like to see wheelan tried up forward as another crumber, and perhaps bartram just for short bursts.

Regarding bate, in the long run, i think he is not going to be a genuine CHF, but a big utility with an engine. maybe like a lesser kouta. hopefully he can play stints at CHF, stints in the centre, and run off a flank.

I think newton is a genuine key forward. he may push up the wing to find some ball, but in the long run i really see him sitting in the goal sqaure replacing neitz...

Totally unbalanced team. Not enough run from the backline or defensive pressure from the forwards.

This is my team for 2008.

Obviously I hope for new recruits & trades but here we go;

B: Whelan Carroll Bell

HB: Green Rivers Bruce

C: McLean McDonald Dunn

HF: Sylvia Bate Davey

F: Robertson Neitz Yze

R: White Jones Bartram

Int: P Johnson, Newton, Wheatley, Petterd.

This team is more probable - Lynden Dunn will not play CHB (ever)!

Looking forward to the 'Bartram / Jones connection' in '08.

Both are 19 & show HUGE amounts of potential.

Well everyone seems to think he'll be delisted.

I hope not, I think he can still bring a lot to Melbourne.

I'd take Petterd out for Holland if he's not delisted.

But if he is, he will be the new Melbourne Mascot ;)

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
