As long as the songs arenโ€™t played for close to their full term as Brisbane did on the weekend, when a post Cameron goal rendition was still playing just as the Bulldogs goaled at the other end๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Thatโ€™s the crowd continuing to sing after the song.

I'm agnostic on the issue. It doesn't move the needle for me, but we're also not going to come back from it. It's part and parcel of the gameday experience and theatrics.

I just don't really see how some people are so passionate about an audio excerpt that's < 30 seconds long.

It adds to the worsening experience of going to the footy. They already blare [censored] through the speakers way too loud during the breaks as it is and have these pathetic "fan activations", it detracts from the natural atmosphere of the game, and when we are playing in a barren MCG of around 20k people and have just kicked a goal to reduce the margin to 45 points with 10 minutes left it will just feel depressing.

But sure, progress and all that ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฃ

The social aspect of the game is diminishing and it feels more like an interactive video game machine you step into at Timezone when you walk through the gates. Can't even have a conversation at half time because something is blaring or they're doing one of those stupid 'are you paying attention' things.

Iโ€™d be happy if we could have a latter day Leonard Teale (Iโ€™m pretty sure that Leonardโ€™s dead โ€˜n gone) doing a spoken word version of the playersโ€™ favourite songs.

How about the Man from Trent Rivers?

There was very quick movement from the MFC, for the ball had been chipped passed around,

that the Kolt from old Waffle had got away.....

Is this a training thread?

Yes, but training for what?

All this talk around songs playing after a goal is kicked has missed the main benefit I see - when I go to take a leak at the 22min mark, to beat the rush, and someone kicks a goal while I'm gone - the song is almost like a score update before I get back to my seat.

Haha I did find it a slightly odd reply.

I did say that as well as a dad Iโ€™m a teacher. So for better or worse Iโ€™m surrounded by lots of different kids all the time, have got to know thousands over the journey, and therefore feel Iโ€™m reasonably well qualified to talk about them.

And then in my post I spoke about kids generally, without even mentioning my kids.

So not sure how my view is โ€œquite narrowโ€, but thatโ€™s the world we now live in where people are happy to confidently tell people who have spent their lives in a certain field that they donโ€™t actually have any idea what theyโ€™re talking about!

Yeah it was late and I was angry, so no wonder it sounds a little odd. And that was me holding back. I probs wouldโ€™ve broken the censor function in my first sentence alone. ๐Ÿ˜…

How would you feel if youโ€™re at a concert watching your favourite band and between songs audio excerpts of footy matches were played?

Bring me a sensical example and I'll get back to you. As I said, I'm agnostic on the issue, though I hardly think excerpts of music is beyond the decorum of an AFL match.

Speaking of songs after goals I sat at the GWS game and had a slight chuckle after every one of Jake Stringers 5 goals listening to this ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Man! I feel like a woman

Clearly Jake is a big Shania Twain fan

The music after goals and general blaring of music these days at the footy annoys me too but Iโ€™m closer to 50 than 30 and rapidly approaching grumpy old man statusโ€ฆ.im sure supporters like me are not the intended demographic for this kind of thing so canโ€™t do a lot about it

Decorum? LOL. This has nothing to do with decorum.

My example is perfectly valid. You know it is but arenโ€™t about to admit it.

Having to hear 30 seconds of music blasted regularly throughout a footy match is no different to having to hear 30 seconds of footy commentary blasted regularly throughout a concert.

The question remainsโ€ฆ how would you feel about it?

The club is getting with the times and trying to attract and keep young supporters??? Nah, the club is doing what the players have asked, playing goal celebration songs. I canโ€™t imagine anyone, let alone the club, expecting this gesture to boost membership numbers.

Your last sentence is not only disrespectful, itโ€™s a sweeping generalisation. You think only young people enjoy music and old people donโ€™t? Regardless of oneโ€™s age, not liking a song played after a goal doesnโ€™t mean not liking music altogether. We have teenagers in the DA who donโ€™t want the goal celebration songs; by your definition theyโ€™re dinosaurs. Nonsensical in the least.

I like that post especially coming from a lover of high brow knee slappers

I absolutely hate all this stuff. The AFL has no faith in its own product, so it tries to jazz it up and just makes it obnoxious.

When someone kicks a goal, that's the time to talk to the person you are with about how good it was. At halftime and quarter time intervals, that's when you talk to the person next to you about how the game is going, what needs to be improved, etc. But no, we have to listen to absolute rubbish being played over the loudspeakers at deafening levels, which makes conversation impossible.

Agree 100%.

Again, I would love the AFL or the MFC to point us to research or empirical data which shows us that the majority of fans enjoy this sort of stuff.

I'm quite confident it doesn't exist.

Instead, there is a pervasive thought that to attract new fans to the sport, this is what is required.

Put aside whether it works, it completely disregards the rest of us. As usual, rusted-on fans are taken for granted while the AFL panders to those who don't care.

Given you're am apparent proof-reader, semanticist and grammarphile, I would think you'd know why decorum is incredibly apt in this instance.

You're example isn't perfectly valid at all. It's nonsensical, lacks meaning and is just facetious. If you think there's no difference between thirty seconds of footy commentary playing at a concert, and a composed musical excerpt (regardless of whether it is to your taste, or not) then there's no point in actually having a discussion on the merits of it.

I know you enjoy being deliberately obtuse (or is that flattering?), so you should expect to not have your comments humoured, my little sheet rack.

Or a proof

I am a regular music concert attendee and I have never one ever heard or seen a football match played being played in between songs.

Bizarre comparison.

Youโ€™ve not answered my question, though. Iโ€™ll reword it in case you donโ€™t understand itโ€ฆ Would you be ok with footy commentary being blasted regularly throughout a concert? Even โ€˜Yesโ€™ or โ€˜Noโ€™ will suffice.

Pet hate: folks who dismiss a hypothetical question without sharing their reasons why and instead throw adjectives around with no substance; nonsensical, facetious, etc., to wit: WHY is my example not valid?

Oh and now I see you have the class bully on your side, therefore Iโ€™m gonna back out of this conversation. Hashtag 100 times bitten, 200 times shy.

Not surprised you haven't. That's because concert organisers have more taste and respect for why the audience is there than the AFL does.

I actually disagree on the AFL not having faith in its own product.

If you attend any NFL / NBA game, there is constant noise playing throughout stoppages in the game, and in some cases, during the game. Both of those leagues are among the most profitable sporting leagues in the world, so much so that the AFL is at least a couple of zeros away in terms of valuation. This is the way that modern sport is moving

I would argue that the 30-second song clip doesn't affect the experience of attending the game anyway. There is always music being played during the quarter-time breaks, and that is arguably when the most conversation is had. The music will just blend into the background after a couple of games, unless the supporters really get around a couple of players' songs.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
