worth noting that with 11 goals he is only 1 goal from being the equal 5th goal kicker at melbourne this year (sylvia has 12) even though he has only played 8 games.

he hasnt kicked heaps, no one else has, and he has played mostly as a forward, but he is performing reasonable for a first run in the seniors...

I remember some clown on here said he'll just be another 426, glad he's proving them wrong, I really think we have a player on our hands, generally a nice kick as well as awesome hands and an awesome leap.

another 3-5 kilos over the summer and a big preseason since he know knows what he needs to do, the man will fair better and hopefully kick 40+ goalds for us in a versatile forward line with the skip and robbo.

Perhaps 426 would have shown a bit if given a chance. Even when given a game, he still had less than 50% game-time.

Maybe he is not any good at AFL Jack. What's he done in the VFL this year with Box Hill? Newton has the skill set to make a go at AFL that Smith never had.

He continues to prove alot of people wrong, let's hope this trend continues

Who are they?

All the people who were burning MFC flags at his non selection:

A couple of years ago when I first got down here, I was a long way behind the eight ball – physically and mentally probably.

Physically (I was) lighter, and mentally I don't think my training was at the required intensity level.

The coaches told me I was a bit lazy, so I worked on my mental strength, on my skills and also on my body in the gym.

Vindicates the position of many around here IMO.

Yep.

Never doubted he'd get here... but that's alright Jarka, listen to what you want.

Many people were calling for Newton to debut weeks earlier, not years.

If a player has a history of not being mentally up to scratch then IMO it makes sense to leave it until the last possible minute to play him.

I was referring to some media personalities, for example after he took that great mark a couple of them made the comment that that will be all that he is remembered for.

Others too have said that he won't make it, but I don't keep a list.

Why do you ask?

WTF?!!!!

I've just read this post after responding to RR and read some of the others, and I'm not [mod edit] happy of what you're accusing me of here.

I'm cool with that.... considering the number of times you've accused me of telling porkies about Juice and the stages of his development.

Seems a silly thing to say. Who were these media personalities?

Was a very silly thing to say. It was said by Gerard Healy on the Fox commentary at the time.

No surprise

It was on the tv, can't remember which ones though.

Well, I didn't say that exactly but it's all cool

A point of correction. Healy stated that "if that's all he's remembered for .... "

He never said that that would be all he's remembered for. A subtle but very important difference.

Fwiw, I doubted him. Not his talent as I've seen him at training, I've seen him play for Sandy at TBO, and was there at Casey Fields when he impressed. But I was also at Telstra Dome before the season commenced for the intraclub that served to be a trial run for channel 7. Combined with his well known immaturity and the fact that it was his third year, I ran out of patience after that effort.

Aren't we all pleased now though. Perhaps not a time for point scoring.

You're probably right hannabal, and sometimes I think I get excited about him purely because we are so devoid of quality young key forwards - even McDonalds tastes good to a starving man.

And where the hell have you been?

Interesting that you're so happy to have been proven wrong, though I think years into the future we'll remember these first 3 years as a dicey time for a talented player, and there were MANY reasons why things could have gone wrong for him... your call wasn't uneducated, and in all honesty in the long run if you had 20 guys that came through in a similar fashion to Juice, maybe 5 would make it if you're lucky. Gievn his infancy at MFC, we're fortunate to have seen him carve out a spot as he has at all...

For my part, I went to the entire pre-season and early season matches for Sandy and was convinced of his talent from VERY early on, having missed his woeful intra-club match early this year. I saw him ONLY at his best...

That said, while I think it's proven that we have a player on our hands, I have a feeling peoples' expectations are going to be overblown. I think in the grand scheme of things he could be a handy Nathan Thompson type player in years to come, or maybe a Corey Jones... I'm not sure yet whether he'll become the next Neitz. That's not to say he CAN'T become a champion, just that there's SO much work yet to be done. I hope we don't go from sainting the guy in 2007, to laying into him for every little mis-kick (a la Cam Bruce) in 2010.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
