PREGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon

Featured Replies

Have a sneaky feeling Latrelle might bob up for a few this weekend.

Had his best game against the Suns and is growing in confidence every week.

think we should not only do it for Melksham. I'm of the opinion it should be for Checkers and Steele as well. Because we owe them a lot for what they seem to have started to build here.

A new standard of no quarter gven, uncompromising, hard and non stop FOOTBALL.

Completely agree - they have been immense additions, and their pride in what they do is not only evident on their part - it is willing others to do the same - hence the no quarter given football.

#22 at Collingwood v. Freo. Watch for the bump balls. Freo by 3 pts, please. David Rodan in goal again.

Yep, good mention on bump balls and slow "stand "calls as well.

Another one is wild prerogative on who gets to call out of bounds depending on who will benefit or not. Although they have started to pick that up now.

Another milestone for both Max and Tommy who will both overtake James McDonald who is sitting on 251 games on the MFC all time games tally.

Funnily enough, if they both line up against Brisbane at the MCG next week, they'll move past Brian Dixon on 252 games as well.

If they both play out the full remainder of the season (not including finals), they'll both end up on roughly 270 odd games and finish the year ranked at least fifth on that list.

The quality of journalism and subsequent questioning in press conferences has never been at a higher level.

“Steven, Melbourne hasn’t won a game at Gather Round. Will you look into that”

Unless my memory is failing me I believe we beat Adelaide in 2024.

No it wasn't. It looked OK on paper but watching it I can tell you they were putrid in stoppages, clearance and speed.

Having said that they will probably get some momentum rise from their performance and we should be wary but if Melbourne plays like it can they are no match.

They had ONE particularly good qtr... then couldn't keep it rolling. Pups had their measure.

I dont think Essendon can cover all aspects of our game but they can be THAT bloody nuisance of a side. Nothing to be taken for granted.

Agreed. I don't think Dons have the pace to keep up with him. Expecting him to dance around a few and hopefully set up and/or kick a few.

He'll be dead keen to play well in front of his old Glenelg crew.

He's a little 2 steps forward... have a rest etc etc.

But he's growing as you suggest. The syncronicity between the Picketts is what's really starting to click.

Their fast becoming everyone else's nightmare.... it's Scott's turn this week 😉

agree. Win this week, as expected we should. And the football media will have to take us seriously. 5 games likely 4 wins. Shades of 2020-2022. So enjoy the ride. It does not happen all the time.

Losing 5 last year was the end of goody. No way back from there.

This could be the direct opposite. The sky could be the limit .

Statement game to the competition.

I am hoping this season resembles 2018.

Young, up and coming team.

How beautiful it would be to have 90k at the G' and hear the roar!

Correct, it was when we beat both Adelaide and Port back to back.

Latrelle reminds me of Lewis Jetta in his first season with Sydney, showed some glimpses of his speed and attacking flair without really impacting the scoreboard, but you could see the potential

Man that was something. I was there for the cats and hawks games. Unreal.

Yeah it was something else.

Unfortunately under Goodwin we couldn't experience that in 22 or 23. 22' we barely had 70k. 23' got somewhere around 90k but clearly outnumbered by Collingwood and Carlton.

2018 we were huge, Geelong had no more than 20k supporters and against Hawthorn I'd say it was 55-45 split in our favour.

Yeah agree. Still perplexes me how 22' was so low (even taking into account interstate teams).

But I think there's a lot of excitement around the team right now. Lots of kids, big future, exciting game play. If we don't make finals this year, we'll have a big turnout the following year. We need this kind of excitement and continued success to build the fans of tomorrow - the ones who will be bringing their kids in 20 years. I think that's been the missing link for us. We were so ordinary for so long that we have a disjointed and disconnected fanbase. I thought 21' was the year we'd turn it around and aim for a purple patch to bring in those future fans. We have another chance now, especially while Maxy is still with us!

Another preseason on the back of a debut season should see him really lift ( imho )

Different situations though. 2018 was our first finals campaign in 12 years and our opponents were Geelong and Hawthorn. The excitement for us fans that year is probably incapable of being replicated, even this year.

2022 was the year after we’d won the flag, still some tentative COVID restriction hangovers, and interstate opponents.

Both really good points! Agree, definitely played a part.

All I know is that if we make finals this year, attendance will be at least 4 (me and my +3).

When will it dawn on the Bombers that they should have taken the 3 1st rd draft picks on offer for the 30 year old Merrett.

I’d say it already has. Stubborn egos at the top have chained that club to ordinariness and I for one am very happy with that. They could finish bottom this year. On past selections that won’t guarantee them a good player.

Shades of their stubbornness re Daniher.

And of course each year post 30 his trade value goes down.

On the flip side the reluctance of destination clubs to offer players is also a factor.

Maybe we were a bit complacent, thinking it was a given we would play another GF.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
